Sequels Things to Get Right

In the first movie they sounded forced and in the SM3 game he sounded bored but in the first two games I thought he did a good job.

He just doesn't have the look to me. Plus I want to cast on performing Peter first and comic timing second. He jsut hasn't proven himself to me, though.

The one-liners aren't really appropriate for most of the fights in the Spidey films because they involve Peter's loved ones in danger. If your girlfriend or aunt was in danger of falling to their death, would you be making sarcastic quips?

I'd also like to point out that the quips aren't non-existant in the movies. Spidey's make his remarks whenever someone isn't in danger. Off the top of my head:
"You're the one whose out Gobby...out of your mind!"
"I have a knack for that."
"Here's your change!"
"I guess you haven't heard. I'm the sheriff around here."

Plus, the conversation between Peter and Harry during their second fight was filled with their dumb remarks. So they aren't being ignored, just downplayed - and that's just because most of the fights have a serious tone to them.
You seem to get it, unlike most Spider-Man fans.

Not to mention that two out of four of those lines were the most cringe-worthy moments in their respective movies.

Then you better not read the comic books, because that's the kind of childish cringe worthy banter Spidey says x 1000.

Spidey barely has any more quips then the ones you've mentioned, so yes I would say that the quips are almost non-existent.

And yes, you're right, there are certain situations where Spidey wouldn't be making his quips, and if you notice in the comics he doesn't make quips when he has loved ones in serious danger. But there are still plenty of fight scenes in the movies when he doesn't have a serious loved one in danger. In the past movies there is usually not more then two major fight scenes involving a loved one. That leaves plenty of room for him to use his insults in other fights.

And two of the quips you used were exceptionally bad, and if people think think that jokes of those quality are the only kind that should be used for Spidey then they're horrible unimaginative. Just read a few issues of USM. Yes, he does have quips in that comic simmilar to the ones posted above, but many times his jokes are more sophisticated and intelligent, for quips that is.

And for those who are still trying to say that quips would somehow cheapen the movie, again I point out V for Vendetta. In that movie V said many little jokes, but did that somehow dampen the serious tone of the movie? No. And I find it humorous that people are suggesting adding quips would remove seriousness from Spider-man. The past three movies have been extremely campy in tone anyways, you're trying to tell me that adding a few quips would cheapen the movie more then Peter dancing down the street, or the "lets show how klutzy Peter is by having him get hit in the head twenty times" scene in SM2? I find that hard to believe.

Things to get right?

Better directing.
Sam Raimi directed one of the best sequels of all-time. He better step his game up and direct a quality Spider-Man 4 (if it actually happens, which I 99.9% doubt).

I disagree. It really depends on what comic/writer is handling Spidey. While sometimes he does spout out jokes like the above mentioned, in comics such as USM, his jokes tend to stay away from the stupid one liners, there they come more in a running mouth commentary style, and many times they're more intelligent then the simple one liners used in the Spider-man movies.

No, they're great in the comic books, and in the cartoons, but coming out of a live action person's mouth is instant Batman and Robin.

Nope, his quips are pretty much cheesy coming from the comics too (and they're suppose to be), but because it comes from the comics GEEKS can't admit to it. And the quips from the 90s cartoon was just plain annoying and over-done, Spidey couldn't say more than a few sentences without joking. The MTV cartoon quips got it right, not too much and not too little.

What do people expect, if you say those childish quips on screen, in live action, it can't do anything but come out cheesy? This has been my point for the longest time, it doesn't matter what actor you get. Quips have to be carefully written, so it's not too childish and said at the appropriate time.

Fanboys don't seem to get it. Comic Books, Cartoons and Movies are three very different medium. What may work in one may not work in another. You're under the impression that everything from the comics can work well on screen.

I guess if Electro is the secondary villain, there's going to be angry fanboys, when they don't put a yellow starfish on his face.

I'm not sure but it sounds like we are 100% agreeing.

Time for Peter to stop crying, learning life lessons, and keep his mother F'ing mask on.

