The Wachowskis Returning to Sci-Fi with Jupiter Ascending

Oh studios and their lies. They had Mila Kunis promoting the film on Ellen. The movie is probably tracking and testing horribly so they decided to move it out of the summer so they don't have The Lone Ranger of 2014.

I refuse to believe the studios would lie, surely not?

A whole lot of people lasciviously anticipating Guardians of the Galaxy are pooping on Jupiter Ascending.

Ah, the power of brands.

I don't think it's so much branding as it is the approach. GOTG works, or at least looks like it will work, because it's got a very comedic tone to back up some of it's ridiculous aspects. This looks to be very straight-faced.

I'm not looking forward to Guardians of the Galaxy. I might see it if I'm bored but it looks a little too try-hard for my taste. I don't love everything Marvel does unlike a lot of Hype. And I am not saying that makes me better because it doesn't.

I'm better for other reasons.

There is nothing wrong with scifi that takes itself seriously.

I didn't say there was. But in the case of sci-fi that's got talking raccoons and trees or, in this case, a futuristic elf warrior, being too straight-faced about it all can hurt more than it can help.

GOTG has the right idea. This film, probably not.

I'm all for gritty, serious sci-fi, but when you have Channing Tatum with bleach-blonde hair and elf ears in your movie, it helps to at least indicate you have a sense of humor.

Why would WB/Roadshow wait this long to push Jupiter Ascending to February? I don't buy the "we need more time on the VFX" excuse, that hasn't stopped studios from subcontracting effects work to other houses to finish movies on time.

I do see the studio moving the film because this summer isn't looking well for them, and like that THR article mentioned, the studio wants to minimize its losses for this year. I don't think JA will be a breakout hit, a la The Lego Movie, but it doesn't hurt to try an off-peak season for something as silly-looking as this pic.
