The Runaways Thread

The Runaways fad along with the young avengers fad seems to have come and gone.
I wouldn't call them fads. Runaways got saddled with a ridiculous delay period when Whedon was on the book, which made a lot of people lose interest, and then it got saddled with Humberto Ramos' art, which many people can't stand. I jumped ship due to the latter.

Similarly, Young Avengers lost all its steam due to Heinberg not finding the time to actually write a follow-up to their first series and Marvel being too pro-creator to just hand Heinberg's notes to another writer. The characters are clearly still popular, since they're maintaining a presence in several major Marvel books to this day, 4 years after their series ended.

I also would also say that the quality of the art lately is a turn off for me lately.

Start with some mood music, and then a bottle of wine, and then.....

But in regards to the comic... the good old days. When they hired artists who could do cartoony and still maintain a level of quality. I can't STAND overly exaggerated cartoony characters.

This was when it was in it's prime: (Adrian Alphona I think?)

I'm not saying I want the same artist over and over again, but it really makes me angry when they go from an artist who at least maintains some realistic grasp of the human anatomy to someone who gets the majority of their references from nicktoons.

That is some pretty good art, but personally I have always thought Jim Lee can make any character look cool. Imagine Jim Lee on the runaways......

I thought the transition to Michael Ryan was good, but good lord was Ramos a bad decision. It's like I keep saying, Ramos' art belongs in a comedy. If I had picked up Runaways for the first time during the Ramos issues, my main complaint would've been "it's not very funny. It's supposed to be funny, right?"

Edit

Also, Ramos ruined New X-men too

You should dig Immonen then

God, I love Stuart Immonen. He has some sort of magical ability most of today's comic artists don't have, where he can switch between silly cartoony styles and serious detailed styles depending on the comic. I'd post a few examples, but his website no longer has a proper gallery that can be navigated.

I would agree that Micheal Ryan was alright as well. He was more cartoony but it was still quality.

Ramos' art has always been a pile of ****ing garbage. Funny how New X-men also had Micheal Ryan on it for awhile, and then what? They were what, like 'hmm, you know what would make this series good? A really really crappy artist!'

It's a lady Immonen.

His few issues on Ultimate X-Men were beautiful

Spoons, HOW can you defend this??

Seriously... sweet ...jesus

Why is Layla drawn as an anime character, where as Jamie is clearly drawn in a more 'american' style... neither are done well, on top of that. It's like a really really badly done fanart.

Plus don't get me started on the classic Ramos ''boot to body ratio'' dilema

Are those mechanical arms and legs on X-23? No my friends... that is the Ramos interpretation of a teenaged girls arms and legs

I got all excited reading your post Manic, only to find out it's his wife that's getting the gig. Stuart Immonen on Runaways would have brought me running back to this book.

LULZ @ ramos. total eye rape, although I did enjoy his wolverine run.:o

I will admit, I hated Ramos' boots and gauntlets for the NXM kids. But I'm pretty apathetic towards his art in general.
