The Trump Thread!!!

Matt,

Obama has been a disaster with USA allies.

His administration was caught spying on Germany

Israel, our best ally when push comes to shove aside from the UK is very upset with Obama.

The entire Middle East went south. Obama said no chem or bio weapons, and then does nothing when they are used. Horrible precedent to set.

ISIS is rampant.

The deal with Iran is terrible, no inspection for 20+ days? What is the point of an inspection? Giving Iran billion while at the same time letting them use 5,000 centrifuges that we know about?

Putin is doing what he wants in Eastern Europe.

Many felt Reagan would burn bridges, but he understood you make deals through strength, not we are sorry, here take this type of diplomacy. Billionaires are pragmatic when it comes to making deals. They have to be, but they also know what cards they have to play.

This has nothing to do with Obama. I agree he hasn't done great (though I do think the Iran deal is a good thing. I know conservatives would be much happier with the US destroying Iran entirely and occupying it in perpetuity like the Iraq and Afghanistan, but any path to disarmament is a path to peace), but I'm speaking directly to how Trump handles people he disagree's with. Calling people losers and haters because they disagree is not how a statesman handles himself. I'm also sick and tired of people using their rose tinted glasses to view Reagan's administration as the beacon of human potential. Most of our domestic, and otherwise, issues can be traced back to the troubles of your lord and savior Ronny Reagan.

Reagan gave South American Drug Lords and Dictators Tax Payer money. He gave Iran money and weapons. He gave blanket amnesty to all illegal Immigrants and he let a Communist government inspect US nuclear sites.

Edit:

He also trained and armed Terrorist and Religious extremist in Afghanistan.

Reagan is also responsible for the hugely popular and unbelievably successful War on Drugs.

Ah yes, the war that wiped out all drugs everywhere ever. :o

Well where I live there totally isnt any cocaine, weed, meth, crack, MDMA, pills, or heroine.:o

Yeah here either. Makes you wonder why so many people want to legalize weed when it doesn't exist anymore. :p

I live in Phoenix and you don't hear about any drug troubles down by the border. It's all cleaned up.

Man, Reagan was a miracle worker! ALL HAIL THE RONALD!!!

And there def aren't any studies showing that not only did D.A.R.E. not work but it actually caused kids to do drugs :o

The only people Reagan cared about were his corporate CEO buddies who showered him and Nancy with gifts. He didn't even try to pretend to care about blue collar workers. He was as transparent a corporate shill as has ever sat in the Oval Office.

Reagan gave rise to both the so-called War on Drugs, which was orchestrated to enrich government officials and attack the poor like everything else he did, and the ideology the GOP holds to this day, that if you're poor it's because you're lazy, and money is God. All somehow wrapped up in this weird pseudo-Christianity despite being the exact opposite of what Christ had to say.

The ideology Reagan ushered in, and the way he continues to be held up as the GOP's Messiah, hasn't exactly been helpful to this country.

Not to be the buzzkill, guys, but there is a political history thread where the Reagan talk would be more relevent...

Matt,

The Iran deal was the worst piece of diplomacy in decades.

Who says war? How about they allow 24 x 7 inspections plus USA and UN people on site, or the USA simply destroys all facilities which could be accomplished in perhaps 60 days or less? This gives Iran a choice.

So now its Reagan’s fault??? Matt, he’s been out of power for nearly 30 years! In truth Reagan inherited a mess from Jimmy Carter and righted the ship from an economic and military perspective. And Reagan didn’t need a stimulus package the sized Obama had.

I agree Trump is too brash, but it works form him. I wish he'd tone it down a tad. If something is bad, he doesn’t sugar coat it. Many past politicians use the same language off mike. Trump just does not disguise his speech. As such he’s rather authentic.

Man, Reagan was a miracle worker! ALL HAIL THE RONALD!!!

Reagan had a good Presidency and it held in high regard today.

Among his accomplishments:

1. Ending the Cold War: The Cold War had raged since World War II and communism‘s quest for world domination remained an existential threat to the United States when President Reagan took office. Reagan reversed the policy of detente and stood firm against the Soviet Union, calling it the Evil Empire and telling Mikhail Gorbachev to “tear down this wall” in Berlin. He was relentless in pushing his Strategic Defense Initiative and gave aid to rebels battling Soviet-backed Marxists from Nicaragua to Angola. Those efforts were critical in the ultimate collapse of the Soviet empire and essentially ended the Cold War.

2. Reaganomics: Reagan’s mix of across-the-board tax cuts, deregulation, and domestic spending restraint helped fuel an economic boom that lasted two decades. Reagan inherited a misery index (the sum of the inflation and unemployment rates) of 19.99%, and when he left office it had dropped to 9.72%. President Obama take note: Under Reaganomics, 16 million new jobs were created.

3. Revitalizing the GOP and the conservative movement: The Republican Party was at its nadir after Watergate, but Reagan was able to form a winning coalition of fiscal conservatives, family-values voters, blue-collar Reagan Democrats and neo-conservative intellectuals and set the stage for future GOP electoral gains. His free-market, small-government, pro-liberty conservatism helped to revitalize the GOP and his influence resonates today as conservative candidates still invoke Reagan as their standard-bearer.

