What's important about the Mario games is that they're fun. The lowest point in the Mario franchise (outside of sports and handhelds) was Mario Sunshine, and it wasn't that bad.

I haven't owned a Nintendo console since the NES, so I've skipped the vast majority of them. I do, however, love the Super Smash Bros. franchise. Although that too follows the model of basically recreating the same game over and over with minor tweaks.

Super Smash Bros. is a lot like Nintendo's Street Fighter. You play the sequels for the tweaks and the new characters. The latest Smash Bros game added a 2D platforming story mode, which was just about the most awesome idea ever.

I loves the Mario games. Super Mario was one of the earliest games I ever played along with Sonic & Knuckles. Fighting evil turtles, rescuing princesses and battling robots was how I spent the early years of my life
