Captain Marvel The Rotten Tomatoes/Critic's Reaction Thread

Convoluted stories are my jam. I loved Crimes of Grindelwald, and that was torn apart by critics for being convoluted.

Well, for me, I only go to the movies when a) It's something the whole family likes, b) something the kids can watch), and c) we can afford to spend the 50 dollars or more to take a family of four to the movies. So, bring me a convoluted story to sink my teeth into! I just don't want 2 hours staring at scenery or 2 hours of potty jokes.

Looking like at worst it will come in at the high 70s but I think it will stay in the low to mid 80s. Pretty good.

I think we will know but certain where it will rank, by Friday or Saturday. I have a feeling UK is really going to like captain marvel, I think when it's all said and done it range from 88-93

By how things are going, it's looking very likely that this movie will end up with a lower score than that of Ant-Man and the Wasp on both RT and Metacritic.

That will be disappointing, I don't like Antman and the Wasp. I find it hard to believe that I would enjoy this less than I did that movie.

Hyper Heroes liked it, had some qualms we've heard before but say they need a 2nd viewing to truly see where it lies. They mention it tries to do some interesting things other origins don't do.
Yea, I'm seeing some of that. Seems like they tried to take some risks but it didn't pay off. It's good they tried, 22 movies in Marvel must make some efforts to keep things fresh. I hope it works out better in the sequel.

Well, as I already mentioned, I find Ant-Man and the Wasp to be good, but pretty unremarkable, a 7-7.5/10 film. Guardians 2 and Iron Man 3, on the other hand, received similar reviews and are great in my book (Guardians 2 more so, but I do find IM3 a very clever and underrated movie). So, I wouldn't judge it on that basis. For an even more recent example, I reckon most people we're pretty happy Aquaman (as I was), and it had considerably worse reviews (even though still fresh). From what I know from trailers, spots and spoilers, I'd bet I'm going to have a great time with this one. Specially pumped to see what Mendo comes up with.

A score in the 80's is still great for this IMO, considering all the negative preconceptions people already had about this movie based on the trailers and the stupid controversy surrounding Brie Larson. That's about what I was expecting anyways until those early reactions came out.

Shortly after the first reactions came out, I was going with 85% +/- 2%, which is looking like how CM may end up.

I do think there is too much focus on the specific number a film ends up with. It is more about the range. There is a significant difference between a film that gets 60% and a film that gets 90%, but a 5% or even a 10% difference isn't much. The difference between an 83% and an 88% is basically nothing.

I'm genuinely surprised this didn't crack the 90%.
I thought Marvel would put a lot of work into a movie that is starting a new franchise and has a character that is suppose to be one of the MCU faces heading into the future. It seems like they crammed way too much stuff into the movie setting stuff for the future, addressing the past... I think they lost focus on making the best movie about their title character.

So i guess Black Panther was the Iron Man of Phase 3. A successful origin story. While Captain Marvel seems like a mix of the first Thor and Captain America. Decent but nothing really special. The story repeats itself i guess.

I think the score will go up and when it's all said and done it will be 87-93

Meh, Black Panther was fine, IMO, but I’ll reserve my judgement on which is a better origin film after after I’ve seen CM. Personally, CM sounds like it has a more complex storyline, which is something I like. To each their own.

I wouldn't be so sure. We are already over 100 reviews and things don't seem to be getting better at this point.
It's now at 83 %.

3 rotten and 3 fresh reviews incoming.

It could theoretically but the chances are slim to none. I think it would have to get 100+ fresh scores in a row

Yes! My 4th and final personal barometer critic, Peter Travers, loved it. So it’s 4 for 4 with me, meaning I am officially in worry-free mode til Thursday! :D
I've never tried to compare my taste in movies to that of any critic. I mostly agree with RT, but I don't let that persuade me to see or skip a movie, I just check out the movie I'm interested in.

Yeah, at this point it will be a miracle if it stays in the 80s.
Captain Marvel, lowest rated movie of Phase 3. Who would've thunk.

That's not happening at this point, looking like 78-82, I hope I'm wrong.

Don't put too much weight on these scores. I'm not ashamed to say that Age of Ultron is one of my favourites in the MCU and that movie has a 75% RT, which is still a good score!
