I was very pleased with the Woodley casting when first announced. I liked her performance in The Descendants very much, and I had seen enough glam photos of her online to believe she could make a beautiful MJ.
When set photos surfaced, I was honestly disappointed in the look, whether it was the makeup or some other reason, her look didn't match up to what I had hoped for, but I still held out hope that through her performance she'd win me over.
With the announcement this week that her scenes had been cut and that she probably would be replaced in TASM3 and 4 due to scheduling conflicts, I was confused and somewhat relieved. Then the Gadon announcement came, and though it didn't confirm her as MJ, she immediately looked the part the way Dunst and Woodley (at least in set pics) just simply didn't.
I don't know what's going on and who will ultimately play Mary Jane, but I will say definitively that IF Webb and Sony were for some reason displeased with Woodley as MJ, whether look, performance, vibe, anything, they should replace her rather than keep her in for the reason of not hurting her feelings. There are hundreds of millions of dollars at stake, not to mention the greater good of the film, and bruised egos are a small price to pay to get it right.
I hate for Woodley to get screwed over in the process, if that's what's happened. But just like Eric Stoltz was replaced by Michael J Fox after filming began on Back to the Future, and Harvey Keitel was replaced by Martin Sheen in Apocalypse Now, it sometimes is evident after watching footage that a mistake has been made in casting, and it's then necessary to recast. It's a hard reality of the movie-making business.
I wish Woodley luck and she's on track for a fantastic career (I'm looking forward to her new Spectacular Now). But as a major fan of the first The Amazing Spider-Man movie, I want the sequels to be as good as they can be. And that means getting just the right actress to play Mary Jane, just as they've done for Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy.
