Following the path of his mentor, and perhaps the only decent fellow he knew within his short time among the rankings of the Green Lantern Corps, Hal braced himself for the journey ahead as a recognisable sphere of a planet became visible, just beyond the horizon. Sur turned, and signaled Hal to speed up his charge, after doing a routine scan of the atmosphere ahead. Hal nodded, and mentally shot a command to the power ring on his fist.
Ring, designate speed at maximum. Keep locked on Lantern 2814's.
The ring glowed brightly, in compliance, before Hal was sent flying forward along with his mentor, shooting straight for the atmosphere of planet Earth. Abin Sur flew over, as they hit the snow white clouds, trailing close to Hal as he became both visibly joyed, and discomforted at seeing his own planet again.
"Your experience in once living among this race may prove useful on this mission, Hal Jordan,", Sur began.
"Perhaps it is best if you enlighten me of any vital information now, before we must locate the distress signal."
Hal shrugged.
"There's really nothing much to say about it, Abin.", Hal responded.
"It's a planet like any other. Except about a thousand years backwards, in terms in races and technology."
Sur raised an eyebrow.
"I am... unsure if I understand."
Hal smirked.
"You'll see in time, big guy.", Hal remarked, before the two finally broke through the clouds, and began to fly over a mighty sea.
Looking down, Hal smiled, watching a whale as it loomed just below the surface of the waves. He had always done that, back in his Air Force days. There was just something about even the most simple Earth based elements that had always piqued his eye. Or, rather... Earth's beauty. And Hal's smirk started to grow wider, as he thought of...
other beautiful creatures that Earth had to offer. It's women. And holy god, had he missed that part of Earth life.
"The rings have located the origin of the distress signal,", Sur stated, interrupting Hal's train of thought.
"Let us focus on the mission at hand, before there is not a distress left to answer."
Hal nodded.
"Right. Sure thing.", Hal responded, looking away.
Killjoy.
Looping over the break of water as they approached land, the two Lanterns rose into the skies, as they found themselves above a set of trees. A forest, of some kind. Both Abin and Hal's eyes wandered ahead, as something rather disturbing caught their attention: There were some trees knocked over, creating a domino path that led straight to where the signal's origin was coming from. And though they couldn't see the actual distress... they could see the rising smoke.
Hal raced forward, past his mentor, as he was determined to get to the bottom of this. While Abin could remain calm and collected during a situation of immenent crsis, Hal didn't share the same luxury. He was impatient, brash... perhaps even submissive, as he had never displayed any sort of humanry fear. Abin sighed to himself, as he watched Hal impatiently go ahead of him. At least his willpower was strong. After all, that's what made Hal Jordan worthy of consideration by The Guardians...
Flying up to the smoke, Hal lifted his ring, and shot out a concentrated blast of green energy. The energy continued forth, into the blackening smoke that was covering the scene below. With emphasis of his own imagination, Hal closed his eyes, as the energy began to take a bizarre shape. Suddenly, there appeared a giant, glowing emerald fan, which immediately began twirling and blowing away the smoke. But the sight of which lied beneath the cloud of it left Hal with widened eyes, as Abin shot past him, and descended on the scene.
"Holy god...", He whispered to himself, gritting his teeth.
A massive, interplanetary ship lied on the ground, crashed into the dirt of the forest's trail as if it were an anchor on an ocean floor. And it lied in complete, nearly devastating ruins. Hal landed, as Abin stepped forward and kneeled down. Shooting some energy out of his ring, as he scanned the area, Abin stopped, and turned back.
"There is a faint trail of blood, leading into the forest.", Abin announced.
"Whichever Lantern was piloting this is not inside."
"So that just leaves the obvious question...", Hal began, not able to keep his eyes off of the extensive damage to the ship.
"Where's the poor guy now?"
"She, recruit..."
Hal and Abin turned, slightly startled, as a crimson skinned woman limped out of the woods, holding her midsection, in obvious pain.
"...is right here.", She stated, with a grunt.
"Katma Tui!", Abin exclaimed, rushing forward to aide her.
"You are wounded. Are you gravely injured?"
"Could be better, Abin...", She responded, wincing in pain as Abin threw her arm around his neck, before looking at Hal.
"Who's the rookie?"
Hal extended his hand, unsure of what else to do.
"Hal Jordan, m'aam.", He stated, with a weak grin.
"..."
"You'll forgive me if I don't return the formality.", She responded, acknowledging her other arm that was plugging her wound.
Hal frowned, a little embarassed, withdrawing his hand as the three headed back towards the ship. Stretching out his free hand, Abin shot another blast of energy forward, which created a makeshift cushioned medical table. Helping her over, Abin gently lifted her, and laid her across it.
"Do not be quick to move,", Abin warned.
"I will perform a scan of your condition. Hal Jordan... I require your aid in subduing the fire to the ship."
Hal nodded, before leaping up, his ring's aura spreading across his body, and taking off into the sky. Katma Tui watched him, weakly, before looking over at Abin.
"A little on the lopsided, isn't he?", She asked.
Abin smiled.
"Perhaps. But nevertheless... he is my finest student yet."
"As long as you trust him, Abin...", She replied, sitting straight as Abin shot forward a ray that scanned her body.
"Personally, I'm yet to be impressed."
Hal flew over a nearby river, quickly acting and persuing Abin's command. Shooting a slightly larger blast of energy, Hal used every bit of his strength and imagination to form the structure beneath the water. Lifting it, Hal looked down, as a large pale slowly rised from the river's bed, filled with enough water to take care of the fire. Turning, Hal began to fly back, as he basked in his triumph of getting a proper control of his ring.
Kid's stuff.
But his self attained glory was interrupted, with a loud rumble that errupted within the forest. Hal stopped, mid-air, and turned, eyebrow raised in response.
"What in holy hell's name was..."
And then, all too sudden, it emerged, forcing Hal to retract the pale of water, as he stared up at the towering being infront of him.
"...that..."
