Ultimate Spider-man was the comic book that got me INTO comic books. I've read the first 100 or so issues plenty of times, but now...
I logged on for the first time in months to say I am disgusted with the state of the series. I was that superfan who gave Bendis the benefit of the doubt even in moments many called the series' darkest, like the Carnage arc, but I just couldn't follow anymore after Ultimatum. I tried, I really tried.
I think it hit me when the Hood (Kitty or whoever) gave a word-for-word speech identical to the one Peter gave after Gwen died in one of the first relaunch comics. Recycled art is one thing, but dialogue? Who's editing this book?
The art, I could have lived with. I detest most anime, but in comics, the art is ultimately just a vehicle for the story and Lafuente wasn't THAT awful. Just another irritant, in my mind.
But the real breaking point was when Aunt May took in Iceman. Johnny Storm, maybe. But in the first issues, we knew that Aunt May was struggling to keep afloat financially even with Ben's income. Now you're telling me she can support four kids? What? And yeah, sure, people are a little suspicious, but you'd think that'd raise more of an alarm to the neighbors or something. I just couldn't swallow it. It was too contrived.
Yeah, sure, Mysterio and Chameleon were good interpretations. But they're a few nuggets of corn in a whole lot of turd.
NOW we have the Death of Ultimate Spider-man. Or should I say, the Second Death of Spider-man.
Because Bendis effectively promised that if he hadn't died in Ultimatum (and I could've lived with that), there "might even be a new Spider-man!" Remember that? You could say I was at least a little confused when Issue 1 of the relaunch hit and Spidey was still wearing the webs.
You know, even if he dies now, the premise loses its gravity for me, or any appeal. It's a cheap gimmick. Everyone already mourned him as dead. OH, but this time, he's REALLY dead. NOTHING WILL BE THE SAME. "Nothing will be the same" is the tagline for every issue of every comic Marvel puts out lately, especially the Spider-man ones. Shouldn't that be the point of a story in the first place?
Stories need a beginning, middle, and end. Even comics. Ultimate Spider-man had an incredibly strong, resonant beginning. I didn't expect an end anytime soon. But once characters start inexplicably spouting speeches said 80 issues ago by completely different characters in different circumstances, in a book with fewer issues than 99% of the comics out there, you've lost me. If the writers don't care about continuity or progression, why should we?
...my apologies to the fans out there. Just venting some steam. Maybe I'll come back when I have the money to someday. I don't know. I just wonder if anyone sees it this way, too.
