The Trekkie Conundrum

and that's great....there is a time and a place for that....the problem is that Trek fans feel the need to inject their fandom into everything.....good example...last year at SDCC I was at the Eureka panel, they were taking questions, and in asking a question a Trekkie managed to cram a Star Trek reference in a question that just wasn't necessary....and to the person who was dressed as the Joker and still being a **** when the cops came 'round....not smart

But every fan of something does that? Haven't you ever been subject to an awful sports metaphor? The issue isn't that they inject their fandom where it doesn't belong it's that it doesn't belong anywhere because not enough people are receptive to it really.

When I'm with Trekkie friends I can make Trekkie-Comments and they get it, no big deal. Even if I do it when I'm not supposed to or when it's not proper. I'm sure it's the same with sports fans, except there are many more sports fans so the likely-hood of it being accepted is much higher than a Trekkie remark.

Point is, it's natural to talk about the things that you're a fan of and to associate freely with it. It's just that there are fewer fans of Star Trek to "get it" than there are of most things people are fans of.

Yeah!!!:cmad::cmad: At least Batman fans don't do anything like that.....or Star Wars fans.....or Smallville fans....or Roarshach fans....or Deadpool fans.................

The people I saw ST with yesterday were definitely Trekkies. I mean they were the epitome of the word. They laughed every 5 seconds as lines of the movie that must have been references to the shows over the years. It was.....uncomfortable.

And whenever someone starts to do the the lightsaber noise while waving around a stick... do you hit them and tell them to stop forcing their fandom on you? :whatever:

I'll assume (because of your avatar)that if you and all your XMEN friends went to the Xmen movie and did the same at all the comic references.....that that would be OK though?:woot:

I don't get a lot of that....but if my cousin does that and it gets annoying, I will usually put him in a headlock....:oldrazz:

Haha, I def asked myself "Is this how my friends and I are during X-Men movies?" My friends and I are pretty good at giving each other mental hi-fives; gonna have to get better lol.

The main diff between the 2 groups is that the Trekkies were rejoicing at all the cheesy lines; us comic fans just complain the whole time about how inaccurate everything is

That means Trekkies are happier people then......:woot::grin:

I laughed at the handful that I got. When Scotty said "I'm givin it all she's got, Captain", I chuckled and the theater looked at me like I had 4 heads. I felt so unwanted :( Guess that was too trendy of a reference.

Haha, they've got lower blood pressure. That's for sure :p

Statler and Waldorf. Nobody ever seems to remember their names.

"Who would, when everyone falls asleep during the show?"

OH! HO-HO-HO-HO-HO!

I knew that line would be in there somewhere and I was kind of dreading it, but it worked well in the scene....

Real talk, I am glad that this new movie made it cool to be a Trekkie...well, it's cooler to be more open about being a Trekkie at least.

:o

I don't need a new hit movie to validate my fandoms.

I'll accept the help, though.

Also, what exactly IS wrong with being a Star Trek fan? Why is it such a stigma? How come nobody cares if you talk about comics, videogames, cartoons, anime, or even star wars in comparison. If you like batman, you like superheroes but if you like Star trek, YOU'RE A TREKKIE(SHAME ON YOU! YOU FREAK!).?

My family talked about that at lunch today. My aunt said Trekkies are no different than the rabid sports fans. It's pretty much right on. They have the same passion but for a completely different thing. And since being a sports fan is more acceptable than being a Trek fan, the latter is mocked. The guys who go to fantasy camps aren't any different than the Trekkies who go to convention. Heck, it's probably worse.

I mean, don't get me wrong. I was never ashamed to admit I was a Trekkie, but it sure is snazzy that it is more accepted.

(Geez, this sounds like a civil rights movement or something)

I've never understood why being a rabid sports fan was more acceptable. Sure us sci-fi/fantasy/comic book fans know minute details about fictional characters, but that's only because we read or watch a lot of fiction (which mankind has done since we invented storytelling) and retain a lot of information. Sports fans know so much about any particular athlete, you'd swear they were stalking them.

Knowing that Magneto's real name is Max Eisenhardt is what happens when you remember reading something that happened in a 23-page chapter. When you know whether or not Alex Rodriguez's oldest daughter is playing little league softball, you're trying way too hard. Sports Center doesn't tell you all that.

Sports has just been around a lot longer and just has larger numbers of fans....you don't get 20,000 in a ball park to watch Star Trek: TMP

I have one set of friends that are comic/sci-fi fans that don't understand why Im such a big sports fan and I have other friends that don't get my comics/sci fi fan-ness

Actually, you can get millions of people to pile into movie theatres across the country just to watch a Star Trek movie. Heck, Marvel Comics will cancel a book if it sells a low as 20,000 units.

I get why sports fans are sports fans. I just don't like it when I'm the social pariah just because I like X-Men more than baseball or hockey.

I am a huge Trekkie, have been since I was little. I grew up on the stuff and never really saw it a a stigma in any way. And I was never really made fun of that I can remember. I've been to a few conventions, though I never dressed up or anything. I really enjoyed the movie and like how they laid things out. I love the original, but there's nothing wrong with changing things up to make them more accessible to a larger audience. I've never really understood why people get so upset with remakes or reboots. It's not like the originals aren't going to still be there or are now invalid. If that's all you like, go back and watch those.

I've had and heard more complaints about batfans recently than any other fanbase.

Exactly. But both of your interests are equally valid right?

To me they are....but I don't try to convince my sci fi friends to get into sports or vice versa

funny story I heard from my cousin....he and my uncle(who's a big trek fan) went to the thursday showing....about 30 minutes in two people a few rows down got up in a huff, made a big production about walking out and stormed out....
