Homecoming The Spider-Man Skepticism Thread

Well, I appreciate that (a lot, actually) but I also realize some of my opinions expressed are annoying to some posters who frequent these boards and I'd really rather not stir up any stuff like that going forward. I'd much rather people who are genuinely excited for the film share that excitement rather than arguments that go nowhere and a mod has to step in.

I consider my posts to be thread bogging because they mirror other opinions/arguments expressed by those whom aren't too popular around here for one reason or another and, as I said, I really don't want to stir up anymore drama between pro and anti Civil War/Homecoming sentiments so I'm just going to pop up in this thread every now and again.

Besides, I've already made peace with the fact that I just may not like this take on the character after Homecoming and, if so, I just won't be around this particular sub-forum and I'll stick to The Comics section or past films sections.

No biggie either way. :yay:

 I think this would be the best thread to discuss criticisms, doesn't bog down the main thread and doesn't cause unnecessary conflict... I think I may be frequenting this particular thread more often lol

1. The film will reference Spidey’s famous origin story, but don’t expect any flashbacks to it.

Figured that.

2. Michael Keaton is the rare Marvel supervillain to have a family and be a father. “He’s got sort of a Tony Soprano mentality,” Carroll said.

That's cool.

4. Spidey’s web shooters have been upgraded in that they have various settings to them. “He can scroll through different web settings, like spinning web, web ball, ricochet web… all of the stuff we can see him do in the comics, Tony has built into this [suit],” Carroll said.

Glad we're gonna get to see that, even if it's a Stark idea.

6. You will hear about Uncle Ben even though he doesn’t make it into this movie. “We’re trying to tell is this sort of fun story of about a kid who is doing all the wrong things for the right reasons,” Carroll said. “And once you [bring in Uncle Ben], it stops becoming a sort of fun movie about a kid trying to be a kid. He’s mourning the loss of a parent.”

Thank goodness.

7. Don’t worry, Robert Downey Jr. is in more than two scenes. “He’s in like five or six scenes,” Carroll revealed.

Meh.

8. No OsCorp in this Spider-Man film. Producer Eric Carroll stressed that they went above and beyond to present a film that was unlike any of the others that have come before it. “We figured, honestly, if there was a way to do this movie without mentioning anyone who has been in any of the past films with the exception of a couple of staples, like Flash and Aunt May, that might be a good thing to do,” he said.

That was a given.

9. Another Spidey staple not featured: The Daily Bugle. “We toyed with it for a while,” Carroll said. “But again, we didn’t want to go down that road right away and if we do a Daily Bugle, we want to do it in a way that feels contemporary.”

That was also a given.

10. Although this is a much younger and much different Spider-Man than we’ve seen previously, actor Tom Holland did borrow bits and pieces from both Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire’s takes.

“I think from Tobey I’m taking his sort of less cool side of things, whereas Andrew was very cool and very sort of contained,” Holland said. “But then with Andrew, I thought his Spider-Man was fantastic. I thought when he was in that suit, I thought he really came to life, and so there are two things I am taking from both people. For me, it’s just making sure I feel like a kid on set, and really be the kid that everyone wants to be, and just have fun with it, and see a superhero really enjoy having his powers.”

I mean, if that's what we got with Civil War then this isn't be good for me until the inevitable Uncle Ben stuff.

There are multiple massive set pieces but none of them will feature the high-flying Spider-Man you remember from the previous films. “We will not see him swing down Fifth Avenue in this movie,” said Carroll. “We will not see him 40 stories off the ground, acting like that is not the most terrifying thing he will do that day. It’s something we’re going to show him working up to. He’s going to work up to being the Spider-Man we know he’ll become someday.”

Bummer, especially about the swinging.

Peter Parker, of course, is the main one. He’s got his responsibilities and desires as Spider-Man, but there’s also his Aunt May, played by Marisa Tomei. It’s a younger version of the character that’s described here as more of an older sister rather than a motherly figure. Then there’s Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), whom Parker calls for help probably a little too often, and Holland describes also as kind of Peter’s bigger brother. At school there’s Liz (Laura Harrier), the girl he likes; his best friend Ned (Jacob Batalon); and another friend, Michelle, played by Zendaya. (As for the rumor that Michelle is Mary Jane, all Watts would say is, “Any rumor could mean a million things because so many different things have happened in the comics.”)

Younger sis Aunt May? Ehh. I'd rather cool Aunt over that.

Also Stark being a bigger brother to Peter is..odd.

