The Runaways Thread

oooooh yeah.....duh. that was only staring me in the face.

then what was that part with the Swarm? Gert said that if she died because she's allergic to bees, OL would too. oy. maybe Gert never really died, but its some time travel thing. which honestly, I've been expecting this whole time. but I think that would be a little "meh".

Well, Gert transferred her bond with Old Lace to Chase, but based on what people are saying, it doesn't sound like [blackout]Chase died with Old Lace[/blackout], either. Maybe Gert was just mistaken. Or Immonen forgot about that detail. I don't know, I didn't read the issue. I'm going entirely on hearsay.

Who returned in the issue? It said one would die and one would return? I haven't had a chance to pick it up yet.

PS Has everyone checked out the Runaways Theme Song on Marvel.com?

No one's back yet. They said whoever it is, and it's looking to be [blackout]Gert[/blackout] based on a solicitation cover, but those are misleading, would be coming back sometime during the arc, not necessarily during the first issue of it.

And no, I haven't.

Kiel Phegley: Because of Kathryn Immonen and Sara Pichelli’s debut issue this week, we’ve got a lot of "Runaways" related questions. To start the ball rolling, Toboe asks, "Is Kathryn Immonen's run on 'Runaways' gonna be a short one like Whedon and Moore's or is she gonna stay for the foreseeable future? The book sure would benefit from a stable creative team for a while."

Joe Quesada: We're definitely thinking long term with Kathryn, Taboe. She's actually already done with the first four issues, and we've got about a year's worth of stories roughly mapped out. This is a great time to get in on the ground floor with Kathryn and the Runaways, so yes, we do have long term plans.

Kiel Phegley: User Personamanx had a few questions that fell into the Runaways camp, starting with "Is the new 'Runaways' creative team really gonna bring Gert Back? I loved Gert as did most "Runaways" fans, but come on!!! 'Runaways' has always stood out to me as a unique, and original book, and it saddens me to hear that this new team is running with such an overdone, and clichéd plot-device. I'll still read the book whether it happens or not, but I cannot lie about my displeasure."

Joe Quesada: Personamanx, while I'm not going to confirm or deny... but let's just say, for the sake of argument, that the creative team is planning to bring her back. How do you know exactly how it's going to happen, and how do you know it's going to be cliché? Realistically, you should wait to read the story and…

Wait for it…

See-what-happens!

Look, I understand how it works: fans hear something, read something and are quick to react. But haven’t we all learned after all this time that it’s best to wait for something to come out before condemning it? But hey, I'm not going to promise that you're going to love or hate what we do, all I ask is that you just wait until you read it. After that, lets discuss it as much as ya want.

Okay, so now all that said, how about something Runaways-related that’s sure to make you smile! Here’s a “Runaways” trailer along with a new theme song by Marvel Editor Nick Lowe.

Kiel Phegley: Personamanx also asked, "Joe, are there any plans on releasing The 'What if the Runaways became the Young Avengers?' as a one-shot? Because I had virtually zero interest in all of the main stories in those 'What Ifs,' and I think that I’m not the only one.

Joe Quesada:
While there are no plans for releasing it as a one-shot at the moment, the story has been compiled and can be found in the “What If?: Secret Wars” TPB. Pick up a copy and C.B. Cebulski will personally send you an email of thanks.

Kiel Phegley: One last one from Personamanx that is sort of Runaways-related: "Is Brian K. Vaughan planning on doing anything with Marvel in the near future?"

Joe Quesada: We've talked to Brian about a few things, but my understanding is that he's finishing up his "Ex Machina" stuff and doing some more creator-owned work after that. But Brian knows, and we made it crystal clear to him, that if he ever wants to come back and dabble in the Marvel Universe, we'd love to have him here. He's one of the absolute best writers in the industry, and I read everything he does. The guy is just a magnificent talent.

Kiel Phegley: The last bit on Runaways comes from ScottyQuick, who says, "I'm a big fan of Adrian Alphona's art. He's one of the few comic book artists that I love reading in public, because it's fun to show his art off to my friends. When I heard he was going to be on ‘Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane’ Season 2, one of my favorite books, I was so excited. Now that he's returned to comics, do you have any projects for him, and will we see the ‘Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane’ series again?"

