CD Projeckt Red The Witcher 3

So there's not going to be a Witcher 4.

That's not what they said. They said they aren't currently working on it. Which makes perfect sense with Cyberpunk.
If they ever do go back I don't expect it for a very long time, probably even next gen. Which is a big shame but I'm sure this company will put out stellar products in its stead.

It's my favorite game so far this gaming generation. I originally bought it for ps4 and recently bought it again to try it out on pc, plus I got to try out the first 2 games too. The Witcher 2 was really good as well, but as much as I tried I couldn't get through the first Witcher game, the game play was just too dated.
Yes pretty sure it's going to be my no.1 to date.

If there's a Witcher 4 don't expect to see Geralt, Cirilla, or any of Sapkowski's characters again. It will be in the same world, but maybe a far off place that was barely covered in the novels like Ofir or Zerrekania.

It's a shame because I was looking forward to seeing Borch Three Jackdaws and his two bodyguards/wives. The best one-off supporting character of the series and he was only mentioned in the games through Saskia.

If they make another, I would fully expect the lead to be Ciri.

Would love that.

I haven't finished the game yet, but from what I've heard, it ends in a way that wouldn't leave the door open for future adventures.

It is kinda a shame though, because Ciri is as much the focus of the books later on as Geralt is early on.

Not happening. 3 endings, Ciri isn't a Witcher, ect ect.

Zerrekania is the only country that still makes Witchers (Manticore).

In the first game you could romance Triss or Shani. One became canon. Why? Because that is what worked for the next story told. And if any ending is canon, it is the ending where Geralt is a good papa, who lets his daughter grow, while stilling comforting her in her time of need and letting her be what she wants to be:

There is no good ending. And regardless of your so-called good ending Ciri isn't a Witcher. No mutations or Trial of Grasses ect means no Witcher. Triss didn't let Vessemir give her the shrooms and mutagens and Ciri quit her Witcher training at 14 to take up sorcery with Yenn.

Stick to Star Wars.

Oh I really want to read the books. How many are there? I need to check if there are any audiobooks too.

It's a shame that I've properly got into this just as Mass Effect is coming out. Will just need to spend twice as much time on gaming for now. Family/friends/work/food etc will all have to wait. :woot:

The books were written in Polish, but as of now afaik have all been translated. The last one was published in English this year. And all of them are available in audiobook format on Audible.com.

The Witcher novels can be split into two sets: the original short stories, collected in two anthologies, and the novels themselves, dubbed the “Blood of Elves” saga. Here’s the reading order, starting with the short stories:

The Last Wish (Written in 1993, Translated in 2007)

The Sword of Destiny (Written in 1992 — but chronologically takes place after the first anthology — Translated in 2015)

The Blood of Elves (Written in 1994, Translated in 2009)

Times of Contempt (Written in 1995, Translated in 2013)

Baptism of Fire (Written in 1996, Translated in 2014)

The Tower of the Swallow (first released in 1997, Translated in 2016)

The Lady of the Lake (first released in 1999, Translated in 2017).

Offs, youre splitting hairs. Yes, she didnt have the mutations, but she was trained as a Witcher, has her own brand of powers, and does the work of a Witcher. She is for all intents and purposes a Witcher with a dash of sorceress. A hybrid.

And yes the ending with Ciri doing the work of a Witcher and continuing to be in Geralt's life is a happy ending to anyone that isnt a sour puss.

Nahh... CDPR clearly likes the Empress ending and Sapkowski's novels are closer in tone to the Empress ending. Also fits the theme of being unable to avoid Destiny which Cirilla has been doing since she began running from Duny and her Empire. There's also a whole interview above about how Soviet Russia shaped their "dark" POVs over there.

Ciri becoming a Witcher is fan pandering at best. It reeks of fanfiction.net. I know what you do Darth! :argh:

The good ending of the main game and the good ending of Blood and Wine leaves the door wide open for a sequel with Ciri as the lead and Geralt as a supporting character.

I understand this is minor, but if you play the Witcher 1 and romance Shani and leave Alvin with her. Witcher 2 will address it if you carry over your save.

