The Walking Dead to show airline zombie attack in stand-alone special
Exclusive: Mysterious new character to be introduced via stand-alone content
BY JAMES HIBBERD

What if an episode of The Walking Dead was set on a passenger airliner before civilization had fallen?

That’s basically what AMC is planning in a highly unusual — if not totally unprecedented — new special that’s set during the time period of the hit drama’s companion series, Fear the Walking Dead.

Here’s the plan: EW has exclusively learned AMC is producing a half-hour special that will tell a stand-alone story following a group of passengers facing a walker attack on an airline while in flight. One character who survives that encounter will then join the cast of Fear the Walking Dead in season 2. So, yes: Zombies on a Plane.

Previously, AMC has had stand-alone The Walking Dead online web series, but the network never used such content to introduce a new character before they joined the show. The airline attack story will debut online, and will unfold this in chapters that will air during Walking Dead’s on-air telecasts. In other words: You’re watching The Walking Dead, AMC cuts to commercial break, then you get a chapter in the as-yet-untitled stand-alone airline attack drama.

Beyond that, details are scarce. We assume the flight is headed to Los Angeles, since that’s the setting of Fear (L.A. residents, insert your LAX-is-already-run-by-zombies joke here). Our lingering questions: What’s the stand-alone content called? Who is the new character being introduced and who will play them? (Presumably AMC will be reluctant to release that because that would then reveal which passenger survives.) How many pieces of this interstitial will there be, and across how many Walking Dead episodes will it air?

A plane has been used as a setting for a zombie outbreak before, most memorably during a sequence in the otherwise lackluster World War Z. There was also a 2007 movie called Flight of the Living Dead (which also carried the subtitle Outbreak on a Plane for those who didn’t find Flight of the Living Dead clear enough). It will be intriguing to see how TWD’s team add new twists into that trapped-group premise. Producers of the special content include Dave Erickson and Fear co-executive producer David Weiner.

The Walking Dead returns Oct. 11. Companion series Fear the Walking Dead recently premiered to a record 13.3 million viewers, including three days of DVR playback, making it the biggest series cable debut ever.

I'm excited! My friend wound up with an extra ticket. We're going to NYCC that day and the Walking Dead premiere that night.

We're not allowed to bring in phones, tablets, or cameras of any kind, I think I just signed over my soul to AMC confirming the invite because we're apparently not allowed to say what happens in the episode online. :wow:

I am so jealous. :sly:
I'm sure you'll be on your best behavior. :gngl:

Rick has become so awesome now, re-watching the whole thing at the moment and he annoyed me in season 2, but from killing Shane onwards he has just been awesome!

I think he's just gonna keep getting more darker and brutal as the seasons go on.

So...something about Carol suddenly came to me one night.

[BLACKOUT]forgive me if someone else already had it figured out.[/BLACKOUT]

But...

Is it possible that Carol cut her hair short so Edd couldn't pull it?

Yeah. I'm watching last season right now on disc. It's making me want more. :)

I got seasons 1-4 on blu ray about a month ago and am re-watching them all, close to finishing season 3 I had forgotten how good it was. But yeah its making me even more anticipated for the new season. Season 6 trailer was awesome as well.

I finished rewatching season 1, and I am now 8 episodes in to season 2. I haven't watched season 2 since it first aired.

Yeah, there's some really dumb stuff in season 2, in my opinion. However, I think there's some great stuff, too (I'm reminded of how much I miss Shane, for instance). I find this season to be much more enjoyable when you watch multiple episodes in one sitting. I remember how frustrating season 2 was when it first aired, because we all had to wait for a new episode every 7 days, which definitely made the season move more slowly. Binge-watching some episodes makes everything move a lot faster, in my opinion.

Rewatching season 2 isn't the chore I thought it was going to be, which is cool.

I liked season 2 when I first saw it but found it a slight bit of chore on recent re-watch. Rick annoyed me, but thankfully grew better, and yeah I miss Shane and Dale. There were some great moments during it as well though. Season 3 I loved both first time and on re-watch.

Anyone see the set picture that's supposedly Jesus? Anybody recognize the actor?

Just finished rewatching season 3. An overall solid season; my opinion of it hasn't changed since the first time I watched it. I'm excited to watch season 4 again, since it's one of my favorite seasons.

Also, I have to admit this (as much as I hate to admit it): After rewatching the first 3 seasons, I can finally call myself a Daryl and Carol shipper; a "Caryl Shipper," if you will. :p

Season 3 is my least favorite season so far. It started off promising with the first 4 episodes, but the mid season had a lot of filler eps (with the exception of "Clear" and "This Sorrowful Life" being the only standouts). Rick temporarily became unlikable after Lori bit the dust, Andrea making the most asinine decisions yet, Tyreese being forced into the series without contributing much to the story/plot but to fan service, underdeveloped characters who get killed off for shock value (looking at you Oscar & Axel), the lackluster Woodbury/Prison battle that was being hyped up most of the mid season, etc.

And imo Season 3 should've been condensed to 10-13 episodes b/c a lot of storylines either dragged, were stagnant, or pushed aside for the next zombie kill/action scene. I blame a lot of that on Mazzera being the show-runner that season. I still enjoy season 3 for what it was, but it had a lot of potential to better and more. I often wondered how Gimple would've handled it if he was the show-runner then.

The first half of season 3 is much stronger than the second half, in my opinion. I agree with you on a lot of points here. I still overall like the season for what it is instead of what I wanted it to be, if that makes any sense.

The only episode of season 3 that I flat-out don't care for is the final episode. Agreeing with your point about the buildup for the battle between the prison and Woodbury, I found the final episode to be very lackluster. The only plus was Andrea dying ...

Andrea, Tyreese being forced into the series as mentioned and the Governor acting more comic booky than his own counterpart definitely ruined 3B for me. Looking back its almost how I'd describe the first and second half of 5A; solid return up until the writers force in a bunch of (filler) crap.

I'm almost finished rewatching season 4 (I'm on the last episode right as I'm typing this), which is actually my favorite overall season. I've said this on other boards before, but I am a very character-driven person; I care a lot about the characters and how they progress in a story. Season 4 has a lot of that, and I think it works really well here ... For the most part.

There are a few nitpicks and "huh?" moments I have with this season; my biggest one being Sasha and Glenn getting over their virus so quickly after the fall of the prison. Boy did they drop that storyline fast!

The second half of season 4 is my favorite part of the season. I feel that there are a lot of strong episodes here (especially the one all focused on Carol and Tyreese; one of my all-time favorite Walking Dead episodes).

Season 5 will be up on Netflix on September 28th. I plan to only rewatch about half of the episodes, since I thought a good chunk of season 5 was awful (seriously, eff that dumb hospital storyline). I keep telling myself that the group found Beth being cooked at Terminus; yup, that's the story I'm sticking to. :p