The Spider-Man franchise should be lent to a new director now, there are too many ways to make a cooler franchise and I dont think Raimi should be treated like God and given the second trilogy.

Its time for someone else, someone who is gonna step up the action with Spider-Man vs. classic villians- people should learn from Transformers - I've never seen action like that. Thats what we need for the Spider-Man films, albiet we had some cool stuff, we now need to step it up.

Bye Sam.

Yeah, let's learn from Michael Bay...F--- YOU!

Now you've got me crying.

Now I don't mind the connections the villains have to Peter Parker, but if they introduce more then one villain in SM-4, leave it to only connors. If it's Electro, Kraven etc then don't make them people who know Pete, or are sympathetic. If Electros gonna be in a film, make him a complete ******* that the audience will hate, by his attitude and actions etc.

At least, thats my take.

Agreed...a lot of people just want them to adapt straight from the comic book.

For a bigger, more bombastic series like Fantastic Four, the full characterization of Dr. Doom was missed. He wasn't larger than life enough.

For Spider-Man, however, you need a nuanced, subtle, believable human being; you need to be able to relate to his heartaches, his wins, his losses; Raimi's done a great job, and Stan Lee approves. That's all I need, since I'm under the impression Stan Lee hasn't been that impressed with some of the other Marvel movies.

Spider-Man 2 had some of the greatest action sequences ever.

If they stop taking out the character development, Spider-Man will become just another bloated popcorn flick, with no meaning.

Exactly.

With Connors, of course he's sympathetic. But Kraven The Hunter has to be a monster, coming to kill Peter's friend.

Maybe we can feel a little sympathy for him if he blows his head off, but unless he does that...no.

You've never seen action like that? Try watching Bad Boys II or The Island. It's the same action in Transformers. It's just with giant robots instead.

Michael Bay is going to teach Sam Raimi....what how to e a money ****ing hack?

Look Transformers had great CGI, but the camera work, the eidting, it was all the ADD MTV/overused slow mo visible in all Michael Bay movies.

I think the train fight in MS2 is better than anything in Transformers or the ariel fight in SM3 for that matter and I liked for sheer scope Battle Building in SM2.

Yeah the scope is bigger in the climax of TF, but there is no tension. YOu don't care about any of the transformers. The villains have no development, Megatron has like 3 or 4 lines the whole freaking movie. The fight at the end is hallow, no one gave a **** Jazz died, hell I didn't even realize he was dead until it was over. And it was just bland.

Pretty, but bland.

What made that movie so entertaining was Shia LeBoeuff and the comedy that he and Bumblebee created. And hiding his robots from his parents scene.

Anyway, action is not Sam's problem. i do think his tone doesn't work for quips and the likes of Joss Whedon or Zemeckis or Speilberg. But only 2 have worked perfectly out of about 7 or 8 over 3 movies.

Thanks, it's nice to know that Jazz dies before I see the movie.

Transformers raised the bar. Thats what I want out of Spider-Man, except without State Puff Sandman and only 8 minutes of Venom.

Did SM2 and 3 not raise the bar?

Oh sorry eggy I forgot to tab it, but really he has like two lines the whole movie and it happens so quick half the audience didn't even notice..

some of you have to learn the movie spider-man, isnt the comic spider-man. maybe thats what upsets some of you, but what did you expect?

when i go see a spider-man movie, i go in knowing that the universe established in the triology is different than the stuff ive known since i was old enough to read. i like that about movies.

i love all 3 movies, and if there was any thing i could change, it would just be this: peter parker LIKES being spider-man. yeah it has its ups and downs, moments he doesnt want to do it anymore...but he likes it. swinging around, beating bad guys, all that stuff. if something bothers him, he swings around for a bit, goes to a nice spot and chills out. they only hint at that stuff in the films. and peters life isnt ALWAYS such a **** storm.

also, the stuff in transformers looked cool, but it doesnt hold a candle to sm2 or 3.
