They can/will reboot when the actors age out of their roles, which is a very real possibility. Also, Lawrence and Fassbender are in pretty high demand. I'm sure they won't be terribly "cheap" for much longer. Lawrence in particular what with the Hunger Games and an Oscar, her asking price has probably gone way up.The only way I see Fox legitimately rebooting X-Men is if they come into contractual issues with this franchise's major players (be it actors, producers, directors, etc) a lá Spiderman. This franchise is too successful and invested to be rebooted from scratch anytime soon. Batman had become a critical joke and did not perform well financially--hence the legit reboot.
I think we're seeing Fox take a page from Marvel and planning larger more connected projects down the line. These might allow for a "tonal reboot" from film to film (like an X-Force) film. With a broader vision, they can plan for when actors will no longer continue the character and perhaps bid a farewell to their characters in films and introduce new characters to "carry the torch" so-to-speak.
No, Casino Royale was a reboot. It sent Bond back to his early years and has been slowly reintroducing characters like Moneypenny and Q in the sequels. Judi Dench reprising M kinda made it complicated.Batman is one of those exceptions IMO. Just because the character and the world is SO HUGE and so iconic to American pop culture, the stories of that character will be told until the world exists no longer.
But X-Men aren't iconic as Batman. Amazing Spider-Man is the most unnecessary movie I have ever seen in my life. Man of Steel I haven't seen yet, I don't particularly care for Superman, but Superman kind of sits in the same category as Batman.
As far as other reboots:
-Star Trek 2009
-Casino Royale (although I don't consider this a reboot so much as a standard Bond recasting)
-Incredible Hulk
-Already discussions of Fantastic 4 and Daredevil
-Punisher War Zone
-I think Jack Ryan got rebooted, but I don't watch those movies
Daredevil and F4 need to be redone. Their original film versions were TERRIBLE. I agree about the rest. Star Trek didn't impress. Not sorry about it.
