The Runaways Thread

True, it's no longer my favourite Marvel title, even ASM has picked up in the last two issues, I'm considering actually paying money for it again. After, you know, I get a job or something. In fairness it's not like Klara can't be killed off or sent back to the past or, hey, if she's really time-sick she can become the Iniative agent to the Amish Community.
Actually, that might work as a mini.
Where was I? Oh yes, defending my decision to spend my money. I wouldn't call it a waste. It hasn't set the world on fire, but I have faith in Moore to tell a good enough story to overcome the Ramos factor.
Mind you I had faith in Galway's hurling team this year as well.

1. Denial
"It's just a few online preview pages. I can't be that bad once I buy the actual book."

2. Forced Enjoyment
"The art ain't so bad. I mean, it has its own charm. Right?"

3. B****ing/Moaning
"Arrrgghhh! I hate this art so much! I don't know why I even bother reading this book! Why couldn't they get someone better? UGGGHHH!"

4. Abstinence
"Screw it. I'm not buying anything with this jerk's pencils in it."

5. Caving In For The Writer/Fear of Cancellation
"Eh. I like this book too much to let the art bother me. Besides, it's written so damn well."

Not many books are lucky enough to get their fans to stage 5, though.

Man, is that ever spot on.

i didnt mind the new issue to be honest... hasnt felt like anything different from what they were just yet... ramos works in some scenes but his action scenes suck.. i get lost in what is happening

I can't stand it. It feels like a badly drawn disney cartoon on acid.

I just found that Chase was converted back to dumb stoner style Chase, when he grew up from that with Gert's death and everything happening to them. And someone should tell Ramos that Karolina is a lesbian and therefore Xavin stays in a female form for her. Unless we are about to see Karolina put back in the closet.

Also Xavin has never cracked wise before and turning into Kevin Smith was completely out of character for him.

I think it just shows Xavin is finally bonding with the group, didnt find that out of character at all.. plus they just got back from the secret invasion... Xavin is a focal point in those stories...

Eh. Xavin can go bond his way out of existence. I still don't like him, I only tolerate him for Karolina's sake. :o

I think Xavin's only fault is his utterly slow evolution as a character... but least it seems to be finally happening.

and as for Xavin with the being a boy topic.. there was already an issue with that in the comics.. he explained to Karolina that that is his true form, and essentially that she needs to accept it at times... its weird, but he's use to being a guy, so i don't find it that awkward.

And he continued to appear in the female form anyways after that...sorry...it's mistake in the book that needs to be corrected.

The run is off to a terrible start I don't see how you can't see it. If it continues like this, the Runaways will be forgotten before they even (potentially) get a movie.

actually he still had switched back and forth since that.. sure he was female more, but he was still shown as a man at times...

Yes, rarely ever around her though.

well to be fair we dont have much time to base it on.. whedon likes lesbians.. so thats why he was a girl the whole time. and before that there wasnt much time between that convo and whedons arch..

he's also been mostly male in the ya/runaways SI cross over

Honestly he's been male way more then he's been female... and I mean, I'm pretty sure that he only becomes a female to please Karolina. Considering that Skrulls have males and females and as a Skrull Xavin is clearly a male, it makes sense that he would be male more then female when being a human.

That said... I like him better as a female...

It just makes sense for him to be more his true self. Although I guess he should be thinking about Karolina too...

I think I've pinpointed exactly what was wrong with this new issue: Moore is writing Runaways as an action-comedy, rather than an action-drama like it used to be. He's playing it for giggles. This would all be fine if this were some other book, but Runaways has always been a serious book where the characters occasionally have witty banter.

Yet another amazing Marvel title is slowly spinning down the drain, and there's nothing we can do about it. :csad:

We can not buy the book, but there's no telling message Marvel will get from that. We might want to say "Our not buying this book shows our disapproval for the creative team," but they might it interpret it as "Their not buying this book shows that nobody wants to read about the Runaways." Then they'd just cancel the book, and the characters will fade into "Occasional Mini-Series & Teen Crossover" Limbo along with Young Avengers. Granted, YA is in OMS&TC Limbo because its writer is too caught up writing episodes of Grey's Anatomy.

"In this episode, the doctors put their jobs on the back-burner to concentrate on their melodramatic personal lives." Zzzzz...

Does anyone know how long Moore is going to be on Runaways for? If he's only on board for a year or so I'm not sure if he'll rock the boat too much, also I wouldn't judge him on the first arc alone, never mind the first issue. As I've said, he is a writer who rewards patience and the longer he has with these characters the better he'll get. He ain't the problem, Wheson's delays and Ramos's art are the problems. Also he started writing these long before Whedon's arc wrapped up (remember how long ago the sketches came out?) so I say give the man a chance. Imagine what people whoditched Stragers in Paradise after the first run must have felt like when they saw how good that got with time.

So I'm going to pick this up this week. I saw it Wednesday and passed on it, but I think I'll give it a shot. I dropped the book due to Whedon's delays, but the Secret Invasion mini's got me missing the characters, so I think I'll give Moore a shot. Plus I just started picking up Moore's "Echo" and am really enjoying it, so I'm curious what he'll do with characters I like.

I feel like such a fossil. I know a little bit about the Young Avengers and nada about the Runaways.

Guess I need to get an origin TPB.

:thing: :doom: :thing:

You'd probably like the Young Avengers if you're such a fossil. They've captured the feel of the classic Avengers better than anything else bearing the name post-Disassembled.

Yeah, even the fact that they don't have a series anymore feels like the classic Avengers..:O

Supposedly Heinberg is working on some top secret project involving the Young Avengers with Jimmy Cheung. But it's not a YA book, no siree. It just involves them.
