PREVIEW FOR THE 8/30 EDITION OF IMPACT, AND IT LOOKS LIKE A GOOD ONE by Dave Scherer @ 9:44 AM on 8/28/2012
With two weeks left in the tournament, this Thursday's edition of Impact will have three Bound For Glory Series matches.
Jeff Hardy vs. Kurt Angle
Rob Van Dam vs. James Storm
AJ Styles vs. Samoa Joe
On paper, that looks strong. They will also follow up the attack on Austin Aries by the Aces & 8s as well as give the verdict on Gut Check competitor Kris Lewie.
Cody Rhodes gets stuck rehashing a storyline from... what, over a year ago with a less talented wrestler? What a waste. He's not even Dashing Cody Rhodes anymore. Now his character is regressing. Bad news for Cody.
Okay, one good thing I did see about these Anger Management segments was Kane deadpanning his life history. That was the best Kane's done in a long time.
So it's early moring and I can't sleep, I'm grumpy and felt like posting my issues with WWE that have led to me simply not watching after 20+ years. Needless to say the fact WWE still book like we are in 1986 but without the charm or brains plays a huge part as it infects every area of the product, but I'll bullet point it.
CM Punk - Finally a face that is actually over with the over 12's and who can sell merch like Cena! Best booking plan? tone down what made him popular, then make it clear he's second fiddle, then turn him into a chicken**** heel and feed him to Cena!
Cena - An impotent face, half the crowd hate him no matter what, his mix of "Gee golly" attitude, pious bellowing about how righteous he is and horrible comedy shtick has grated on just about everyone old enough to realize breasts are awesome.
You can't get heat on him so Punk has to beat up a jaded old fart announcer, because **** knows beating Rey Mysterio up ceased working years ago and Ryder proved useless as surrogate heat in the Kane feud.
Sheamus - Once a mean destroyer, then he went face and just won matches every week, now he's a big jolly ginger giant telling tales from the old country and even worse jokes than Cena, I am sure Vince has designs on getting him on the side of that sweetcorn tin.
Del Rio - Is the Latin market that lucrative? Do WWE brass really think Latin fans wont watch as much without a representative? how the hell did WWE draw in Mexico before Rey Mysterio? Honestly Del Rio has been pushed forever as a top heel despite having no mic skills and not being over, Christ! his half dead looking ring announcer is more over.
Orton - He was last interesting in 2009 before his balls were removed. Now he just talks and walks very slowly and has the odd good match here and there.
Daniel Bryan - Made the mistake of getting really over, this had to be fixed and quickly, hence the barking loon in a comedy angle with Kane, the guy known for being in the worst angles in WWE history.
AJ Lee - Yes she grew a surname when made GM. Classic Vince, take a quirky and interesting character, change what got them over and ram them down everyone's throat. She is now an obnoxious poison midget in a power suit.
Triple H - Just **** off you tired *****ebag, you can't work without a crutch now, you got your Mania matches with Taker, you actually did the right thing at Summerslam, just go away and sort out the booking instead of lingering around like the stale remnants of a fart from an 80 year old who's been on a curry and cider binge, you aren't Shawn or Flair, deal with it!
Brock Lesnar - A true box office attraction, a legit wrecking machine, the best plan of action? job him out in his first match to Cena who lost to a movie star in a phoned in match instead of doing it the other way around, then book him in a tedious 4 month angle with a has-been, have him actually win, but only so he can lose the rematch to said has-been who just wanted to wait a bit longer and oil it up some more before he got his "rub."
Dolph Ziggler - Best athlete in the company but Sheamus has beaten him so many times I'm surprised he hasn't been mounted on the all green Sheamusmobile Vince is no doubt having built for the cartoon launch. Honestly Dolph is in a no win situation, chasing a belt that doesn't matter with a case he didn't need.
The Big Show - He was likable as the giant military gnome, now he's just pointless as the unstoppable monster who is always stopped.
Social Media - WORST THING EVER! just get rid of it, it sucks on every level, no one wants to see short videos of inbred marks who don't seem to get that wrestling is a work, these people only serve to make the business look worse, and ditch the z list celebs as ambassadors, they suck, and not in the good porn way.
Cody has seemingly stalled, Christian is a jobber, Ryback will be pushed despite no one giving a **** and Cesaro is working an angle with a comedy act who's sock puppet has a hard on for his girlfriend, genius!
The booking is infantile, idiotic and boring, the belts are worthless and the talent undervalued as Cena and Triple H have a circle jerk with nostalgia acts.
The one thing that gets me, is guys like Punk, Bryan and Sheamus each have the perfect persona that can be heel or face depending on the fan's viewpoint. No need for the drastic changes and yet they do them.
And here. There really is infinite potential on the E's roster, but practically all of it is being wasted horribly.
Punk - Leave him as the pipebomb dropping flag bearer of the Reality Era and be the voice that calls out the fallacies that go on in the E. He can be the guy that calls out the moronic sheep in the audience ala his first Pipebomb but still appeals to the masses of fans who are tired of being fed garbage over and over again.
Cena - The Superman to Punk's Batman. He can be the honest, Make-A-Wish hugging boy scout of the E, but have him actually take what goes on in the ring seriously for crying out loud. It's makes his in ring character look like he doesn't care because he knows he's the face of the company and that no matter how many times he loses, he'll still be handed a title shot.
Sheamus - Should be left as a tweener, imo. I miss "The Fiery Right Hand of Ireland" and "The Celtic Warrior". Make him a guy who wants to fight no matter what, against face or heel, win the gold, and then go enjoy the spoils of victory afterward. Could even have an in-joke about being a typical Irishman.
Del Rio - Really just needs a clean slate, but could have worked given time to develop. Should be in the IC title scene honing and refining his character.
Orton - Should be another tweener with his unstable persona. Untrostworthy in tag teams since he might just turn and RKO his partner for no reason, and is a guy who does anything neccessary to win.
Daniel Bryan - Should be the Kurt Angle circa 2000 as an arrogant, slighty goofy ****, but a technical badass who can move from face to heel with ease, being so overly optimistic and arrogant with his brilliant "YES!" gimmick.
AJ - Couldn't have put it better myself. Should have been the one to bring in Dean Ambrose at Bryan's wedding, being Ambrose's Harley Quinn and turning Bryan face in the process.
Triple H - I wish I could combine his star power with Chris Jericho's willingness to put over new talent cleanly. I think he could have played a power hungry, corporate heel brilliantly, screwing Punk out of his title sometime after Summerslam 2011 only for him to win it back at Wrestlemania over Triple H, giving Punk a Mania moment. Then be Lesnar's second victim and ride it out to retirement with the occasional match to put over, or at least make the younger opponent LOOK good.
Lesnar - Should be WWE's Bane, pure and simple. Acknowledge the fact that his contract has limited dates because he's the man and he always gets what he wants in his contract. Destroy the established stars and put over guys like Punk (With the angle idea I had and posted earlier in the thread) and other young talent who find ways to beat him.
Ziggler - Agreed on him being the best athlete. Should be paired up with Flair as his manager as quickly as possible and bring back that "HEEL" moniker he had and be the cocky heel who wins because he can do what no one else can do in the ring.
Big Show - I think the reasons for his heel turn and his promos after were really well done, but quickly lost steam. Probably best served in a tag team of some kind to keep him from eating pins.
Brodus Clay - Needs to actually get on the mic! Play up he's here to have a good time and make (insert title here) fun. I wonder if WWE could get away with him using "funk" in his promos. "I'mma funk you up!" "What the funk?!"
Ryback - Is never going to get over as Goldberg 2.0 . Give him an actual ring name (The **** is a Ryback anyway) and a nickname (The Razorback would work) and cut all the stupid chants and goofy finishers.
Cesaro - Haven't seen much of him since I don't watch much, but from the sounds of things, he needs to switch the US title to the European Championship and possibly reform the KOW when Ohno and Del Ray get called up.
Cody Rhodes - Should be the American Nightmare to his father's American Dream and possibly take Regal's moniker of the most diabolical man in wrestling.
Kane - Should be and mostly has been around to put talent over, but at least keep his character consistent as the sick and twisted monster who enjoys inflicting pain more than anything.
Christian -Thought he would make great enhancement talent in the IC title scene and should be there and occasionally flirting with the World Title scene.
I know there are much better ideas than mine, but I would like to think that what I sat down here and came up with in 20 minutes for the main roster is much better than what they're doing now, which is part of what is so frustrating about the state of the WWE today.
I'd like to think that this combined with the PPV schedule I have in my head and a possible merger of the WWE and World Heavyweight titles would make for a much more fluid, sensible, and hopefully entertaining product, but you'd think WWE would get at least SOMETHING right. /out of breath
I still don't like TNA all that much. It just doesn't feel anything like good pro wrestling to me. The production is horrible and in the in ring product is still behind the WWE at the best. It isn't like we are talking ROH at its best here.

