Hush? What's that?
Batman TPB. Superman is in it as well. I hope I'm not confusing my comics here (they kind of blend into one another after a while LOL), but there's a great scene where Poison Ivy seizes mind control over Supes and he fights Batman - without restraint. Hee! Y'know that pwned panel, with Supes holding Batman by the neck at his knees? That's the one. LOL

I got some terrible news today about my dog... I'm very upset about this.

He's been having some intenstinal bleeding which is highly unusual for such a young dog, he's not even two yet, but it seemed that was probably caused by a bacterial infection. Or at least that's what they thought two weeks ago.

He seemed like he was better up until saturday, but now he's having blood clotting problems.

There are really two likely causes for that are a very rare blood disorder that is unlikely, and rat poisoning.... Someone may have poisoned my dog.

We don't have any poison in the house, we have kids and no rodent infestation. Why would we have that?

They're doing a very expensive blood test to find out for sure if he's got this rare blood disorder, if it's not that then poison is the next likely diagnosis.

I'm devastated... he may not pull through with either diagnosis.

oh trip, I'm very sorry to hear that :( He's a beautiful, happy puppy. I will keep you and him in my thoughts, and I sincerely hope he pulls through. He's still young which is good, since it makes him more likely to pull through a procedure. After losing my buddy Mickey, two weeks ago, I dont want anyone to go through what I did, and wish him all the best. Please let us know what happens with this...

Thanks guys... here I am at work and I can't keep from crying about this.

Either eventuality is awful, but if someone poisoned him my faith in mankind will take a serious hit...

I'm a pretty trusting soul, but for someone to stoop to that I cannot even imagine.

It would probably be one of my neighbors and if that is the case it makes me doubly glad to be finally leaving this stinky cow town far behind me for good. Anyone who would do that to an innocent dog intentionally doesn't deserve the air that they breathe.

He's such a great dog, like your cat was. He'll play until he can't anymore... Even with how sick he is he still loves to get a back scratch and even wagged his tail when the vet came in to look at him this morning.

I really hope he pulls through. Nobody that full of love and life deserves what he is going through.

Thanks for the kind words, it means a lot.

Whoa! Do your neighbors have motive to do that? Access to your dog or yard?

Since the blood test for the rare disorder is so expensive, could they have done a presumptive test for rat poison or at least given him Vit K just in case, assuming it's the more common form of the poison? (If he was poisoned with the Cyanide variety, he wouldn't have survived.)

My grandmother raised pure bread German Shepards. One was intentionally poised by a neighbor, but we couldn't prove it. We took his brother, Jumbo, so the same thing wouldn't happen to him. Jumbo was a good dog...

Anyhoo, I hope your pup pulls through. :(

Sorry to hear about it Trip.

I went through the same thing on June 6 of this year. I had started my move to DC been here for 2 weeks, and my gf called and told me about the dog and blood in the feces. It was really hard cause she wasn't even a year old yet.

So I hopped a plane and didnt make it in time. I was pretty messed up for a few weeks. I hope your dog pulls. Have them check for Parvo though it's a bacterial thing that I'm told is prevalent it FL.

Well, I don't know. We have some new neighbors and we aren't exactly in a neighborly sort of place so I'm not sure. There wouldn't be any other way for him to get rat poison, though...

Down in Denver a few years back there was a string of dog poisonings that killed something like 10 dogs, but that person used antifreeze laden wet dog food that they threw over the fences of the poisoned dogs... I don't know if anyone else heard about that in the rest of the country, but it got a lot of press here and that may have given someone ideas.

The doctor kept asking us if we had some poison, I think they've explored the blood disorder route mainly because the poison route is also unlikely given we don't have any.

Luckily one of the best vetrinary hospitals is over in Ft. Collins (CSU has a huge teaching hospital and they do research and stuff, they're one of the top vetrinary schools in the country). So our doc called over there to try and figure out all the potential causes for this kind of bleeding.

Now, she's doing a test that is normally only done on humans so they had to send the samples over to the hospital here in town since they couldn't do it at the vet's office.

We're not in Florida yet, still in Colorado...

Is parvo one of the things dogs get shots for? He just got his shots in April...

Oh triplet, no.

Not your puppy.

I don't know what to say. I feel so terribly for you to have to go through this, especially now that your move is upon you. Please let us know how he is doing...what the doctors have discovered from the tests. I understand how deeply animals become family members. They love you without pretense...no matter what. My heart reaches out to you right now and I pray your puppy pulls through.

