May 2, 2004. I was in El Paso, TX for the Smackdown house show there. I found out where they were going to be before the event so I made my way to the location. When I entered the place, I saw this rather obese man sitting down. I wasn't sure if it was him or not because of the sunglasses he was wearing along with a blue baseball hat, but his short jet black hair and mustache kept me second guessing so I hit him up and as soon as he talked, I was relieved I had the right person instead of my usual mistaken identity mishaps.

It was cool to be a Cena fan at the time so I was wearing his first shirt, the white one with the blue hands on the front sporting "Word Life". And just to be even more of a fan, I was wearing an actual steel chain necklace. When I asked to take a picture with him, he kindly agreed and got up for me, but was perplexed by my metallic attire. He grabbed it and was impressed that it was the real deal before I got my photo taken with him literally yanking my chain. And that's my story of when I met the legendary Paul Bearer. Rest in peace...

My fondest memory of him though will always be my favorite segment of The Funeral Parlor:

21 years later and this segment still gives me goosebumps...

Why do you want them to turn face when you know exactly how WWE is going to treat them?

I guess you have a point. I'm really sick of WWE's faces.

It's like they turn every face into Cena-lites, or give them some characteristic of his that takes away their uniqueness.

Guess they can't have the new face be more interesting than their top guy.

Thank you for sharing. :)

I wish I was watching wrestling during that era. As cartoonish as it looked, it looked fun. And just seeing the younger versions of the legends before they became legends, that's surreal to me at times.

I'm calling it now.. I think that Mania we will see Taker continue the streak and at the end of a match that may be close to HBK/Taker caliber that Taker extends his hand out of respect for Punk and Punk accepting it... ending the whole " I deserve respect thing"
I see Rock and Cena in a lackluster match with both guys being booed with Cena getting the majority of the boos. I think that then you get a Cena heel turn and ending the show with a new champ and new top heel in John Cena

Raw will be Punk saying that he got the ultimiate sign of respect in that handshake with the Undertaker and Heyman comes out and tries to "brainwash" Punk. Leading to Punk vs Shield and Punk vs Lesnar(Summerslam)

Cena comes out and says he still is all about Hustle Loyalty and Respect and that the fans still hate it for it and he's tired of it. Cena can feud with some babyfaces, Jericho, Orton, Ryback, etc... Leading to Cena vs Punk at WM30 as the ME

so your basically calling what I said about 2 threads back.

Man, that sucks to hear about Paul. I was really hoping to see that guy pop up for 'Taker's WM match, too.

RIP.

I just heard the news about Paul. It's a very, very sad day. I have been a huge fan of him and Undertaker since day one. For me, Paul is one of the best managers the WWE has ever had. He was iconic from his very first appearance.

I cannot imagine what Mark (Undertaker) and Glenn (Kane) must be going through. Paul was an integral part of both of their careers and more importantly, they were all close friends behind the scenes.

Rest in peace, Paul. :csad:

Can't believe Paul is gone, guy scared the crap out of me more than Taker ever did.RIP Paul you were my fav manager :(

Paul Bearer Reveals The Undertaker's Endorsement Of CM Punk
Posted by: Ben Kerin of WrestlingNewsSource.com on Mar 06 2013
During an interview with the late Paul Bearer (William Moody) in*August 2012*PWTorch Livecast asked Bearer his thoughts on then WWE Champion CM Punk. Bearer reveled that The Undertaker gave CM Punk major endorsement in the WWE locker room during their introduction:

"C.M. Punk is a class act, and he's got it," Bearer exclusively told PWTorch editor Wade Keller. "I didn't meet Punk until I went back for that six-month run (2010-2011). I had watched him on television, of course, but I had never met him in-person before.

"I'll never forget myself, Undertaker, Big Show, and a couple of other guys standing over in the corner just shooting the breeze. C.M. Punk came walking by and Taker says, 'Percy, have you ever met Punk?' I said, 'No, I havent.' Taker called him over there and he's very, very respectful to our business and to me for having never met me before.

