The Tobey Maguire/Peter Parker Thread

Maybe we were watching a different film? I only counted one quip, and it wasn't that good

LOL! Sorry dude, maybe (definatley) quibs was the wrong word -- but the film did have a much more comedic feel than the others. I know some people have not been happy with that because the film was supposed to be 'darker', but I honestly think that the funny moments were this film's saving grace, and also the one area that had improved from the first two.

Bruce's cameo is IMO the best of the bunch.

Not so much quips but spidey/peter had more and better retorts.

I had no issue with the lighthearted comedy, the slapstick with Bruce, or even the dancing, but I draw the line with the Harry and Peter mansion fight, some of the most awkwardly embarassing and contrived one liners, made all that much worse by the horrendously inappropiate score

The score is my main problem with the film -- I find myself praying for the old themes to be played. I hated the music when he was hanging upsidedown with the symbiote for the first time, however, I did enjoy the music when he was on the church thinking.

I think a more operatic theme would of been nice for the symbiote when eh was ripping it off, something that represents pain, yet the birth of a villain.

Young was far too trigger happy with his horns.

Does Tobey look as buff in the previous SM movies? It looks like he didn't pack on much muscle this time around. He was my inspiration to become ripped (which I, thus far, haven't done...but lost 30 lbs previously and weight train). I, approximately, have the same weight/height as him.

Nope. We only see his upper pecs, which look...tolerable for Spiderman, but he said numerous times he wouldn't go through all the work-out he went on the first movie again.

That's too bad. He doesn't need to be ripped, but should look strong. I recall thinking how his traps look ordinary during the "shower" scene where he cleanses himself of the symbiote. You shouldn't need a suit to look buff as Spidey. Oh well.

I think Tobey was okay, but I've always been angry that Raimi never gave him lines as Spidey so he would actually act like Spidey in costume.

Actually, I've thought for a while that Topher Grace would have been a better Peter/Spidey then Tobey. Get him in the weightroom for a while and he wouldn't be too bad.

Topher Grace > Tobey Maguire in this film, and that's poor considering the massive amount of time Maguire had to make a good impression. Maguire's performance in SM1 was pretty good, lacking in SM2 (especially in his expression in the running jump) and just so annoyingly monotone even in the emotional beats of SM3. Mr. 7000+ has it right on this: Grace is the Spidey Maguire should have been in SM2 & 3.

Nothing like some anti-Tobey dish to start our Wednesday, courtesy of the ever-lovable Enquirer:

Tobey Not Exactly Generous With Grandpa

In a new interview with The Enquirer, Tobey Maguire’s 71-year-old grandpa says he used to live in a Chevy van but now resides in government housing in Simi Valley, CA. While Tobey raked in $32 million in 2005, he refuses to spoil his grandfather. “He’ll give me a $100 gift certificate to spend at a local supermarket or Sears,” Albert Maguire told the Enquirer. “At Christmas or on my birthday he might give me a check for $100 or maybe a little more. I get three or four gifts a year. I’m retired. I’m happy and in good health. I do nothing except make ceramics.”

I remember reading about this guy being homeless when the first Spidey movie hit. It's difficult to relate to someone making as much money as Maguire does, but I gotta think I'd at least take care of my parents and grandparents. Maybe not my siblings, aunts, uncles, or other extended family members who might wanna leech off of my wealth, but mom, dad, grandma and granddad, for sure (especially since my last grandparent died when I was 11, so I consider any adult with living grandparents to be very lucky). That's what I would do, anyway, but I hesitate to judge Tobey Maguire cuz I don't know any details of the situation. I do know he was raised by his mom, and it seems he and his dad aren't particularly close, so maybe he has issues with his paternal grandfather. Leave it to the Enquirer to dig up whatever it can to paint a hot celebrity in the most negative light possible!

Yeah, I'm kind of pissed that Tmags didn't look physically fit. Parker is supposed to have muscle definition and although, Tmags looked acceptable in sm1, his physique in sm2 and 3 was bad tha hey couldn't even show his body...and that quick flash of him akng his top off in sm2 doesn't count because he was sretching his boy out, which most people can do and look asthough they've got some muscle def going on.

Anyway, Grace should have been spidey and his performance in sm3 only proved that he would have been better suited for the role BUT unfortunately, we'll never see such perfect casting ever. *bows head in dissapointment*.

*bolded statement* <--Indeed. We're not privy to the details of this relationship (nor should we be). As far as Tobey being raised, he was passed about from family member to family member, including his mom and his dad and grandparents, etc and has said repeatedly that he feels he basically raised himself. As such he might not feel like certain family members deserve to share in his wealth. People might judge him as gruff or scroogish for not pouring out deeper contents of his pockets to this man but my guess is there's probably a very good reason for it (assuming this story is even true). Could be that Tobey is being generous with the $100 gifts. Clearly the relationship is not a close-knit one because many who are close with Tobey characterize him as a very VERY generous guy. And how close can they be if the guy is willing to trash his grandson to the Enquirer. Maybe it's this type of behavior or worse that Tobey refuses to reward by granting his time or finances. Would you want to reward that if your family member did that to you?

Some might like how Peter acted in this film, others may not.I think he acted a bit obnoxious, not selfish as he was shown in the 1990`s Cartoon when he got the Symbiote.

^^That did surprise me. For all the dark-themed advertising and the repeated epic sheen to the trailers, I assumed Peter would act (or at least portrayed to the audience) like a man on a serious, and very dangerous downward spiral--one from which there is almost no recovery. I suppose the dancing with Gwen was a little of that, but it seemed like he was just finally enjoying himself.

Tobey Maguire is a great actor. After seeing this film 3 times, I come to appreciate his performance better with each viewing. He's a very versatile actor and does the best he can with the material he is given. He's grown on me with each film and I'm glad we had him for the whole trilogy.

Sure, he looks silly sometimes and makes you laugh when you're not supposed to. But that's because some of the lines were so ridiculous. Like when he had the black suit, what was the purpose of having him talk like he was from 70s or something? "Can you dig?" "Find us some shade." I mean...c'mon. And when he was crying at the end...just a bad angle that made him look funny.

Peter Parker is not jerk. In Spider-Man 3, he was a nerd who was full of himself. The black suit amplifies the characteristics of it's host - so what you got was an amplified nerd who was full of himself - hence the dancing and the corny lines, which was all hilarious. He wouldn't become all evil and badass, because that's not who Peter Parker is. I don't get why other people can't understand this.

Check it out it's EMO PARKER