"Some of you have surely heard the rumors about the relationship that bloomed between the young medic Shani and Geralt. I hasten to inform you that they are all true. I consider Shani a friend both true and old. We go back to the days when I lectured in minstrelsy at Oxenfurt University, and I was the one to introduce her to the witcher. Upon Geralt's return to the living, they were reunited in Vizima, where the red-haired medic competed with Triss Merigold for Geralt's heart. She emerged victorious from the rivalry. The flame of their romance blazed bright, but it burned out quickly. Though a very young woman, Shani proved more mature than the witcher, who had always found relationships puzzling and difficult. Geralt would dodge his obligations towards her, preferring instead to pursue the missions King Foltest assigned him. The medic quickly realized this flour would yield no bread. She had a serious conversation with the witcher, and they parted amicably. Shani accepted an offer to teach at Oxenfurt and left for that city, whereas Geralt followed Foltest to the lands of the La Valettes. After splitting with Shani, the witcher needed comforting and quickly found solace in Triss Merigold's arms."

They could be really crazy and do something that directly addresses the choices you made and have vastly different starts to the next game, but personally, I think the The Witcher is over. The games were a solid tribute to the novels that inspired them and were a fitting end to Geralt's story as a whole.

I just got Lady of the Lake last week, and I skimmed through the back, and it turns out there is another English translation coming out next year. It's called Season of Storms, and according to wikipedia, it's "not a sequel to the original Witcher Saga, but rather is set between the short stories in the first book in the series, The Last Wish."

Every time I load up the game I rewatch the intro. Love it!

Awesome!! Thanks a lot for this

Doesn't matter, she's still not a Witcher. BlueLanternKal is exactly right in his response and explanation of why that particular ending is the least close to "cannon" of all the endings.

Yes it's amazing. And playing those 2 together is a great combo.

I'm loving what I've done so far. I prefer the signs that have a good visual power as I want every combat to look awesome even more than I want to win the fight haha. Sword and sorcery battlemage is my usual go-to for fantasy RPGs and I've not invested anything into the alchemy side yet. Am I missing out? I'm tempted to almost skip it as I don't really enjoy micro-managing that stuff as opposed to just letting loose in battle and always seem to consume stuff by mistake due to carrying over controls from other games in my head. Just can't wait to see what happens in the rest of the story.

Thanks, will look out for these DLC modifiers.

With Alchemy, your mileage might vary. I think because I loved The Witcher 2, and managed to beat it on Dark Mode (the highest difficulty), I've been conditioned for some stuff. Like using Quen. That sign was my best friend in Witcher 2. I got used to alot of stuff that worked for me, like drinking potions and preparing blade oils and using bombs. So, alot of those habits carried over pretty well into Witcher 3.

It's fun for me to drink the right potions and use the right blade oils, but I could see that being an issue for others. You'll spend alot of time tracking down formulas and ingredients, and you'll probably spend time calculating the toxicity on how many and which potions to drink. (Also, fyi, Geralt looks like a vampire even in cutscenes when your toxicity is high from drinking potions) Some of the alchemy skills and the potions themselves have synergy with other skills, so they might be a great support to whatever your primary skills are. I'd say if you like the sound of managing it, then let some upgrade points pile up. Save your game, and pour a couple points into it to see some of the benefits, and see if you like it. If not, you could re-load your save prior to using those points. Or, spend the money to respec. For me, I wound up with my Signs-Alchemy Hybrid because I'd ultimately maxed out most of my Signs, and had all of these extra points to spend.

By the way, I just noticed there's an option to pause the action when using the quick menu (ie: manually switching signs, etc.), instead of things just slowing down. It must have been part of a past update because I no idea it was in the options menu, under Alternative Quick Menu or something like that. It changes it so that when you tap LB, it pauses things, and if you hold LB it slows everything down like before. I really liked the option.

Canonically Witchers live and die by their potions and serums. Gotta go green every time. I mix in some sword work too. But it's through alchemy that they can even cast signs so I don't even bother putting points in magic.

