Here's an interesting tidbit from the latest ish of Wizard:
Alex Ross on "Superman Returns"
"I look at [Brandon Routh's] costume as a series of choices that are the complete opposite of every choice that either I or other designers have made in the last 10 years. The really tight neckline where the collar is; the small symbol opposed to a larger symbol. I think [director] Bryan [Singer] made these choices based upon, 'Let me try these things because it's different.' Clearly not what I would have envisioned."
To play Devil's Advocate for a moment, I've often wondered how much creative input Singer had in the design itself. Obviously, he's the director, and if he says "change it," or "it's perfect," then that's the way it is and the costume director does as instructed. But I'm wondering if that silly design has/had more to do with the costume director trying to do something different than it did Singer.
Then again... Singer IS blamed for the changes made to the X-Men costumes (not that THOSE were bad - I LIKED *those* changes), so maybe he told the costume director to "update" the Superman costume too? Who knows? Just wish it wasn't the Superman costume they were "updating," but if it HAD to be done, that they would have chose a more tasteful route. Ah vell.
Considering how much A&M have been vilified for making so many "changes" to the mythos, it will be truly ironic if *their* version of the iconic suit - if they actually do it - will make fans happy. In fact, seeing a Reeve-esque scene with Welling flying out of the FOS in the costume just like in the original Donner pic would be the ULTIMATE ending for SV fans. Yeah, THAT's how it should be done. There'd be more emotion in that little scene because like the film, it represented the moment of transformation. Those are the kind of amazing things you lose in an established Superman show or film. Even if told in flashback, it's just not the same as seeing it culminate after five (or more) years of gradual build-up and character development.
Anyhoo, I agree with Ross. Big surprise there. And I have to laugh at the thought that the comics might adopt the new design. Hee. Uh, yeah, I think Ross would rather gouge his eyes out with a fork than draw the suit looking like that.
