Description

Over the past thirty years, Stephen King has received enormous attention from both the popular press as well as academics seeking to explain the unique phenomenon of his success. Books on King explore his canon in religious contexts, in political and historical contexts, in mythic—specifically Jungian—contexts, in Gothic/horror (especially American literary) contexts, and in a wide variety of other contexts appropriate to a writer who, over the past half century, has become “America’s Storyteller.” Beginning with a never-published chapter authored by Stephen King himself on the influence of the genre on his own writing, King Noir makes an invaluable contribution to King scholarship by placing King’s works in conversation with American crime fiction.

On Joy, A new Foreword To On Writing

In early May this year, Hodder & Stoughton produced an updated paperback edition of On Writing with the inclusion of a new foreword from Stephen King, the title of which is On Joy (Scribner did the same in the US).

The standard edition of the book has the same ISBN but, on the cover, it’s mentioned that there is a new foreword.

As bookstores order the book they will get the new version but some might have the old one is stock so please look closely at the cover if you’re out to get the new edition.

Here is the cover by Ben Baldwin for next years omnibus edition of The Gwendy Trilogy. It will be published by Gallery Books (in the spring next year) and by Cemetery Dance (later in 2025). King and Chizmar have written a joint introduction entitled Butch and Sundance.

I’m still hoping for a version where they have edited the three books into one.

Cover & Excerpt From Never Flinch; King’s New Book

Section: Book » Never Flinch
Here is the cover for King’s next book Never Flinch. Entertainment Weekly has an excerpt that you can check out here. The book is release on May 27, 2025.

Never Flinch features intertwining storylines — one about a killer on a diabolical revenge mission and another about a vigilante stalking a feminist celebrity speaker. The novel features a host of familiar characters, including King's beloved Holly Gibney and gospel singer Sista Bessie, as well as riveting new faces that include a villain addicted to murder.

"When the Buckeye City Police Department receives a disturbing letter from a person threatening to 'kill thirteen innocents and one guilty' in 'an act of atonement for the needless death of an innocent man,' Detective Izzy Jaynes has no idea what to think," reads the book's description. "Are fourteen citizens about to be slaughtered in an unhinged act of retribution? As the investigation unfolds, Izzy realizes that the letter writer is deadly serious, and she turns to her friend Holly Gibney for help."

"Meanwhile, controversial and outspoken women’s rights activist Kate McKay is embarking on a multi-state lecture tour, drawing packed venues of both fans and detractors," it continues.

"Someone who vehemently opposes Kate’s message of female empowerment is targeting her and disrupting her events. At first, no one is hurt, but the stalker is growing bolder, and Holly is hired to be Kate’s bodyguard — a challenging task with a headstrong employer and a determined adversary driven by wrath and his belief in his own righteousness."

Eventually, the twin narratives converge, resulting in a spectacular, chilling climax.

Looking forward to it. :D I've loved all of King's stuff.

I’ve got a lot of catching up to do where Holly Gibney is concerned. The Outsider is the only one I’ve read with her in it. Spoiled a bit of the Bill Hodges trilogy for me, but to be fair, it’s been a little while, so I’ve now forgotten some of what I’ve had spoiled for me.

All the books with Holly in them were great. :)

King On The KingCast

Posted: January 29, 2025, 13:36
Sections: Book » The Talisman 3, Book » Never Flinch
Today King returns to The KingCast and during the hour they cover a lot. Here are the most important things that they talk about.

The Talisman 3
There will be a lot of Nebraska in The Talisman 3.

King is using Peter Straub’s words in The Talisman 3.

King confirms that The Territories are The Mid World and The Mid World are The Territories.

Characters from both The Talisman and Black House are in The Talisman 3.

Never Flinch
King rewrote Never Flinch completely after his wife Tabitha said it didn’t work.

Other news
King had an idea for the last book about the character Travis McGee (he shares part of it in the episode) but the relatives of John D. MacDonald said they didn’t want King to do the book so it didn’t happen and won’t.

It was King’s idea to do the harlequin cover for Misery.

King don’t have trunk novels but he have some unfinished stories that he thinks aren’t good enough.

Check out the episode (#265) here.

King Sorrow & More To Come From Joe Hill

Joe Hill's UK edition of King Sorrow is now available to order signed from Waterstones and I must say that the cover looks great.

I'm reading the book as we speak and trust me, you don't want to miss this one.

In his recent newsletter Joe also mentions that he's almost finished with yet another book and that he aims for one new book / year for a few years to come.

I’m in the home stretch on a new novel and have (possibly unfounded) hopes of finishing by the end of the month. It always takes longer than I think it’s going to. Still: I remain optimistic that I might be able to stay on track for a book a year for the next few years. Wouldn’t that be cool?