Seems as if we all have experienced the loss of a pet...whether recently or in our past. This poem has been tacked up on my refrigerator and I copied and pasted it from a site online for everyone. It's helped me. Hopefully for those of you who have lost an animal family member, you'll also find comfort.

Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

It is but not all states give or require a Parvo shot (I dont know why, but that's just what my vet told me). My dog had it when she went in with her problem, but the Vet was comparing what she was going through to Parvo. He was saying the symptoms were similar. Just double check when you dog gets out of the vet that it has the shot before headed for FL.

After ruling that out they also blamed poison. But we didnt have any and we scoured the house looking for anything & everything, as a result though my gf spent a lot of time blaming herself for what happened thinking the dog may have licked something during one of their walks. Just know that these things happen and for no rhyme or reason and they are at times no ones fault.

Aww, trip.. I'm so sorry. Here I thought your pup was getting better. :(

Try and stay positive until you know for sure what's going on with him. His youth combined with your access to good vet care will hopefully carry him through this.

Damn, I hate having my IM's down. :(

Hang in there..

Triplet I'm so sorry, I had to rush over here to the Talon to see why you were so upset today. That is terrible news.

I had a German Shepard a few years back, and she used to love getting into the trash cans on Pick Up Night, our neighbor threatened to put poison down if we didnt do something. Consequently we had to tie her up every Tuesday night, for about three years, when she eventually succumbed to other illnesses.

Hope everything works out. :)

Well, the results of the blood test were inconclusive. His levels were elevated but didn't definitely point to this disease... Gee thanks. $170 bucks for that test for much of nothing...

We're doing one more blood clotting test, if the results of that are bad then he's definitely got the blood disorder and it would cost about $5000 to treat. We don't have that kind of bank and it wouldn't be a certain cure anyway. It would take another week of him suffering, and the very expensive treatments, to even know if it would work...

If he does have the disease, I forget what it's called, then we will have to put him to sleep to ease his suffering... I can't see putting him through any more of this if the cure isn't a certain one.

At this point, I'm hoping it's infection, a parasitic illness (which is annother possibility, which she didn't bring up with me earlier) or poison. At least those they can treat with a more certain positive prognosis.

I'll let you guys know, but I've been having a tough day so I'm heading home...

Thanks for everything,

Cindy

Thanks, James... he's such a good boy... I hate to see him suffer like this.

It breaks my heart.

Aw, triplet, I'm sorry to hear about this. I'll say a prayer for your doggy. (I always prayed for mine when they were sick -- my mom always said God cares about dogs too!)

Sorry to hear about your dog mine was accidentally poisoned( we think) and had severe seisours we didn't think he would make it but he pulled through and has been fine, even though we don't know what he got into it hasn't happened again. The vet also thought he might have all these serious disorders. Hopefully your dogs will just be a one time fluke he can pull through.

My heart goes out to you, Trip. I understand what it is like not to know what is wrong with a close animal friend. You must be feeling sad and worn out and like things are a little unreal. Just know that there are people out there who understand. Whatever the outcome, it's obvious you truly love your dog, and as such, will do nothing but the best for him.

As you know, I just lost my two year old schnauzer this year to a car, and it was so sudden I still have a hard time believing it all happened, so yes I get how devastating it can be and I send you a long distance super hug...2 years old is too soon to have this happen to a good friend.

Anyway, it sounds like your vet is suspecting Von Willebrand's Disease? Hemolytic anemia perhaps? There are many forms of Von Willebrand's, if that is the case. Some are more manageable than others. It's usually genetic and affected dogs are most often missing one or more clotting factors. Some forms would be more treatable than others. It is fairly common in certain breeds, but probably rare in mixed breeds....
There are tests that can pick up known substances in the blood (in less than parts per trillion) but I don't know what the cost would be. If it's a poison like Warfarin (which at low doses,is routinely given to people as a blood thinner), at least that's treatable if your dog hasn't had too much.
I doubt it's Parvo as that's a viral infection whose symptoms would be glaringly obvious to any vet nowadays, and unless you specifically request not to have the vaccine, it would be in the normal series of shots given. The only time dogs weren't regularly immunized for it, was in the early 80's if I remember correctly.
Parasites are easy to test for, rather inexpensively, so I'm surprised they didn't rule that out first.
If it makes you feel better to know what's going on, I'd certainly not hesitate to keep asking questions until you feel satisfied, after all, that's part of what you're paying for. Sometimes getting a second opinion is also helpful.
At any rate, my thoughts are with you and your doggy. I hope things will turn out well.

I'm really sorry to hear about this Trip, I'm sure everything will work out for you guys.
