Twitter's a complete waste of time. A few people here have actually tried defending it.

Given the reality, it's actually quite easy to defend. Twitter's use in Iran validated it's importance. It's also been very useful in sending out sports information quicker than ever.

Twitter is only good in your in the entertainment business to pimp your stuff.

That is another valid use of the medium.

The "scientific" research could easily be applied to the internet as well. Except 40% babble would be 40% porn.

What if scenario's are interesting, but you can't really use it in a proper discussion.

The reality is that Twitter was found by those in Iran (whose ability to communicate with the outside world was actively oppressed by the Iranian government) found an outlet to the outside world in Twitter that was effective and VITAL to the reporting of the Iranian protests.

That action, compared with it's use to report Breaking Sports news, entertainment news, etc. makes Twitter a valid and important information medium. No matter how others may use it.

Twitter isn't a "privilege", it's a product. No one forces you to follow celebrities that make irrelevant tweets, but it's hard to deny there is a major market for such information - all you have to do is look at the popularity of MTV and VH1 with it's "celebrity" reality shows and tabloids. People are interested with celebrities, and this is the closest they came to hanging out with them.

The beauty of Twitter is that you pick exactly what you get. Teenage girls can be satisfied by Kutcher and Cyrus's antics, sports fans can get Adam Schefter's latest tidbits of news and those that care about the news can follow news agencies, news makers and the like.

No one forces you to follow celebrities that make irrelevant tweets, but it's hard to deny there is a major market for such information - all you have to do is look at the popularity of MTV and VH1 with it's "celebrity" reality shows and tabloids. Okay, one valid use of Twitter is what happened in Iran. Everything else is pointless drivel and yes I'm including Breaking Sports news in that because there's plenty of other sources for Sports news that are just as accessible.

Define necessary and unnecessary. Is twitter and less necessary than movies? Or video games? Or TV? Comic Books?

This arrogant view that people that use Twitter are somehow beneath people who are "above" such a medium is obviously absurd. I mean don't comic book fans dislike it when condescending *****bags mock them for that interest? Perhaps this is actually where much of this hate comes from. Comic Book fans (making up a good percentage of the demographic of this forum I guess) now see an avenue where they can turn the tables on the "popular" kids that today enjoy Twitter.

Yeah, I would say it's more unnecessary than those forms of media. A TV show actually has a written, drawn out story. Far more creative and intellectually stimulating than a 180-character (or less! ) blurb like "@ the mall w/ gina til 4 then going 2 dinner."

And the majority of Twitter has real substance? I can go on ESPN and within a minute find the story I'm looking for. Plus I'll probably be able to understand the story better because the author wasn't limited to 180 characters.

I disagree. This is a negative medium that works contrary to the evolution of our language and our culture. It is in effect, making us as a society dumber than ****.

It teaches and promotes microblogging and micromedia. Continually shortening down our language and substance of what we are into something horrible and stupid. Twitter is a misuse of English.

Also I'm not nearly cool enough to have a Twitter and that makes me sad.
