Comics The Return Of Eddie Brock

I'm really looking forward to Eddie's return. Eddie is one of my most favorite characters, and having him back as Venom again is great news for me.

Like it's been said though, the character just suffers from numerous continuity problems that need to be rectified.

I think that my most favorite writing of the character would have to be in the Venom Mini-series :The Hunger" (Not the SSM arc). It really personifies Eddie, the symbiote, and their relationship the best for me. I really reccomend getting this 4-part series, the writing and especially the art make it one of my most favorite venom stories.

Of course gouing by that continuity, you would see that Eddie would never willingly give up the symbiote, and that the symbiote needs Eddie..... just the way I like it.

I like Venom alot, I think he was a wonderfull character. But he was only wonderfull for his first couple of arcs, he's too samey and lacking in depth. Venom was wonderfull because he is the finale of the symbiotes storyline, the part where Peter literally fights it (and Eddie Brock).

This is the same with the movie; Venom is going to be amazing on screen, for this one movie...for that is all you can do with a character of Venom's depth. For one movie, he is the fantastic finale for the telling of the symbiote...for two he is just the villain we know, out for revenge...and Venom gets revenge by just trying to kill Spider-man. Not much plot there.

Venom: The Hunger, huh? If I can find it cheap, I'll give it a try.

the hunger arc from his mini was utter crap.

the premise was that the symbiote really did like brains... stupid.

I am more into classic villians, but the early Venom stories, cerca late 80s-95 were really great. My favorite of those being the Venom: Sinner Take All" mini series that came out in 1995. I always liked the Sin Eater, and this mini was suprisingly well written for anything Spidey related around the time of the clone saga.

I am glad to see Marvel giving Eddie back the symbiote. I hope some real good Venom stories spawn from this.

All the issues are pretty cheap here : http://www.mycomicshop.com/megastore/search?pcat=Comics-All&til=2158

I really liked the story. It dealt with the fact that the symbiote as part of it's dietary needs when bonded to a host it needs a certain brain chemical to survive. When the symbiote sucks Eddie dry of the brain chemical (a Neuro transmitter) it has to leave him to find more. The symbiote doesn't want to depend on a host anymore, so it simply eats the brains of those it comes across. (Better than kidney sucking/eating to me)

The rest of the story is Eddie escaping a mental institution and either finding the symbiote and getting it back, or destroying it.

I really liked the fact that it went into depth of just how much Eddie and the symbiote are connected. In the story, even when seperated, Eddie has been bonded with the symbiote for so long they share a psychic link even without physical contact. As well it delves into the permanent changes done to Eddie as a result of being bonded to the symbiote for so long. from internal body changes to brain chemistry and blood composition.

Most of all though it really illustates that after all they have been through together, all of the problems and difficulties they have faced, in the end Eddie and the symbiote need each other, and are meant to be together.

I liked the art as well, it gave the symbiote a very cool H.R. Giger look to it, and everthing was dirty and disgusting and gritty, the way Eddie views the world.

Actually in the first issue they have a cool sequence that shows you what Eddie's psycosis and effects of bieng with the symbiote make him see the world and people around him. I'm not gonna spoil it for you, but it ain't pretty!:woot:

The Spectacular Spider-man arc: "The Hunger"

"Venom: The Hunger" miniseries :down

I liked the Hunger mini as well. It was like Venom meets Taxi Driver in a way. Eddie and the symbiote seemed almost like a pair of fiending junkies in that one, and the art reflected the grittier sensibilities that the series of miniseries should have had the whole time.

The mini-series I liked;

Lethal Protector
Seperation Anxiety (definitely the best out of the group)
Sinner Takes All
The Hunger

Y'all are just jealous haters because Brock rocked a sweet Snake Plissken mullet for a while.

Call me weird, but I think that the Brock/Symbiote relationship has been a sad quasi-lovestory at times and the ending of the Hunger was an 'awww' moment.

Seperation Anxiety (definitely the best out of the group)

I forgot about Seperation Anxiety. I do not have the whole series, but I really did enjoy the issues I have read. As far as major Venom letdowns are concerned, let me mention "Venom: Tooth and Claw." I remember being so excited about Venom and Wolverine being in a mini together. Unfortunately, I thought the writing in that story was way weak compared with Lethal Procter, Seperation Anxiety, or Sinner Take All.

The only thing that puts me off is that the art in Venom's minis (or any time Venom appears really...) can be so hit or miss. Some artists get it perfect, others f*** it up.

Like homeboy mentioned, Venom's appearance is hit or miss. In Tooth and Claw, total friggin miss. That mini was effin UGLY, and Hama should stick to writing GI Joe. Venom is not his type of material. Venom should be dark, estranged from and loathed by society.

I do think if anything as a hero Venom was the Travis Bickle of Marvel. Depending on his mood he could do good or bad, and even when he did good he looked so wrong doing it that he was still usually shot at by the police and whatnot.

Another Venom mini that really ticked me off a bit was the "Venom: Funeral Pyre" mini series where Venom has some issues with the Punisher. This mini had some potential, but once again bad writing really screwed things up. The previous poster mentioned something about "Tooth and Claw" being ugly. I have to agree that the story and art were a big letdown. However, as far as Venom art is concerned, I really like the cover to "Venom: Enemy Within" issue 1 from 1994. Such a sweet cover!

Punisher and Venom meeting could have been raelly interesting due to the whole morals thing. But I just remember it being insanely forgettable.

At the time of the Punisher and Venom mini, both characters' other series were selling very well. I remember buying issue and thinking this would be a sweet read, but I was very ticked off when I finished. The truth is, and this is only my opinion, there has not been a decent Venom story since the mid 1990s. Period. I am talking about both Venom being in one of the core Spider-Man titles and Venom's minis as well.

I agree though The Hunger(2003) was pretty good. Everything else from the Birth of Carnage till now has been meh IMO.

I don't mind that they were trying something new with these characters because I knew it would be temporary anyways. It was kind of interesting letting the sym merge with another villain. However I am glad that they are returning the sym to Eddie and I hope that Gargan gets that new Scorpion suit and he gets more involved in some future stories as well. Who knows, when Marvel gets bored with Eddie again they will probably give it to Norman or Doc Ock. These writers seem to try anything nowadays.

You know what just hit me?

The Symbiote's been around in continuity since 1984. That's 23 years ago. Next May will be the 20th anniversary of Venom's first appearance in ASM #300.

Venom still seems like he was introduced just yesterday, yet he's getting up there in the years... Wow.

And while I'm on the Venom subject, I was just re-reading through Venom's arcs and stuff, and I must say, although he was mishandled, his stories still have a lot of charm and entertainment value in them. It's not the things I would have done with him, but I think most of his stories are still pretty solid in their own weird ways. Carnage, Toxin and the other Symbiotes notwithstanding.

I like his early stories except that they make Spider-Man act like a total chump.
Other than that, pretty solid, I'd say.

Yeah, when I was a 9 year old Venom fan I used to revel in the fact when Venom showed up Parker's balls ascended into his abdomen. I still think Venom should have killed the scarlet spider.

"The Exile Returns" was not that bad of a story. I also enjoyed the "Planet of the Symbiotes" with the Scarlet Spider. Speaking of that arc, I loved the double issues with the Scarlet Spider vs. the Lizard.

I want Eddie Back now.

The only thing that could have saved Gargan as Venom would have been if he still had the Scropion suit on under the Symbiote.
