Acting abilities should always come first in a movie, before the look of the character. Look at it this way. Katie Holmes is definitely more attractive than Maggie Gyllenhaal who kinda looks like she got hit in the face with something. However, Maggie was much better as Rachel Dawes than Katie.

According to whom? Both were the weakest points in the cast - at least with Katie I wasn't constantly asking myself "Bruce Wayne is being mopey over THAT!?"

I still think someone like Jennifer Connely or Rachael Weisz would've been perfect for the character and they're both more like Bale's age.

Its the fact that at least Katie Holmes played Rachel as a strong independant woman. Maggie played Rachel as a boring person that was only there to cause tension between Bruce and Harvey and to be a sidekick to Dent.

It was more of the way she was written than who was the better actress

The only time I cringed with Katie was *sass wrist* I'm a District Attorney, let me through.

Maggie's delivery was lacking whenever she was acting like a lawyer. Like dealing with the accountant.

I don't understand how anyone can like Spider-Man 3.

I cringed at Katie's delivery of "whaddya mean?" Otherwise, I thought she was alright. I honestly couldn't stand the character in the second one though. I guess that's more of a writing issue than Maggie herself. But they should have at least picked someone attractive...

There is no doubt Maggie is a better actress but I agree. The character was written terribly. She was forced into the story just to have a love interest in it. She could've been a pretty cool character though...too bad they screwed it up. It would've been better if they didn't go into it thinking "love interest for new movie"...they should've focused more on them being childhood friends with a few hints of feelings for each other.
