I'm still hoping for an improvement, regardless of what he said.

Me too. Not sure what kind of an improvement...but some improvement.

Between the color filters that Singer had chosen for SR and the ones that Snyder had chosen for MOS, which would you guys say is your least favorite one?

I'd take MOS's look over SR's. SR looked so glossy and fake. It added to that feeling that the movie trying to be in the past and present simultaneously.

That's likely Snyder's call. I have an inkling this desire to present the franchise as mature and grounded directly resulted in the washed out tones. There's a (misunderstood) notion that brightness and color directly correlate with campier affairs.

It is misunderstood. A brighter movie just makes things look nicer. If anything, more natural colors should fit with MOS's tone.

I meant Superman Returns (as was the topic), not Batman Returns. But thanks for the history lesson (not being sarcastic, thanks)

LOL I naturally assumed you meant Batman Returns.

Superman Returns I seem to have purged from my memory

Naturally! That being said, I just rewatched Batman Returns this Christmas after not seeing it in yeeears and I was shocked how different it looked from Batman (89). 90% of the movie felt like a small scale set. Gotham looked scarcely inhabited compared to the first movie. Is that a common complaint?

Same. Singer's Metropolis looked way too clean and pristine compared to Man of Steel's more rugged feel.

Yes. The production designer from the first film died (from suicide) so that explains the vast disparity between the two.

Personally I actually liked Singer's Metropolis. It didn't feel like Chicago or New York. It felt like a unique city. Partyl because it was filmed in Sydney which itself feels like a parallel Earth American city. It's one of the few things I liked about Superman Returns.

I didn't see enough of Metropolis to really judge it in MoS but to me it just seemed like Chicago with alot of CGI Skyscrapers.

And even then the CGI skyscrapers were incredibly boring. They all looked like 70's boxes. I could have used some ultra modern skyscrapers like those in Shanghai or in the vein of the Freedom Tower.

Ironically I felt like Snyder's Watchmen did a better job of recreating the 89 Batman films dirty overpopulated streetscape than Returns' surreal winter wonderland did.

Same. The introduction to Metropolis (first scene) should have been a grand, sweeping scene that showed it as a unique city with character.

I don't buy this. They're not even in post-production to say that. And also is this the official Fong's twitter? I don't think he has time or was permitted to say these things in that time especially with the secrecy surrounding the movie.

I asked him about colours as well and his answers were similar...

They have a different production designer this time - Alex McDowell (Fight Club, Minority Report, Watchmen) worked on MoS but for BvS he was repalced with Patrick Tatopoulos (I, Robot, Die Hard 4, Wiseman's Total Recall). Also Larry Fong (300, Watchmen, Super 8) didn't work on MoS, it was Amir Mokri (Bad Boys 2, Lord of War, Transformers 3). So we'll see some changes, I'm sure. However I think Snyder has his visual style and... all his movies look very similar.

Well, I really like the design of one of those movies so there's hope

I'd reduce the weird piping on the suit a bit (It looks odd to me the way it also runs down his legs). Maybe tweak the belt design a bit too?

I think MOS's Metropolis needed to have a bit more character. It was a tad bland. But we didn't get to see it much. I just don't want it to have character like SR's Metropolis did. It was too retro.

That's the word there. Retro. Some people forget that Metropolis in STM was purposefully retro. It would be like making a film today and setting it in the 80s (i.e. Watchmen). With SR they tried to keep the STM/1940s aesthetic and it felt completely foreign. Doesn't work unless you're doing a period piece. That's also how I felt about Raimi's Spider-Man movies too but to a lesser extent. But the Metropolis from SR (to me) did have lots of great character detail that I hope makes it into MOS2

Outside of the "HIS GIRL FRIDAY" vibe in the D.P. office scenes, what was "Retro" about the obviously modern day (for the summer of 1977 that is) NYC that's seen in S:TM?

I liked the sets from SR, I liked the scale the city had. They were never a problem with that movie to me.

I agree. The only thing that felt retro at the time of that film was Clark Kent's fashion sense and his antiquated morals and well mannered demeanour when juxtaposed with Lois' upbeat yet cynically independant modern city girl attitude.

That was part of the "fantasy come to life" aspect of S:TM. Superman/Clark was this figure the Baby Boom generation had a deep sense of nostalgia for at the time. Reeve was playing it like Superman literally stepped off the page and was now coming into contact with "the real world of 1977", or at least as real as was going to be allowed for 1978. Still, the attitude that Lois has in her interview ("You're going to end up fighting every elected official in this country") and the other (even the "campy") interactions Superman has show a recognizable post Watergate America.

And it paid off beautifully.

Would anyone be opposed towards having a new Amanda Waller introduced in this film?

If it were a simple Superman sequel with a small Batman role. Yeah i would love to have CCH Pounder or Alfre Woodard or... and I'm being serious here because I think she could pull it off Whoopi Goldberg.

I never found Waller that interesting in the comics. But the DCAU made her a fierce intimidating female character. I loved how she could keep up with and even have Batman at a loss for words at times. Though TIMM made her a little too bad I think. I like her when she's a bit more morally ambiguous.

No one should, Arrow's Waller is not good enough for the cinematic universe, that's why is better to keep both universes separate, it wasn't part of the plan anyway, it shows with some of Arrow's casting decisions.

Back on the color palette, just because someone said no months ago, it doesn't mean they won't tweak the colors a bit. With the JL involved, maybe Snyder will, and if Affleck ends up directing the JL movie, they will have to reach an agreement to make everything coherent visually.

Regarding the suit, I think Superman should have a belt for practical reasons, like keeping a bluetooth to communicate with other JL members, etc. The question is, yellow, red or another color? :hmm

I'd like to see a red ''belt'' (or an extension of the ''pipping'') since there ain't no trunks in the area and I fell that is the suits only weakness, it doesn't quite sufficiently break up the sea of blue when it's lit up, it only looks good when the suit appears darker. But...

...I hope that they tweaked the suit itself to be brighter, since Fong crushed peoples hope of having more color in the film (although he could be misleading). Because at times in MOS the suit looked on the black side of navy blue and sometimes grey-ish. And if Batman is in grey/black and they have night scenes with him and Superman they'll look too much alike. And that would bother me.

I don't think Metropolis in SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE was intended to be retro at all. Maybe in the pre-credits sequence, when it's set in the past.

But the Metropolis of the film featured modern advertisements, no phone booths, guys yelling "Say Jim! That's a bad outFIT!"...yeah, I'm just not seeing it.

I think Metropolis was very much intended to be modern for the time the film was made.

I'm not saying it was a period piece, just that it had a retro aesthetic. Similar to Superman Returns. The background people/characters were all modern to their respective time frames but the cityscape itself had a 1930s/40s art deco vibe. Just like Raimi's movies.