4. Peace through Strength: The military was diminished during the Carter years, but Reagan reversed that by rebuilding the armed forces. His Peace Through Strength philosophy was manifested by his reviving the B-1 bomber that Carter canceled, starting production of the MX missile, and pushing NATO to deploy Pershing missiles in West Germany. He increased defense spending by more than 40%, increased troop levels, and even got much-needed space parts into the pipeline. Those efforts ensured that America remained a military superpower.

5. Morning in America: It was basically a slogan for Reagan’s 1984 reelection bid, but Morning in America symbolized a new beginning for the country. Reagan’s jaunty optimism and an economic boom was a much-needed tonic for a country that had experienced the malaise of the Carter years and the traumas of Watergate and Vietnam.

6. Star Wars: Reagan’s Strategic Defense Initiative was derided by his opponents as being technologically unfeasible, but the mere threat of the U.S. building the system was instrumental in the Soviet Union’s collapse. The successful use of Patriot missile batteries in the first Gulf War proved the critics wrong, and the missile defense system that ensued has lessened the threat of ballistic missiles.

7. Nuclear weapons cuts: Even as massive demonstrations were held in Europe against Reagan’s hawkish stance on nuclear arms, the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty he signed with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev eliminated an entire class of nuclear weapons. He also laid the framework with Gorbachev for the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START), which reduced both countries’ arsenals of nuclear weapons.

8. Voiced values: Reagan gave voice to the values that had served America well—thrift, patriotism, and hard work—and often recounted the wisdom of the Founding Fathers. He also championed the causes of the pro-life and family-values movements that sought to counter the societal upheavals of the 1960s and 1970s.

9. Tax reform: Not only did he cut tax rates, but the Tax Reform Act of 1986 simplified the income-tax code by eliminating many tax shelters, reducing the number of deductions and tax brackets. Reagan’s dream of tax returns fitting on a postcard has been nullified as Congress has regressed and continued to make the tax code more complex, necessitating a new push for reform.

10. Taking on PATCO: Early in his administration, members of the federal air traffic controllers union (PATCO) went on strike, violating a federal regulation. Declaring the strike a “peril to national safety,” Reagan gave the workers an ultimatum and ended up firing more than 11,000 of the controllers, sending a strong signal that union workers needn’t be coddled

Obama has been a disaster with USA allies.
The perception is that with the exception of the UK, Obama has been rather neglectful of US allies, but not disastrous.

His administration was caught spying on Germany
We spy on our allies all the time and our allies spy on us. It's the game, even Merkel recognizes that.

Israel, our best ally when push comes to shove aside from the UK is very upset with Obama.
Israel is nothing but a petulant little child that cries whenever they don't get their way 100%. The decline in US/Israel relations is all on Israel's end, not Obama's.

The entire Middle East went south. Obama said no chem or bio weapons, and then does nothing when they are used. Horrible precedent to set.
Obama did try to do something but it all went south when the UK Parliament rejected Cameron's attempts to use some kind of force and it was obvious that Congress was going to do the same to Obama.

ISIS is rampant.
While Obama deserves criticism for his policies towards ISIS, the rise of ISIS is not Obama's fault.

The deal with Iran is terrible, no inspection for 20+ days? What is the point of an inspection? Giving Iran billion while at the same time letting them use 5,000 centrifuges that we know about?
It's actually a rather good deal. People who criticize it really don't know what the hell they're talking about. It has snapback provisions, provisions in place to keep track of what Iran has, and do you honestly think that Iran can hide from US, European, and Israeli intelligence?

Putin is doing what he wants in Eastern Europe.
Again, Obama is limited in what he can do there. Especially when Europe has been very weak kneed in how to respond.

1. Reagan had very little to do with the Soviet Union's collapse. Things like poor economic management on the Soviet's end, getting involved in quagmires like Afghanistan, being far too ethnically diverse, and poor political leadership had far more to do with it than Reagan. Anyone could have been President and the same result would have happened.

2. Reaganomics was great....as long as you weren't black.

3. While Reagan completed the shift of the United States to a center-right nation in the 1980's, he was still building off of Richard Nixon's foundations. What he really should be credited for was merging the Goldwater activism with the Nixonian establishment.

Russia was a country ready to crumble in the 70s, all Reagan did was speed up the process by spending Hundreds of billions of dollars(if not a trillion+). I guess you can call that a win unless you are a fiscal conservative.

Boy that was.....something. Reagan was not a good president. He set up the hyper rich atmosphere that's lead directly to today's economic woes. He was 100% a candidate put in office to help his big business cronies. The only reason he's regarded so highly is because the conservative base has put together this narrative that if you don't criticize Reagan then you're anti-american. This is the Trump thread though so I won't derail it further, but I will say that as bad as Reagan was Trump will be even more disastrous.

I suspect that Reagan might become remembered as one of the worse presidents, given his legacy is unfolding now, and it's pretty bad.

I suspect that Reagan might become remembered as one of the worse presidents, given his legacy is unfolding now, and it's pretty bad.

I think it's somewhat unfair to say he was either one of the best or one of the worse

Next time he thinks of mocking someone's appearance, maybe he should look in the mirror.
