The Wachowskis Returning to Sci-Fi with Jupiter Ascending

nope. the W siblings need a movie to make money. Cloud Atlas and Speed Racer were huge bombs.

Jupiter Ascending is them trying to make a movie by the numbers. of course it failed when they decided to writte a story that is so weird hahahaha.

after two movies bombed they decided to have an ex-military hunter who has both human and wolf DNA. and he is albino. thats how you do it. :woot::up:
So even their normal movies are weird? I'd admire that if I actually liked more than one of their films.

Marketing JA as a straight generic sci fi action film here in the states is the wrong way to go, WB should head for the female demo big time.

So if this tanks, who will take the blame?

Tatum can't opening big budget films?

Mila Kunis isn't a lead actress?

The W's don't have that magic anymore?

All 3 honestly. I can't see any of them coming out clean from this

There was a clear design progression in Pacific Rim imo. The Russian model, the oldest one, didnt even have a traditional head and you can tell it was designed without form in mind. It also had some definite wear and tear. Whereas the later models became more visually refined and "slick". And Gypsy had a nuclear reactor in its chest. Something newer models lacked. And remember that the jagers (mechs) were only like 8 years old at the time of the film. Even the oldest ones wouldnt be rust bucket if they were regularly maintained which they seemed to be. Steel doesnt degrade and break down that quick.

I really couldn't tell anything based on the visuals. I mean they tell you that Gypsy is analog but that doesn't actually mean anything except in the storytelling.

The visual of a duo cockpit was no different.

I guess I see something like Trek and you get a distinct sense of what a ship was designed for even from the same era.

I think the W-siblings will take the vast majority of the blame because they are on thin ice after the box office and critical failure of Speed Racer and Cloud Atlas. It's going to be super hard to get their next big sci fi film funded if JA doesn't do at least as good as Edge of Tomorrow did worldwide.

I think Tatum will mostly be fine (especially if he gets awards attention for Foxcatcher)because he has the Jump Street franchise and hit films like The Vow and Magic Mike on his record. The problem is as you mention that he hasn't proven that he can lead a successful big budget action film. White House Down was a flop last year and a blow to him getting in that game and JA disappointing will be yet another blow. I'm sure he and Hollywood will keep trying though if this film does tank because he's so popular in other genres.

Well yeah I suppose Kunis leading lady bonafides will be questioned but does anybody seriously believe that Kunis is leading lady material? I know she's getting her chance with this film but I don't think that most believe that she is one. This casting feels like the siblings 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th choices turned them down.

what kind of magic? they only have two BO hits.

they are popular and talented directors in the fanboy community.. general public only likes their first two matrix movies.

Kunis and Tatum were cast before White House Down and Oz the Great and Powerful bombed. in some crazy way hollywood thought that they will make money with Kunis's start power after Oz the Great and Powerful Oz makes Alice in Wonderland money and use her name to boost up JA.

stupid hollywood. they make movies for money? i get it. they are about a business and not art? hey i get it. so why are they acting like idiots? this is not how good business people work.

Just saw the new trailer, it looks better, but something about it just looks....off, I cant put my finger on it. I like the Wachowski's so I hope its good, but I wont be at all shocked if it bombs miserably.

Oz wasn't a bomb but it was a slight disappointment because of it's low international take.

I like Kunis in the right role (she's hella sassy and charming in comedies) but can she lead something like this? I doubt it but I'll give her a chance of course. I don't think she's going to be horrible or anything but she's reading bland in the trailers.

Kunis is best at comedies like Ted and I liked her in Black Swan.

I know we got a different result and she might have not fit the final product, but I thought that she wouldve made a good Lois Lane in a Superman movie.
But, I dont think Jupiter Ascending is the role for her.

On another note: I actually like Tatum in White House Down it's just that the movie itself sucked

The hate this movie gets is a bit unwarranted imo that last trailer was pretty cool. It'll bomb for sure though but the movie itself will probably be kinda decent

Maybe Warner Brothers are just marketing a weird movie in the most generic and, what they see as, audience friendly way possible?

You might be right ISS. The W. bros seem to have strange/quirky written into their DNA and by the numbers might not be in their wheelhouse. The premise is straight up, over the top fantasy sci fi, so there might be some wrinkles not clearly seen in the two trailers. Still... what was seen isn't blowing up my skirt, and Tatum and Kunis just aren't in a genre that suits them well, or at least one which they approach with the same game they bring to other types of films. I'll be surprised if they manage to exceed my expectations of both story and performance. But, I've been WAY wrong in the past so, what do I know?

I think this looks great but the Wachowkis's are my favorite film makers. I just love that WB keeps giving them money even though their movies bomb. I do want to see them make a small movie like BOUND again. Bound is so good.
1) BOUND
2) THE MATRIX
3) CLOUD ATLAS
4) SPEED RACER
5) RELOADED
6) REVOLUTIONS
I still enjoy aspects of Reloaded and Revolutions and respect that they were ambitious.

Yeah for all we know the trailers just aren't doing a good movie justice.

I would be excited if Tatum and Kunis co-starred in a comedy, a sci fi adventure on the other hand? Eh I'll be waiting for reviews. Their casting is just throwing me off big time. To be fair if the trailers were great I don't think most people would continue to be so blah about their presence in this film.

Okay I just saw the new trailer.

I expect... no, I DEMAND that the Dialogue Nazis of the Internet to hop all over that "I like dogs" exchange. Come on, you know you want to. After suffering through a year of "OMFG DAVID GOYER IS THE ANTICHRIST AND RAPED MY CHILDHOOD BECAUSE OF THAT 'HE'S KINDA HOT' LINE" I need to see someone of you guys rip this cringeworthy bit of dialogue to shreds. Because this is actually one of those times where I liked what I was seeing in the trailer and then those few brief lines happened, and it literally killed it for me. All I could do was laugh at it at that point. So this movie needs to be shaved, sterilized, and destroyed.

Come on. You know you want to. Don't let me down.

In what comes to me as a genuine shock, MPAA gives Jupiter Ascending a PG-13 for "some violence, sequences of sci-fi action, some suggestive content, and partial nudity".

I was sure they were going for an R.

Bit of an older post, but at one point in time I think they were set to do a film that was said to be a lower budget film. It was like a futuristic war film that focused on two gay soldiers. I don't recall exactly what happened to that, guess that passed it over to do this instead, or put it on the back burner.

Cobalt Neural 9

you have to respect the Wachowskis thinking there is 1% chance that someone in hollywood would greenlight that movie. :woot:

This is the Wachowski's first PG-13. Even though The Matrix films feel like PG-13 to me.

There was no way WB greenlit such an expensive R rated film. I'm not surprised by the rating.

Yeah. The Matrix sequels got away with it because of the success of the first film. Success the Wachowskis haven't found in a while.
