The Wachowskis Returning to Sci-Fi with Jupiter Ascending - Part 1

Some of you have spent weeks on here, full of enthusiasm and trepidation for this movie to fail.

It's bizarre and irrational.

Are you done crying yet?

Heh. Go to the Fantastic Four forums and you will know what wishing for a film to fail truly means.

Those MCU fanboys are vicious.

Without us this thread would practicially be dead. It's not like we are discussing a dislike of a successful franchise here. We are talking about a box office flop that garnered a 22% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. I don't see people getting up in arms when people rag on M night Shyamalan's latest poorly reviewed flop, why should the Wachowskis be treated any differently?

You need to read my essay on the artistry of "The Happening", the trailblazing nature of "The Last Airbender", and how "After Earth" will go on to inspire dozens of filmmakers. :o

Some people are in dire need of attention and just hang out and comment in threads that are controversial…it's pretty obvious.:whatever:

Funny you should mention M. Night Shyamalan.

His recent work may be a bit muddled (reports of studio interference abound) but he is one of the most cinematic directors working in mainstream Hollywood.

He's currently in post-production on a small domestic drama called The Visit for $5 million. It's set for release on September 11th.

I'm looking forward to it.

As opposed to... non-cinematic directors? If your movie is **** it's ****, regardless of how cinematic it is.

Yes.

I agree. And Shyamalan's recent output has been questionable, although not without merit.

My point is that – as a director – he's one of the best that Hollywood has to offer.

A good script is all he needs to get back on track, and I hope The Visit does just that.

It seems some don't like certain criticism, oh well...

Yep, those movies "achieved what they were trying to accomplish", so they also deserve a 9/10.

:o

;)

When you say recent work, you mean everything after "The Village" right? Because that was the last of his movies that was bearable imo.

As someone who loves TLA series, his film is a crime against all good things. I never bothered with "After Earth", but that was because "The Happening" was so awful, and "Lady in the Water" did little for me, outside of of Miss Howard. But TLA was beyond awful. One of the worst adaptations I have seen, and I have seen "Elektra". He wouldn't even let the characters go by their correct names, including Aang. Talk about arrogance and not getting it.

Lucky you. I sat through After Earth, it is one of the most dull things I have ever seen.

M. Night and the Smiths? Yeah, no thank you. I like myself a little bit better then that.

Oh Jesus, no. I could easily name 30 current directors better then him off the top of my head. And that is before I get to television. Because GoT, Breaking Bad, Justified, Penny Dreadful, etc. have plenty of higher quality directors. M. Night couldn't pace to save his life.

Yes.

There are many, many, many better than Shyamalan.

I didn't even remember that M night Shyamalan had a film coming out, I thought he had been tossed in movie jail after After Earth happened.

Isn't that what low budget is for a guy like M. Night?

More or less.

Like you, I never bothered with After Earth; I got the feeling Shyamalan was just Will Smith's gun-for-hire.

Unlike you, I never watched The Last Airbender series. I found the film adaptation to be intermittently interesting, but somewhat slack in its narrative tension.

Lady in The Water was engaging in its low-key approach, and I remember being struck by certain images (e.g. the demonic dog). I also remember feeling somewhat ambiguous towards the resolution of the film, and I've actually wanted to revisit the movie to see how I like it a second time.

The Happening is the closest thing I've seen to a complete disaster. And yet, the film's last reel (i.e. the old woman in the house) ranks among Shyamalan's best work in what is arguably his worst film.

On a more positive note, you can call The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs and The Village modern masterpieces, and I won't bat an eyelid.

I don't know what's going on behind the scenes of Shyamalan's films, but I've heard a lot of reports and rumours about studio meddling and the like. Hopefully, The Visit will prove that to be true, and maybe we can get another big budget Shyamalan blockbuster that actually delivers on all the promise he has as one of Hollywood's best talents.

Because their movies are "divisive".

There's nothing embarrassing about directing a low budget movie.

That's a super low budget for him, embarrassingly so actually. But it's a smart move because the movie almost can't fail with a budget that low.
I would put nothing pass M. Night at this point. :hehe:

There is when it is force upon you imo. M. Night, like the Wachowskis doesn't want to do this kind of fair. Though it might be best for both. Maybe they can get their groove back, Stella style.
