The Tobey Maguire/Peter Parker Thread

Tobey may have a boyish face but there's no doubt he's a man. Emile looks thirteen!

emile doesnt look 13, im 14 and i look much more mature than him ,he just looks like some late bloomer who hasn't experienced puberty yet.

no seriously, he looks like a really immature adult. Seriously, he also looks like the annoying type to me.

Not only could I not see him as Peter Parker, but their's no way on earth could beyond a shadow of any doubt could that little prick be SPIDER-MAN.

I think Tobey does an awesome job and their no need for a replacement .

Agreed.

Have you guys seen Alpha Dog? If you have, you'll see that Emile doesn't look 13 or what ever but I still don't see him as a good candidate to take over the webs.

lol, I think we have a number of people here who have watched The Girl Next Door and are equating that to his ability and look as an actor. Try researching deeper before making a final judgement, watch Lords of Dogtown, Imaginary Heroes, The dangerous lives of the alter boys. He's not a great actor granted, but I can assure you neither is Tobey Maguire...the only difference is, Maguire doesn't look or act like Peter Parker. Many of you don't actually seem to remember what Parker was like before Maguire bastardized him with a completly unrecognisable portrayal. I'd rather go back to the comics roots than see another film where a 30 year old man is supposedly playing a just out of school teenager with a dopey look and a habit for whining.

It's funny I saw the majority *****ing and moaning upon Ledger's casting as the Joker, simply because he was that guy from 10 Things I Hate About You and A Knights Tale...as you can see, many have soon shut up about that. The fanboy works in mysterious ways.

yep spidey was way more wisea** in the comics the raimi interpretation is pretty beaten down

Not too mention Peter when established a few years down in the comics was actually a good looking guy, hence why he could get the attention of the hot females. Maguire however is not.

I don't think Tobey Maguire is to blame for "bastardizing the character", as you say he has. Tobey is an actor. He doesn't get to choose how he plays the role of Peter Parker, the director/writers do.

I think Tobey's done a pretty damn good job with the material given to him. I mean, look at some of the cheesy/****ty dialogue he's said in these films, especially in SM3.That's not his fault, is it? How can one be expected to deliver lines like "Can you dig?" or "I'm gonna kick some dirt in your eye". However, I though he was good at displaying the wide range of emotions he had to play in SM3.

With that said, is it time for him to give up the role? Yes. We need something new for SM4, whenever it is made.

Again I don't believe Tobey said that . Whoever this so called friend is more than likely is speaking on his or her's own opinion on how much sony should pay Tobey for coming back for the fourth movie .

Even if Tobey didn't say that, he would still be commanding a ****load of money for another Spider-man film, and he's frankly not worth it. He doesn't seem into it anyway.

I'm not sure how everyone else feels, but personally, I'm not ready to let Tobey go. To me, he defined Peter Parker the same way that Christopher Reeve defined Superman and Michael Keaton defined Batman. The only way I'd welcome a replacement is if SM4 didn't come out until like 5 years from now and completely re-invented the franchise. Personally, with Superman Returns being a sequel to Superman II, Brandon Routh didn't come anywhere near filling Christopher Reeve's shoes. However, Christian Bale did a fantastic job redefining Bruce Wayne - as Batman Begins was a completely different spin on the franchise. I don't know how they would re-invent the Spider-Man franchise, but I think it would definately be needed accept and fully appreciate any recasting.

^^Make Spider-Man...funny. Or at least trying to be funny, instead of trying to be a mime. That could help.
And keep the bad guys alive--that would work, too.

Well, you're entitled to your opinion. But even that falls short of how to completely revamp the franchise. There's a ton more to it than your narrow, pessimistic view.

IMO, it's a little too early to revamp the franchise. I want to see the future of Peter Parker and MJ in these films along with new Villians, and the future of Spiderman. That is one of the reasons I don't want them to revamp the franchise. it's not only too early but there are more stories to tell that an be pulled from the Comics and put on Film in the way that the Director wants it. As for other actors playing Spidey....nobody should play Spidey except Tobey Maguire because he is so great at being Peter Parker/Spider-man. not only has he got the great acting Skills to be Spidey but he also pulls off being a nerd really well. In the Comics, Peter Parker was a nerd who got picked on alot (I get picked on in School to because I'm a nerd. I got picked on today in the middle of class) and he was asked out on dates at times but said that he had an important exam to study for or something like that. Movie Peter Parker has some of those aspects with him and some new ones that Sam gave him. I think Movie Peter Parker is great and so is Comic Peter Parker IMO. Tobey Maguire was actually the best choice for Peter Parker and I know that People are saying he's starting to get too old because he's 31 but if you think about it, thats not that old and with just a little makeup you won't look that old. but anyway, Tobey can pull off being a 20 or 21 year old very well. Tobey can defenitley come back for Spidey4 and I personally think and hope he will because he plays the role perfectley:up:.

ive seem emile in most his stuff, still dont like him ,he still looks like a dooche to me
i rather have jake take the spot of peter than emile

I happen to agree with you about Spider-Man portrayed by Tobey; I wasn't trying to sound like an ass. I was just trying to give a small suggestion on how to improve/revamp the series. Obviously there's more to it than that, but those were two of the important ones. Sorry if I miscommunicated.

I think the entire cast and crew is comin back for one more.

^^He really doesn't say nearly as much as he should when he's fighting the bad guys, IMO. Spidey should be spouting so many quips that his enemies would be trying to kill him just to make him shut up.

But, hey, I still like him.

People who think Tobey doesn't play Peter Parker honeslty never read the Lee/Ditko years or early Romita.

Sure Romita and Lee (more Conway and after) turned him into a stud after a while and made him less introverted and he has had a slower progression of that in the movies but he didn't turn into "cool dude" Parker as that is a bit of a radical change later writers created adn not Raimi's favorite interpretation and not a realistic arc for a character in these movies to change that much under one consistant vision that doesn't have 40 years of stories...in short I think Maguire plays early Parker well and a different transistion into less of a geek, too though.

Does in the movie based video games .

Yeah, that's true, but I'm glad that he doesn't say TOO much in the movies. It works in the comics, but it wouldn't work in the movies. People would dislike Spidey more than the villains because the constant quips would get really annoying.

Which I like quite a bit, and that's half the enjoyment when I'm playing them.

Not necessarily--if the quips are actually funny, I think they would pep things up quite a bit and lighten the mood.
