The Wolverine The 'The Wolverine' Box Office Prediction Thread - Part 1

The Wolverine is set in Japan but couldn't attract enough interest in the country to finish above third place. A $2.4 million debut from 655 screens in Japan helped the film reach a $238 million overseas cume and $367.6 million global total. The Wolverine will try its luck in China on October 17, where a successful run could push it above the $400 million global mark.

So much for my expectations :(

Ever since Miyazaki annouced his retirement The Wind Rises is just dominating in Japan more than it normally would have.

I think around $10 million might be where it ends up.

very underwhelming.....

I thought it will at least gross $10M this weekend.

A $10 million opening weekend was never going to happen. The numbers have never been there to support that for any superhero franchise.

First Class made almost 8 million there...in its entire run according to BOM. It had an almost 2 million opening.

First Class
Opening weekend - $1,957,646 (25.1% of total)
Total gross - $7,791,919

Origins
Opening weekend - $1,903,329 (20.5% of total)
Total gross - $9,303,728

edit: I think the exchange rates (yen to dollar) affect all these totals as well due to conversion.

There is a difference between a western film based in Japan, and an actual Japanese production.

mmm, not a strong opening on Japan, taking into account the theme of the movie and Hugh as the star.

Still, the foreign market is getting bigger, and Fox should be happy about that, but one would have guessed The Wolverine would have done better in first weekend on there, also taking into account the 3D prize too.

How strange that a movie made largely in Japan and with a large Japanese cast didn't do better there. You would think audiences would be rushing to see their own country on screen in a superhero movie. I'm baffled.

Honestly, it's doing about what I figured.<shrug>

Well for one, the Japanese actors that appeared in The Wolverine aren't big stars in Japan.

It only needs 3 million to outgross the 1st Wolverine film!

Seems like it's made 5+ million in Japan. Openings of "Despicable me 2" and "Elysium" don't help much. If it ever gets to 10 million, I consider it ok with this current pace.

Shame it couldnt do a little better in Japan but if its enough to push it past Origins then thats something at least.

Week #10
U.S. $131,300,000
FOR $241,694,000
WW $372,994,000

It will outgross X-Men Origins: Wolverine in a few days or weeks.

But I'm assuming... due to general inflation and 3D prices that XO:W sold many more tickets?

Well probally the trouble is we only have inflation numbers for domestic box office.

Origins sold more tickets overall, yes.

But, this will make more money on a significantly lower budget making this film more profitable.
