I did this too. Other than the odd bits of alchemy you have to perform for quests, I pretty much ignored it. Like sending out probes in Mass Effect 2, Witcher 3 sort of makes you think alchemy is necessary for success -but it's not. You can get by just fine without it.

...which isn't to say don't use alchemy. Only that I didn't.

Yeah, never felt like alchemy was necessary. Also it being kind of passive, it didn't fit my gameplay style.
 
i got this thing for free at launch and i still have yet to play it. I made it to the first tavern and havent gone back
 
Alchemy is the best tree because it makes Swordsmanship and Signs better without having to invest in them. In fact investing in Alchemy is better for Signs and Swordsmanship than specializing in either.

The trade off is that you actually have to get the top tier recipes for you to basically run around in God Mode.

Yes, those are all passive stat boost. Do you know what passive means?

I enjoy the higher forms of shields, fire, Aard, and sword techniques. They are visually awesome, and allow for variety outside of drink stuff. Which I still do, just not to the point of not being able to see the top portion of my screen. :funny:

By the way, did you not notice that "alchemy build" had a lot in swords as well? So it isn't a alchemy only build. In fact it is dependent on swordsmanship being unlocked to the third level.

This is my third time trying to play. I would get up to the same part, and either be too tired, because I would play late, and fall asleep, or I would get so frustrated by how weird the controls felt. I would try to continue, but then I'd completely forget what happened before I stopped.

But with a bunch of games that I'm dying to play set to come out in the next two weeks, I figured now would be my best chance to play and focus on it, and I'm actually really enjoying it. Although, it's not as clean as bug/glitch free as many have said it is. It's not broken or anything, but there's just some things that happen that kinda kill the immersion.
 
Picked up the GOTY version recently and finally made a start on this. Great to be back in this world!

Hey, me too! I own it on PS4, got the Collector's Edition and bought the DLC and finished everything (still need a couple trophies though).

But, since I share systems with my brother, I'm using the Xbox One now. And just got the GOTY Edition for $25 on XBL. It's honestly a hell of a price, the Expansion Pass goes for that price. Getting the base game with all of the free DLC and the Expansions (it's all one download, instead of downloading each piece) for that price...couldn't pass it up.

I think I'll try a different build too. I had a hybrid Alchemy-Signs build before, so I think I'll try something else...though I love my Quen sign. Quen has been my best friend since Witcher 2.

Yes it was an amazing price for all that content. I'll be going heavy on signs but probably not so much on alchemy. Btw what difficulty level did you play on/will you play on?

I'm playing the GOTY and Horizon ATM. This game is just beautiful,an Incredible achievement of story,gameplay,Open world design, quests. Just amazing.

Yeah, definitely. I haven't decided what build to go with, though by the end of my PS4 playthrough I really poured into alchemy. Not sure how to spec this time out. I don't know if I'm prepared to leave behind Quen. I think you'll enjoy a heavy signs build. I know I did. Aard, Quen, and Igni were so fun for me to use in combat. Especially with the DLC mutations, that added a chance of Ice freeze with Aard. Some of the DLC modifiers to armor and weapons, I remember, had some nice sign bonuses. I think there was one that automatically put up Quen when you got into combat.

I played on Blood and Broken Bones. I'm feeling pretty confident in myself now, so I'll probably play on Death March this time.
 
It took me about three tries to finally get into the Witcher 3, mostly because I didn't have the free time I'd like to devote to this. I really love the game, but I had to take a break because I decided to start reading the books and I was instantly hooked. I' just waiting for the last one to come in the mail today, and once I finish that, I'll hopefully be done with Horizon, Zelda and Mass Effect, so I'll be able to better appreciate the rest of the game and world then I return.

Haha I had a buddy who had the exact same dilemma. He purchased the game sometime near the release of the last DLC but is just now getting in to it because of how much devotion the game deserves. A masterpiece like this cant be experienced in passing, it requires and deserves ones full attention.
 
So there's not going to be a Witcher 4.
 
I am getting really deep into this game! Gonna have to play it simultaneously with Mass Effect and Battlefront/Battlefield. The characters are so good.

It's my favorite game so far this gaming generation. I originally bought it for ps4 and recently bought it again to try it out on pc, plus I got to try out the first 2 games too. The Witcher 2 was really good as well, but as much as I tried I couldn't get through the first Witcher game, the game play was just too dated.

I'm loving what I've done so far. I prefer the signs that have a good visual power as I want every combat to look awesome even more than I want to win the fight haha. Sword and sorcery battlemage is my usual go-to for fantasy RPGs and I've not invested anything into the alchemy side yet. Am I missing out? I'm tempted to almost skip it as I don't really enjoy micro-managing that stuff as opposed to just letting loose in battle and always seem to consume stuff by mistake due to carrying over controls from other games in my head. Just can't wait to see what happens in the rest of the story.

Oh I really want to read the books. How many are there? I need to check if there are any audiobooks too.

It's a shame that I've properly got into this just as Mass Effect is coming out. Will just need to spend twice as much time on gaming for now. Family/friends/work/food etc will all have to wait. :woot:
