understatement of the millennium from Corp....I imagine him in a theater, tears welling up in his eyes, pants around his ankles, clutching that Thor Mighty Mugg, whilst a chorus of angels hum in the background

I read that as "tears welling up in his pants" and I was afraid to read anymore...

Haha, not quite. Frankly, they changed too much about the story for me to have a truly religious experience seeing it in movie form, but it was great in its own right. I especially love that they captured the family stuff at the heart of the conflict in the movie. Thor's always been, at heart, about a father and two sons and the complex, confusing, contradictory relationships between them.

Biggest problems/most pleasant surprises as a Thor fan?

Just curious, my earlier comments were made on it in here were just in terms of it as a general film. Curious as to how a Thor fan saw it... without wading through the issues that you get in the individual character forums.

and by that, you mean the constant whining and overblowing of any shortcoming that offends their delicate fanboy sensibilities ?

Yes, and without the ridiculous over the top praise that it's the greatest film ever created as the Bat boards so emphatically demonstrate in the other direction.

A tempered appraisal from a fan perspective. That's what I'm looking for.

I mean, in all honesty, I proably know more about Norse lore and mythology in general than I do bout the Marvel version of Asgard and Thor related characters.

Most pleasant surprise for me was Thor flying across the Rainbow Bridge behind Mjolnir. That's one of those "ripped from the pages" shots that just sets fanboy hearts aflutter, and there was some concern before the movie was released whether Thor would fly at all. Another one was Thor spinning the hammer so much. Again, I was thinking they might have left that out because it'd be so hard to do in live-action, but Mjolnir was a-spinning all over. I especially liked the shot where he uses the spinning Mjolnir to knock chunks of the ground up into the frost giants' faces in Jotunheim.

Biggest disappointment was Loki only finding out he's a frost giant later in life. So much fantastic material has come from everyone knowing Loki was a frost giant and treating him like utter s***, which is largely responsible for why Loki is such a jerk as an adult. I would've loved to see Thor and Loki have some more camaraderie growing up, too. Thor was basically the only person who treated Loki well as a child, which makes Loki's constant lashing out against Thor later in life so much more tragic and sad. Really, I just wish they could've gone more into the complexity of the relationships between everyone.

But I do understand the limits of a 2-hour movie, so I don't really blame Branagh and the writers for not trying to go deeper. Frankly, what they did manage to get of the relationship between Thor, Loki, and Odin, at least, was pretty good.

They even got a thread complaining about how much screentime Thor's helmet got

eh....I'm not a huge fan of the helmet...maybe for fighting but you gotta let the glorious blonde mane flow

Yeah you make a good point about only so much can be shown in one movie.
Some fanboys expect 50 years of comic book history in one movie

Nah, that's just ridiculous, especially since, as I said, a lot of the underlying relationship stuff comes from way back when Loki, Thor, Balder, Sif, et al. were children. The movie clearly couldn't have hoped to cover these people's entire lives and deliver a big action movie and show us how Thor gets to Earth and have the romance subplot and tie it all into SHIELD and the Avengers. You'd need like 4 or 5 hours and the most patient audience in the universe for that.

But it probably will piss me off if the upcoming animated Thor: Tales of Asgard movie doesn't cover some of that. I mean, it's a movie about Thor as a teenager, so it's kind of the perfect venue for exploring those earlier relationships.

Was I the only person who was reminded of
Ghost Rider
with the appearance of the Frost Giants? That didn't bother anybody else at all?

I don't know... Maybe I was just hoping for more classical, bearded immense frost giants.

I loved Hiddlesons Loki. He played it as well as Heath Ledger played the Joker

The frost giants were very blue. I kind of liked the ice powers, though. I sometimes feel like the members of all the godly realms aren't quite special enough in Marvel's version. For the longest time, Thor was basically the only god with major powers. Sif could teleport at will, but that was forgotten pretty quickly. Balder could generate light and heat from his body, but that was forgotten after Simonson's run. Heimdall's powers (before JMS revamped them into a form of magical/cosmic awareness) were basically just like Daredevil's. Odin and Loki's only real powers came from learning magic, like Dr. Strange or any number of other normal humans could do. They just seemed plain, like a race of people who just happened to have some super-strength and could build really pretty buildings. The giants, meanwhile, were literally just huge people with wooden clubs and other s***ty weapons. So I thought the ice-powered frost giants of the movie were actually pretty cool. Honestly, giving them the Casket of Ancient Winters made a lot more sense to me than having Malekith and the dark elves use it, too. They are frost giants, after all.

I think they were trying to show that contempt for Loki with the snide little comments about his silvery tongue when they all went to Ymir.

I could see with Marvel making adjustments to try and make the movie version seem more "official" and having the others condescend because the others respect brute force and adventure more than cunning and manipulation, rather than his ancestry per se in that as well if the movie does well enough.

I mean box office was at 100 million bucks before it even hit American shores... We saw the Iron Man movie kind of change future interpretations of the character somewhat (automated Jarvis rather than actual human for example).

Yeah, I don't mind it too much. Like I said, they did a good job with the time they had of fleshing out the relationships as well as they could. They got Volstagg's love of eating, Fandral's flamboyant theatrics in battle, Hogun's stoicism, etc. They did have a few comments about how Loki likes to talk/lie his way out of things, too. So I was happy to see them slip what they could in around the edges.

I like AI Jarvis....it feels like something Tony would have built

I liked it when it was called HOMER and Jarvis was still around with his wizened old English butlerness. But I don't mind that change much, either. I've accepted that the movies are necessarily going to have to change a lot of things. They've still managed to capture the spirit of the characters, though. At the end of the day, whether Jarvis is a dude or a program doesn't really affect Iron Man as a character.

Kick Ass just hit Watch Instant....decent flick, but I can't help thinking that Dave is how all those that work in the industry see the fans

So if they do a Siege adaptation I guess that means instead of Jarvis getting his ass kicked they'll just give him a computer virus. :o

Well a human Jarvis would of come across as a poor mans Alfred and Tony is a forward thinking guy so having an English Butler would be a bit dated. Even the Arthur remake got rid of the butler role.

I'm sure most modern Millionaires/Billionaires have personal assistants and housekeepers which do the same jobs butlers did.

would of been nice to see Hoguns 70s porno tache

I :hrt: it. The acting in the movie was fab and Loki was perfect in this movie. I loved his interactions with Thor and Odin

And i loved the designs of the Frost Giants in this movie. They were cool

Also Natalie Portman. I loves Natalie Portman even when she is playing Jane Foster