Joe Quesada: I don't know if anybody caught it, ScottyQuick, but he just did an eleven-page story for the "Captain Britain" annual. You should definitely check that out, and as a matter of fact, we'll throw a couple of pages into the column just to show you what Adrian is doing. He's an incredible artist. And yes, Adrian is doing some Marvel stuff right now, but we're just not ready to talk about it just yet.

I got a feeling it'll be Alex and not Gert that comes back.

I hope so anyways. I mean what can you really do with Gert's return?

Rekindle her romance with Chase. Add some snark to the proceedings in future issues. Um... I guess that's it.

oooh, I know why OL didn't die when Gert did. Gert transferred the link before she actually kicked it. but it looks like the empath link isn't as strong with Chase as it was for Gert. or they just kinda ditched that concept. which I really hope they didn't.

and I really hope that if they bring Alex back, they bring the Giborrim back. they were trapped in the same dimension.

PUBLISHER: Marvel Comics
COVER PRICE: $3.99
RELEASE DATE: Wed, July 22nd, 2009

“Home-Schooling” One has fallen. The life they’ve built is coming apart at the seams. Can the kids hold themselves together and make it through this? Who is Hunter Stein and what is in the mystery box that he’s after? Part 2 (of 4).

I really hate myself for saying this but Yost's stand alone issue(#10) was better than Moore's entire run. Seeing the Runaways get along w/ the Young X-Men was awesome. Molly and Wolverine having "a moment" wasn't sickening like I expected it to be. I feel like Yost really wrote the Runaways well  Props to Yost for always including Loa and Match when he has the YXM's do anything. They're too often forgotten

Do I want him on the book permanently? No, cuz 80% of cast would be dead within a year but he did a great job :o

RUNAWAYS #13

STORY BY Kathryn Immonen
ART BY Sara Pichelli
COVER BY David LaFuente
PUBLISHER: Marvel Comics
COVER PRICE: $2.99
RELEASE DATE: Wed, August 26th, 2009

It’s the end of the Runaways’ California dreamin’ as they attempt to make their escape from Klara’s chlorophyll lockup…only to be denied by heavily armed outside forces who are about to foreclose on the property in a big way! Chase finally tells the truth about a violent event in his past. And when the kids have no choice but to turn to Hunter Stein to find a way out of this mess, he reveals a Malibu Beach House secret they never would have guessed. But it’s not easy sailing because Chase is about to make a unilateral decision that looks a lot like...murder?!

Well, he kinda ditched her actually, for a red head who could walk on air back in 1907.

I don't think Nico saw it that way. But, ya know, kids and their drama.

Is this title being cancelled? I read on a website that the writer and artist of Runaways will be doing a character spin off series of that new X-men girl character. The one with the pixie wings that are pink and she has a sword...forgot her name.

I really hope Runaways stays on track! This is my current favorite Marvel title right now....I don't want it cancelled!

Yeah, writers do multiple projects all the time. Look at Brian Michael Bendis.

Heh, you kinda said her name right there. :cwink:

As they said, it's not canceled, not yet at least. Though I really wish people would pick it back up again. It really is back to being almost as good as when Vaughn was back on. Hopefully the tease of a certain someone returning will get people to give it another chance.

I was really excited when I saw the first preview of the new creative team. I thought it was going to return to the gloriousness of when Vaughn was on it. but to be honest, I'm not as impressed as I thought I was going to be. It's still leaps and bounds better than what Whedon did I think. but I would probably keep it about even with Moore's stuff. Maybe slightly better.

but I'm not really liking the whole "is Chase a killer or not?!?" thing for some reason. the introduction of his uncle doesn't seem necessary or natural.

I think I just got my expectation up too high. so I'm slightly disappointed.
it's still worth the three bucks a month, though.

I'm trying to remember, but isn't this supposed to be the "dark secret from Chase's past" that's been hinted at the entire series?

I dont know if that could really be considered a secret though. He admitted to killing someone a LONG time ago...

I remember when the Runaways went to New York, Chase said he once killed a guy and dumped the body. He later told Nico that it was a lie, and that he sometimes thinks the stuff he makes up is true. Annnddd now it's true again, except it turns out the dude was his uncle.
