The Rock of Ages Trailer and Poster Revealed

Julianne Hough was pretty much a "meh" in it....but Tom Cruise did pretty damn good....

I don't think Harvey's Edna would have fit in the world they created for the film.

And Erz, Cruise is pretty phenomenal.

Cruise is just ridiculous in how good he is. Singing and just his overall performance

Yeah, I heard he was good.

I just don't make it to too many movies. I've seen only 5 this year. With Rock of Ages only coming in 3rd this weekend, I really don't see this movie hanging out too long in the theaters. And seeing as Brave and Abraham Lincoln are coming out this week, this will probably fall to the wayside.

Yeah, it'll be on Netflix in two months.

Totally understand...I don't go to all that many myself. Usually if I think they will be something I want to see on the "big screen" then I go. Movies like "The Vow", etc....I usually wait and watch those On Demand...

Cruise reclaimed his hero throne for me again. He was epic in this. He was amazing. I hope he gets some recognition and the Globes recognize this movie.

I'm surprised this movie bombed with only 15 mil and 3rd place finish in its OW...I thought it would make much more than that. I grew up in the 80's so the songs from that era is huge for me, but perhaps it's not for everyone.

It wasn't exactly a movie you would go to see as a dad with the kids....so I have feeling they were elsewhere, at the beach, camping, baseball games, and other more kid friendly movies.

My first reaction is more anti-Cruise considering, how well MI4 was received but their numbers weren't spectacular domestically. But I think it's more of in general Musicals aren't huge money makers. The top domestic musical is still Grease and that's from 1978.

Even a Broadway juggernaut like Phantom only made $51.

Ya musicals are not big sales these days, plus coming out on a holiday weekend when folks are likely doing other stuff. Plus a family/animated film out. Hard competition.

It's not too surprising, the movie isn't about the pop culture '80s, but the LA rock scene '80s. Most people into that scene aren't into muscials. Plus it scored a 41% on RottenTomatoes. I saw the movie only because my fiancee wanted to see it, I took her to see the play for our first anniversary, so it's special to her. The movie certainly loses a lot moving from the stage to the screen. The play just worked better, it was a lot more fun and took itself a lot less seriously, not that the movie was serious, but it just didn't work as well.

Shame this movie tanked. Saw it the other day, and while it starts a little weird and there are a few too many characters and subplots, I still freakin' loved it. Cruise was just brilliant as Stacee Jaxx. It was seriously some of the best work he's ever done. Brand, Baldwin and Catherine Zeta-Jones also really stood out. The leads were probably the least interesting of all of the characters but I thought they did well enough. Good Lord, Julianne Hough is f***ing hot. Wow, what a body.

Seems like the older women demo kept it from bombing harder. I was honestly expecting a 50-60% drop.

It's obviously not going to recoup in any way, domestically, but perhaps it wont be as bad as RENT or NINE... or BURLESQUE.

So finally saw this....

Tom Cruise was fantastic in this movie. The trailers didn't sell me on his singing, but his performance just made it work so darn well. It was great. I also thought Alec Baldwin and Russell Brand were funny as their silly side-characters, but didn't leave a strong impact on the movie otherwise from that. Also, it was a very pretty looking movie that did feel like 1980s LA at some points.

All that said, the movie doesn't really work for me. The director brought his same camp energy that he had in "Hairspray." And while it worked there (though it's not my favorite musical by any stretch of the imagination), it falls flat here. I think that's because there really isn't much of a story in "Rock of Ages." Because "Hairspray" was already based on another movie and had to sell original songs, there was at least the pretense of a story. "Rock of Ages," I'm guessing, works on stage because you can hear all these pop rock songs from the '80s sung live with tons of energy. On screen though, it's barely a step up from Glee, if even that. So, the music needs to serve the story. Instead, there is no story to serve and some songs just feel awkward (like CZJ's "Hit Me with Your Best Shot" did not feel natural to the character or scenario when it's on screen). And most importantly, I just don't care about the main characters. Julianna Hough is very pretty and nice to look at and can really dance--though she doesn't get many opportunities here--but she nor that Diego guy can carry a movie and are boring to watch. And if I can't invest in their cliché ridden romance, I'm not investing in the "heart" of the movie.

So while it has some entertaining moments, it's not that great of a movie.

not to mention how laughable it is trying to watch that diego guy try to act like some hardcore metal singer. he looks like a neutered jonas brother.

Some random short thoughts on Rock of Ages:

Rock of Ages is a very uplifting feel good musical comedy that tells the tale of rock, however if you’ve been to musicals before with the same ”theme” or ”plot”, you will find some very familiar tropes alongside its own clichés, but for me as a movie the execution is more important and I had a fun time watching this.

Sherrie Christian (Julianne Hough) is a young girl dreaming of becoming a singer, sounds familiar? Yes, even the movie decides to make fun of this trope, but however still decide to continue with it, that’s really what I want to point out about this movie, it’s the same “Rock will never die!” musical plot you have, included with an unnecessary (not to mention bland) love plot between the two protagonists. Sherrie and Drew (Diego Boneta) a Bar assistant who dreams of becoming a rock & roll star, but attempts to become a member of a rapping boy band, since the “evil” corporations declare rock dead.

Now, what really steals the show is Tom Cruise’s performance as the fictional rock & roll legend Stacee Jaxx. Stacee Jaxx is out of control, constantly drunk, childish, impulsive and just simply out of control, hell he even sings towards Malin Åkerman’s lil’ booty, this movie goes out of control fun with Tom Cruise, and his performance, the movie’s setting & design, alongside the soundtrack is the true highlight of the movie.

The movie of course doesn’t solely rest on Cruise’s shoulders, as other actors like Catherine Zeta-Jones & Bryan Cranston play the anti-rock politician villains, because after all, movies truly need some antagonists to let the rock shine? Paul Giamatti is also in this movie, playing Paul Gill the agent of Stacee Jaxx, who also just sees musicians as mere pawns for his evil corporation, desires to make filthy money. As you can see, there isn’t any real reason to take these forms of stories seriously as they fall down to the most simplistic character types of “rock will never die” arch types.

So without any further comments I’d like to make, check the soundtrack listing or go with an open mind, if you enjoy rock in all of its forms, I’d say you can be pleased by this and have a good time with your friends. I’d also like to give it cheers up for having two unknown actors playing the biggest leads, while having Cruise as a supporting character.
