Far From Home The Uncle Ben Problem

I wouldn't have a problem with no Uncle Ben if it wasn't so Tony centric. He can mourn Tony 8 months later, but not Ben?

Would a line like "I already lost Ben and then I lose Tony too?" been so bad? It could have easily been dropped in there during the heart to heart with Happy.

To be fair, Peter in FFH mourned Tony because other people kept talking about him and Tony's glasses were relevant.

I agree, that heart to heart would have been a perfect place to mention Ben.

Uncle Ben was mentioned in each of the Raimi Spider-Man films and then we see it again in the Marc Webb movies. I honestly don’t have a problem with them not mentioning him in the MCU. It’s been done so many times...just like when they keep showing Batman’s parents getting killed in each of the versions.

Which is exactly why he isn't mentioned

I've seen all the points on both sides, but as others said, there's a world of difference between mentioning him every second and a small, heartfelt acknowledgement .

He didn't just lose Ben, in his eyes he caused him to die do to inaction. So everytime he goes out to swing, fresh on his mind.

Heck, I wouldn't even mind a scene akin to the PS4 game where he sees a photo, picks it up with a sad smile and says "miss you".

If you want to keep the MCU Ben's identity a mystery, there's still ways to do the above scene without showing his face.

I'm disappointed, but can't do anything at this point.

Didn’t he hint at it in Civil War when he was talking to Tony about why he’s Spider-Man?

I started reading the Spider-Man comics in the early 60's. Read them up to the late 80's (circumstances caused me to give up all comics for many years).....occasionally still read some back issues. I'm sure my memory isn't perfect....but as far as I remember....Uncle Ben was NOT the main focus of every single issue of the series. He is mentioned now and then....he is credited with helping to form Peter's personality....but the books do not constantly talk about him. When I was younger....I expected a movie or TV adaptation of a comic book to be exact and perfect. Now I just hope they give it a good try to be similar. I accept that there will be differences. It doesn't mean I won't be disappointed in some things....but I don't lose sleep over them.
In fact, Spider-Man's guilt over other people absolutely replaced his guild over Uncle Ben for a while. Captain Stacy and Gwen Stacy are good examples.

If this were a comic, we'd have the Amazing Fantasy origin, guilt of death of Uncle Ben and then, after the death of Tony Stark, it would switch to guilt over his death.

So this is what Jon Watts said this about Ben’s role or lack thereoff in the MCU, and interview got a little...shall we say interesting.
We never specifically say anything about him. So whether or not he’s around or not,"

And when asked in response could this mean Ben could potentially still be alive, this is Jon’s answer.

"Yeah. Everything’s on the table, is how I like to say it.

Maybe Ben is still alive in the MCU somewhere and he’s actually a movie critic who’s often away from Aunt May & Peter. Maybe that’s why Peter seems so knowledgeable about those really old movies because Ben made him watch those movies when he was younger.:o

So first it was like "The death of Uncle Ben is important but let's focus on the FUN of being Spider-Man."

And now it's like "You know what...Uncle Ben might be alive."

Ben is barely mentioned in that game, and Doctor Octavius is his mentor (much in the way Stark is to Holland's Peter), but never once is there a feeling that his death doesn't have an affect on Peter's actions or thoughts.

I don't think Feige would allow Watts to make a "Ben is still alive" storyline. So you can all calm down on that one.

Maybe he left May for someone else and left Peter in her care. So they never talk about him because he's a sore spot.

I think it’s hard to do uncle Ben now because I feel like we’ve run out of Peter pining for every dilf out there. Time for him to grow out of it.

Maybe as an intro sequence. No idea who could play him though

I... Don't know what to make of this. What does "lining for every dilf out there" mean?

I wonder. If they do a flashback, would they CGI deage Tom Holland?

Sorry about that, typo. My iPads fault. It’s appauling. It’s meant to be “pining for every dilf”

Ah, you meant looking for validation and mentorship from adults that impress him. Gotcha.

Might as well. You know, to be “different” and “nothing that we’ve seen before”

You can think the Amazing spider-man man movies for that

1.They showed uncle ben's death again
2.Peter getting bit by a spider again
3.Peter befriending harry again and he later becomes his worse enemy again
4.Perter girl friend getting captured by the goblin again

The failure and legacy of those movies lead to MCU wanting in take spider-man in a radially different direction than anything that had come before

kevin feige new vision for the franchise was clear ( new villains and new story-lines)
and if they have to use old characters they either updated them or reinvention them to the point that they might as well be new characters

The first reboot tried to show Uncle ben and the classic story some love but they were rewarded with disappointing box office numbers and fans who attacked them for recycling plots that Sam Raimi had already did way better back in 2002

kevin feige was not going to repeat their mistake

Which is tragic in a way, since there's nothing intrinsically wrong with redoing some of those story beats. They just didn't work with audiences in the TASM movies, because the movies themselves were bad. Thus, not only did they produce crappy movies, but they helped poison the water for future movies.

Anyway who wants to complain about the MCU reboot not doing certain plot beats? Need look no further than Sony and their ill-conceived TASM reboot for who to blame.

I don't mind the sort of "subtle nods" thing they're doing, but I don't recall any with May. That's a missed opportunity.