When was the last time you watched TNA? The last two months it's been blowing WWE away in terms of in-ring product and storylines. And it's world title is treated with respect and prestige.

I have watched it a few times since the beginning of July. It is fun at times, but I can't take it to seriously. Putting aside the backstage and promos (that just doesn't work for me at all), I really don't enjoy the in ring product. I love Austin and Joe, but even they look sterile when in the TNA. There is something about the setup of the ring that makes it feel off to me. It is not intense and I don't find the majority of workers as talented or engrossing as a Punk, Dragon, Ziggler, Brock, or Cena.
There also seems to be a smirking crowd the entire time. While there are plenty of RAWs where the fans aren't interested in what the WWE is trying to sell them, there aren't reactions like what we will see next week on RAW in Chicago or Wrestlemania or Extreme Rules. It is not simply the size but the intensity. I still watch my old ROH DVDs from time to time and it is that kind of intensity and lunacy is what a small crowd that is invested can bring. The only time I have felt that in recent TNA was that British show they did awhile back.
I don't even care for Triple H that much, but I saw a few people in the crowd last night who actually looked affected by his ego stroking.

I like Ziggler, he's one of my favorites. But in terms of athleticism, AJ Styles has him beat. Not with ease, but there aren't too many better than him. I've seen the guy wrestle for 10 years, and it doesn't feel like he's missed a step.

Meltzer believes the real reason Triple H held Foley in contempt is because he gets irritated over the consensus of his closest co-workers that his memorable matches with Foley in 2000 "made him a star."
Finally HHH came out to cut his promo. With an HBK Was Better Than You: sign in the front row. Ha. HHH got all emotional while talking and said everyone comes to a crossroad in their career. He said time was the one thing you cannot fight. He said he didnt want to be the guy that just hung around and waited to long to go. HHH said he doesnt know. He said what he wants to do is be the Cerebral Assassin and rise up again and kick Brock Lesnars ass. He said that is what he wants to do, but he doesnt know if he can. Hunter said knowing that everyone cared is what got him through everything in his career. He thanked the crowd for letting him play the game, and he thanked the crowd aand said hopefully they never forget him.
Triple H - I wish I could combine his star power with Chris Jericho's willingness to put over new talent cleanly. This is exactly what should have happened but instead Triple H, like the succubus he is, stole all that heat and limelight for himself and feuded with Nash.