Ironically a potion based build, especially with max toxicity is overall the best. Try getting killed on Death March with 3 active decoctions and enough room left over for potions. It isn't happening. With that much of an investment in it both swordsmanship and magic are equal to having heavily invested in those paths anyway.

Sorry for my rant. I just feel like it gets ignored and people are missing out on a very cool way to play the game.

Based on the world of the games and the books, the one that feels most canonical is Ciri becoming Empress. That's not a bad ending though, it's more bittersweet. For starters, Ciri is a good Empress and probably leads a prosperous time for her kingdom. Not only that, she didn't die from The White Frost. So, she goes on to become a good queen to her people using the knowledge and wisdom that her true parents, Yennefer and Geralt and Vesemir, taught her.

Also no matter what, none of the games are canon. The games do a great job of taking inspiration from the books and referencing them and setting up a scenario like the players are getting a proper continuation and conclusion to the books. But no matter what, the conclusion is what the author says it is. And if he says the games are not canon, they aren't canon. The games are their own thing and all their scenarios are basically separate AU.

Also, the Signs are not alchemy. They are simple magic spells the Witchers learn in their arts. The Witchers are not powerful magic casters like sorcerers and mages, but they are able to conjure the lower-level signs to help them do their work.

The Signs are basically small little magic spells. They are done using the finger symbols and concentration. This is taken from Blood of Elves:

...The witchers adapted the spell, making use of the fact that it does not require knowledge of a magical formula — concentration and the hand gesture are enough. That's why they call it a Sign.

Alchemy is decidedly different. It's transmutation of something into something new.

There's nothing wrong with Ciri becomes a Witcher ending. OK, she didn't get the Trials of Grasses, but for the sake of the games and for all intents and purposes, she's basically an unofficial Witcher but a Witcher nonetheless. It's an ending in the game, and it's a decent enough ending. I don't think it's the best ending because I think it's really better for everyone that Ciri ascends to the throne even if it means she can't be with Geralt and Yennefer. Regardless, it's better for the kingdom and all its citizens that she is queen, and Geralt and Yennefer could still visit her anyway when they take breaks from where ever they ended up.

In Blood and Wine, the game ends with Geralt getting his own place. If players went after their favorite lady, they get to settle down with her. The rule of the Witchers is that they never die in their own bed. But in the games, the time of the Witchers is ending. And it seems Geralt is able to settle down for a quiet, peaceful life, depending on how they play.

That's why I love Witcher 3. No matter what anyone says, there's no one way to play the game. IMHO there is no true canon ending. Or rather, the true ending is whatever the player wants it to be. If they want Geralt to be with someone, he can be with someone. If they want Geralt to reject both women, he can. If he tries to get them both, he will get rejected by them. Geralt might be too over-protective of Ciri and cause her own doom inadvertently. Or Geralt can encourage her to become a great leader or even a Witcher by trade. The player's play style determines what ultimately happens. There's no one or proper way.

The only true proper way when you get down to it is what the creator says is law. So don't worry about that and just have fun with the games.

If they really wanted to, CD Projekt RED could do a Ciri only game. Honestly, I'd rather use what they built for Witcher 3 and make some completely new dark fantasy adventure.

It was indeed, Sapkowski seems kinda bitter at the whole thing like a Polish Alan Moore.

On an unrelated note, am I the only one who thinks Assassins of Kings is the weakest of the three games?

It's the kind of thing I'd heard often about in Art School, about artists who didn't think long term and signed a rights contract for something they created only to get bitten down the road. He does sometimes come off like a Polish Alan Moore, too. But, in this case it sounds like it's entirely on him. CDPR probably would have wanted the profit sharing, too, because it was probably alot of money they had to give him up front. And for a new IP and a new developer, they probably could have used every cent they could get.

But, to be perfectly fair...who the hell would have thought that a character and book series from Poland could be adapted so well into a series of videogames that would then make it a worldwide success? Sapkowski taking that bet makes sense.

I mean, it's a real hands off "just give me my money" approach, but it makes sense why he'd take the money upfront (losing more in the longterm).