Much of that drive might come from one crucial Spider-Man character that was mysteriously absent on set: Uncle Ben. Ben plays a crucial role in Peter’s origin, and while producers would confirm he’s mentioned in Homecoming, it was unclear to what extent or if that role has been changed.

Here's hoping it's nothing too drastic but I wouldn't be too surprised otherwise.

Edit: Putting everything in spoiler tags just to be safe. There are some spoilery things in here, after all.

Gotta say, we more or less share sentiments on alot of the points they mentioned, but somehow overall I'm more interested in the movie than I was before :funny:
Also, about that big sister May thing:

I think the relationship between Peter and May is one of my favorites throughout the movie because—oh gosh I’m going to give so much away, I can’t do that— um, she’s much younger and she’s full of life. There’s a moment where she drops Peter off to a party, and she’s also going off to a party herself, and they have this sort of friendship between the two of them. And there’s this beautiful scene where something happens and Peter basically breaks down with May, and then she sort of becomes his mother, and that’s a really nice turning point for Marisa [Tomei] in the movie.

Looks like that won't last

That's a relief, then.

Definitely. Initially, when I saw the younger casting of May, I imagined/hoped for her and Peter to have a similar relationship to Aunt Cass & Hiro in Big Hero 6 (with Uncle Ben being the Tadashi/recently deceased member of the family) so I'm hoping that their relationship leads up to something similar

That could be really nice. I loved Big Hero 6.

So unlike some of the others here, I was optimistic about Tony's involvement in the film.

Then I scroll through here and see this:

Ouch. That hurts. Like, really hurts. :csad:

I mean, it's not just the fact they're classic Peter inventions. Different types of webbings emphasized his creativity. I always felt he had that childlike sense of wonder to his creativity guys like Pym and Tony didn't. Now that creativity is the byproduct of Tony's mind. Same with the spider-signal.

Really not fond of this.

That is the worst part of Peter's MCU for me.

I'm sure I will enjoy this movie but this thing is a concern..

Billionaire Uncle Stark : "Hey Peter ! Inventing something (new suit /webbing/gadgets) ?"

"Don't bother, I have got a really Hi-tech version of what you are developing here, just take this new advanced version for free"

I dont have any skepticism anymore. I know this movie is not anymore my Spider-Man and mythos I grew up with. So why the hell would I care anymore? If movie is good, movie is good. I'll enjoy it, but it simply never will be Spidey adaptation I wanted or waited. It's too derivative from original material to get on board with it.

I'll give it a shot, but hype is dead. Better said, hype never was. Maybe it's better this way. Who knows.

Something else that's kind of bugging me is it seems like they're really trying to force the whole "Look! He's a kid" thing. How many times does he have to say "Awesome"?

So Aunt May starts out as "the big sister" ...

God this all sucks so bad for me as a fan of the character i thought this movie would be about.

Well, there's a reason a said someone is not so liked. There's a right or I should say a more thoughtful and appropriate way to voice a negative viewpoint.

Again, I don't think you should confine yourself to this thread just because you may think badly about the movie. If everyone in the GD thread were all happy about the film, there'd be nothing interesting to discuss, really. Though I honestly wish some wouldn't take it all so personally. And part of me thinks those worried about negativity are probably just worried their own opinions might be affected which, imo, is just a really dumb reason to want to put negative responses to something, in a dark, unseen corner.

I'd prefer to have open discussions with someone about differing opinions. I mean, isn't what this site is intended for? I certainly think so.

The only thing that interests me in this movie is Michael Keaton unfortunately. Don't like most of the decision making that went into this reboot (The High School angle, the rest of the cast (Tomei is great but again, the HS angle Aunt Hottie just doesn't seem right), the costume, the over-emphasis on diversity (don't care how that sounds, it's obvious what they're trying to do). And after having what I felt like was an great Spiderman actor in Andrew Garfield (Yeah, yeah, the second movie was horrible, not his fault), it's just hard to get excited again. My 2 cents and why I don't really post on the Spidey boards anymore, don't really have anything nice to say or be excited about outside of Keaton being awesome as always.

Not if you don't approve of what we've seen so far, cause in that case you're basically an entitled fan according to some (not all) posters with an opposing view :o

Something else that's kind of bugging me is it seems like they're really trying to force the whole "Look! He's a kid" thing. How many times does he have to say "Awesome"?

How many times do teenagers have to say "like" in their sentences?

Tony was also the one to make the spider-signal.

I'm fine with Stark having a hand in the suit and gadgets as I feel that the MCU has been pretty consistent about most people not being able to build hi-tech stuff without the requisite finances and resources. I do agree though that Peter should have more involvement with that stuff though than it seems that he does.
