I guess I have to ask the question: how many of you are really going to care about the looks not being all that faithful if the film rocks your socks off?

i suppose i would prefer a better story

That's the thing. If the script, plot, and action are all solid I think the appearances of some characters that bother some people might not be as big a deal.

Would actually having both be that big of a deal? Faithful looking characters and a good story? It's not like we're asking for the impossible here. We're asking for a bald guy with a beard for heaven's sake. What's the whole point of bringing a source material to the big screen if you don't even care about making the actors resemble the characters?

Mutenroshi not being bald and beardless is like having Hugh Jackman clean shaven, without sideburns and crazy hairdo as Wolverine.

I don't disagree but what are we supposed to do? This is what we're getting. I'm trying to work with what we've been given...luckily for me I happen to like most of what I'm seeing.

There is no use whining about it, the film has finished filming, their not gonna magically go back and reshoot these characters to make anyone feel better. Just better to accept it and see the results.

the only reason i can think of roshi not having a beard and being bald is because thats the way he looked in potc3, and they wouldn´t want people to relate him to that or something like that. its a really stupid reason but its the only thing i can come up with

still, i like the way he looks,it would be better if it were like the anime, but its still good

I also think that maybe they had a reluctance to include the bald/white beard look was because it would look like a rip off of Kill Bill Vol 2's Pai Mei (even though it wouldn't actually be a rip off).

I would think the non-Dragonball fans who go to see this movie will be a similar group to those who saw the Kill Bill films. If they aren't familiar with much of the Dragonball lore, then Roshi would look like a Pai Mei rip off.

This probably isn't right but just my own speculation. It's pretty far fetched and I'm not even sure I agree with it anymore. Not much more than an interesting theory of mine.

it could be one of those things
i can´t really find another explanation

I don't see how he'd look anything like a rip-off. Roshi is bald, his beard isn't anywhere near as long as Pai Mei's and he wears big sunglasses.

I'm going with Fox was simply lazy. Chow Yun-Fat doesn't even look really old.

The thing is, he doesn't look old. He's supposed to be an old, dirty man, and the first human to master the kamehameha. Bulletproof monk chow yun fat just doesn't seem like he could be that guy. If this was Jackie Chun, then cool, but if not, I think it's lazy to not even age him a little bit.

they are putting 100 million dollars into the movie
do you honestly think they´d be lazy about anything related to it? i woudn´t
every little change they make from the original source must have a reason

Well I think they chose to omit aspects of this character as well as others, that might look too silly or too typical of the genre.

So we aren't going to see him wearing a turtle shell on his back or huge sun glasses. Like other people said they don't want us to see the martial arts master depicted like they have in other films.

that makes sense

i was actually expecting him to be bald, have a beard but wear a gi instead of his original clothes. they did exactly the opposite i was expecting hehe

this look does make him more unique, unlike what i was expecting which is quite more typical, so i was pleasantly surprised
still having him look exactly like the anime would have been cool too

A comment like that pisses me off. If anyone even knew a fraction of how hard illustrators work on films you'd appreciate films more.

You're basically saying that the hundreds of illustrators who worked on the film, plus the folks in charge of hair and make-up are "lazy"

:down

For the character design of master roshi, sure.

The basic thought process that went into it seems to be:

And considering it's an adaptation, where the design is ALREADY THERE, there's not a whole lot of work that really needed to be done. And considering there are other movies where the same actor looks a lot more like the source material, I'd say that's pretty darn lazy.

You're saying lazy as if shaving his head would have taken work. Considering how easy that is to do, there is obviously a reason for him not to be bald or have a beard.

And honestly.. if that reason is so that Roshi doesn't look like your stereotypical old asian mentor, then thats a damn good reason. IMO anyways.

It would have taken more work than tossing on a hawaiian shirt. And why would they not do it, simply because it's easy? And considering the fact that he trained grandpa gohan, why does Randall Duk kim look so much older? It's inconsistent and stupid, not creative, because he no longer fits a a physical archetype of the wise old man that the original character is SUPPOSED to be. there's not a single good reason as to why he looks so young and why there's not really any changes in appearance from Chow Yun Fat. They're simply changing him to make him appeal more to a modern audience and because it seems much easier(though I personally enjoy the original much more).

In my opinion, FOX probably would think a 300 year old pervert was over the top and freaky as hell, so they made him younger with no beard and kept his "perverted-ness" He'll probably will wear sunglasses for a long period of the film. OR My other theory is that that is the movie version of Jackie Chun.

Well then Adam's excuse isn't the reason...See my above theories. (#171 post)