"Taker introduced me to him and Taker's exact words to me were: 'Punk - he's one of us.' That was how I was introduced to C.M. Punk by The Undertaker. For him to say that about a talent, that just means everything in the world. And to say, 'He's one of us,' that just meant something to that little group that was there."

The next thread title should be a tribute to Paul. Something like "It's the Wrestling Thread, Oh Yes"

Along with Savage/Elizabeth, no wrestler, manager relationship is, IMO, as iconic as The Undertaker and Paul Bearer. When I think of Taker, I think of him stalking toward the ring in purple smoke, trailing behind Paul Bearer. Great manager, and someone who seemed like a great guy. RIP.

I couldn't agree more.

For some reason, out of all Paul's work, this is the one quotation that comes to mind when I think of him. It's highly inappropriate and shouldn't be used (:hehe:) but anyone who can identify either the context or the storyline gets a prize (no you won't):

The Wrestling Thread had one foot in New York, and the other one in LA!

That's a good story. I would of like to meet Paul Bearer. It was fun watching him as a kid. I actually posted the beginning of the same segment on facebook last night

It's kind of funny because most of us have been saying the same thing. I remember talking about the handshake . He's kind of late to the party , but it goes to show we might have conjured up good outcomes for Wm in this thread.

I think Punk is more entertaining as a heel than a face. As time went on he got pretty boring as a good guy in my opinion. However, I think he's most entertaining when he straddles the line between the two. The whole thing that got me back into wrestling was CM Punk in the weeks leading up to and following Money in the Bank 2011. It's like once he became champion he wasn't allowed to be "edgy" anymore.

Hunter Rider said yesterday that Punk could keep the same character and still work as a face if WWE wasn't so stale. I think part of the problem was that Cena still got most of the focus. It made more sense for Punk to be feuding with Laryngitis , but I think he got stuck with Albert Del Rio and that didn't interest people. Punk was basically becoming part of the establishment he rallied against.

It was such a strange character , but he made it work. He was actually a mortician before the wrestling business. Here's a good interview he did with Cornette.

Just heard about Paul. So sad. :( RIP good man. There will never be another as great as you were.

And I'd just thought the other day that they might try to bring him back to have him bounce off of Heyman with the feud between Punk and Taker.

Taker's endorsement of Punk is pretty special, it explains why he chose him as the streak opponent.

As soon as his shirt outsold Cena's he was toned down, but this time I think he could retain more of the edge given how over he is in his current role, a bit like how they didn't alter Orton much when he turned face the second time.

I feel somewhat disenfranchised as I have no babyface to get behind. I mean Sheamus is a guy that I like but he's too smiley now. He should be a man of few words who doesn't crack jokes and just destroys people. Think Wolverine.

This is why I want either Punk or Ziggler to turn face. Because the faces in WWE suck. TNA knows how to have face characters who aren't annoying pieces of crap, so WWE has no excuse.

I know what you mean, from a storytelling POV I can't find a face to root for either, which is sort of foreign to the whole concept of pro wrestling.

Thank you for sharing. :)

It was a great era to grow up in for sure, the line between ridiculous and larger than life character was slim for sure but there was some great stars and angles, plus things made sense more often and the secondary titles mattered a lot more than they do now.

Saw Fast Five a few weeks ago.....was underwhelmed by the Vin Diesel vs. The Rock showdown. Hopefully Gina Carano vs. Michelle Rodriguez won't disappoint.

I started watching some of Bret Hart's dungeon collection blu ray. It's really good. Some of the matches are terrible in visual quality , but it's still cool to see them. I hope they do more sets like this.

- Word coming out of RAW is that WWE no longer wants Ric Flair doing anything really physical. While he threw some chops at Big E Langston on RAW, don't expect him to take any bumps or get into any brawls on WWE TV. There is some sort of health issue that WWE is concerned about with Flair. The feeling is that they would rather be safe than sorry.

I think Flair would die with a smile on his face in the ring.
