All USM did was take an established comic continuity and just tweaked it for a new generation of fans. That's all. There was no revolutionary new ideas in USM. And frankly most of the villains were pretty awful. Only Ock (Pre Ockneto) and Kingpin stayed true to their 616 counterparts while still being somewhat different.
The Mephisto thing is just a drop in the ocean of over 45 years of 616 continuity.
Well, if you're simplifying it yes. But it took Spider-man and put him in high school, but in today's generation, something we had never gotten before. Bendis updated the voice of Peter to today's generation, and he did a wonderful job of that. I also enjoy his interpretation of Aunt May more then the traditional frail woman character that she was for most of her incarnation in 616.
In addition, USM Eddie Brock was tens of hundreds of times better in terms of characterization then 616 Eddie Brock.
And just because 616 is longer doesn't mean that it's ideas aren't horrible. Sure, it's a drop in the hat, but it was a horrid, rancid, stinking insult to the history of spider-man drop. Ten times worse then anything USM has done.
USM is not perfect, but it's had some good ideas. Again, Spectacular Spidey pretty much had the perfect blend (aside from kittyKraven, they could have left that out). SSM stayed pretty much mostly 616, but took the better parts of USM. Namely updating the voice of Peter to a modern generation, and USM Eddie's character development.
