Endgame Thor/God of Thunder - Chris Hemsworth

To be fair the movie's almost been out for a week, how much longer are we gonna have to use spoiler tags?

Usually like 2 weeks is the standard. Y'all will live another week doing tags. I have faith.

A weeks not a long time at all. That's silly. Not everyone can go see a movie opening weekend/week.

It's long enough to me and I obviously don't think it's silly.

How about that?

You are one person. Again not everyone gets to the theater in the first weekend/week. It takes minimum effort to use spoiler tags. You asked how long, apparently it's 2 weeks. You'll live

It doesn't matter if you think it is silly or not. That is the rules we have on here, and posting is a privilege and part of maintaining that privilege is abiding by the rules.

So in short, spoiler tagging is still in place whether you like it or not.

The mod already made that clear thanks he doesn't need a parrot.

See ya then, I'm outtie :crso:

If the hammer can bring Thor back to life, save him from the brink of death, transform his clothes into armor, and
braid his friggin beard
what would be so far fetched about it turning
fat
in to
muscle
?

Let's also not forget this is a film with flying horses, giants, purple aliens, green men, talking raccoons, norse gods, and wizards. By the way I as well as most of the other people you are referring were talking about workout montage not transformation by hammer.

I dunno - I just seems to me that Thor's transformation to his old self needs to be earned. It's one thing for Asgardian magic to braid his beard. It's another to thing to perform liposuction. It would have seemed cheap to me personally.

I really think an opening workout sequence with Quill has practically written itself for the next Guardians film. Thor tossing spaceships and asteroids around while Quill tries to keep up on his bowflex making Peter feel more insecure than ever. It would get Thor back to where he needs to be very quickly, would feed right into the spirit of competition between them already established and it would be hilarious. The setup for the joke was already done in Infinity War when Thor first wakes up on the Benatar.

I will say though - to Quill's credit - he's one of the few folks who didn't fat shame Thor. I find that very interesting.

A few things i noticed on my 2nd viewing.

- That axe to the head was brutal. No f's given at that point.
- There where Sakaarian gladiators in New Asgard.
- Loved seeing Korg in the pineapple shirt. A nod to Taika Waititi's outfit in Comic Con.
- Thor only threatened the kid because he called Korg names.
- The moment Thor heard "Thanos" one could see the wheels start turning in his head.
- Miek still as a purple larva was chilling in the sofa eating pizza.
- Frigga told Thor exactly what he needed to hear. She was nice but also assertive and told him to be himself and not what others expected of him. Beautiful scene.
- The scene where Thor says "As long as we are all in agreement" and amours up is so cool.
- Thor was electrocuting foes with his hands and throwing them around in the battlefield. Also at one point he flew engulfed in lightning.
- Thor tells Valkyrie that she should rule New Asgard because she's a leader and in fact she did indeed lead the Asgardian army into battle. And she looked amazing on the pegasus.
- Thor said to Valkyrie what Frigga told him. He was going to be himself once again. And him going with the GOTG is basically a way of him doing something he likes and keeping him on the right path to his own redemption.

'Avengers: Endgame' filmmakers defend Thor's startling look

The post-Snap life has not been kind to the God of Thunder
The God of Thunder has seen better days.

Avengers: Endgame features Chris Hemsworth’s Thor with a startling new appearance that has fans talking — and not in the usual way when it comes to his physique.

Directors Joe and Anthony Russo explained to EW why they went this direction…

So… about Fat Thor.

Not only is it a shocking place to start given that Hemsworth’s ripped physique has been a signature part of this character’s appeal, but the Russo Brothers leave him this way.

There’s no magical pulse of power that instantly shreds him again. He stays in Lebowski mode through the end.

“No, he’s broken and that’s who he is moving forward,” said Joe Russo, who described it as their way of showing how he has fallen apart after the Snap, the destruction of his homeworld Asgard, and the loss of nearly everyone he knew or loved.

“How is everyone processing their grief? We wanted them all to process it in very different ways. And Thor is an exceedingly tragic character who was built from the time he was a boy to be a king,” Joe continued. “What is the distance that a character like that can travel, a god? Somebody, especially, who looks like Chris Hemsworth?”

So they made him a physical and emotional trainwreck.

There are a lot of jokes at his expense. Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper) calls Thor a “melting ice cream cone,” and even his mother, Frigga (Rene Russo), pleads with him to eat more salad before bidding him adieu. But the Russos insist there’s a serious side to Out-of-Shape Thor, too.

“Even though there’s a lot of fun to be had in the movie with his physical condition, it’s not a gag,” Anthony said. “It’s a manifestation of where he is on a character level, and we think it’s one of the most relatable aspects of him. I mean, it’s a very common sort of response to depression and pain.”

“What would happen if that character became extremely angry and started to punish himself and didn’t care anymore?” Joe said. “What would happen to him? He’s an alcoholic now, he doesn’t care about anything. He doesn’t care about himself.”

“That’s the reason why we didn’t end up turning him back,” Anthony said. “It’s an experience that stays with him.”

When Thor journeys back in time to Asgard during the era of The Dark World, he encounters his mother again, who is about to lose her life. “The future has not been kind to you,” she says after laying eyes on him.

Thor breaks. He tells her he failed to live up to what was expected of him.

“Everyone fails at who they’re supposed to be, Thor,” she answers. “The measure of a person, of a hero, is how well they succeed at being who they are,” she tells him.

That fortifies the Thunder God enough to keep going. “I missed you, Mum,” he says.

By the end of the story, Thor has ceded the crown of the survivor colony New Asgard to Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie, who has been filling the role of leader anyway. “It’s time to be who I am rather than who I’m supposed to be,” he tells her, echoing his mother’s words. “But you — you’re a leader. That’s who you are.”

Then he decides to become part of a new team — venturing off in the Benatar with the Guardians of the Galaxy, and chafing Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord by referring to the group as “The Asgardians of the Galaxy, back together again!”

It’s a glint of optimism. Maybe the next time we see him he’ll be in a better place.

“He may have made some repair in this movie and made progress, but that experience that brought him to that physical condition is still with him, and it’s a longer road beyond that,” Anthony said. “We don’t know what that road beyond that is for him.”

Probably the most poignant Thor scene for me was when he was basically begging Stark let him snap the Gauntlet at Avengers HQ. He was just so desperate to do something right with himself at that point.

Which is probably yet another reason why I am so disappointed with the film.

Not once did the Russos allow Thor to
redeem himself for his mistakes. Personally, I think Thor would have been the perfect choice to undo the snap if you removed the gamma radiation excuse.

It just sucks that out of all of the heroes (who survived the snap) involved in this film, Thor didnt do much if anything at all. He started the film as a failure and ended the film as a failure.

One big reason I would have liked to see Thor be the one called upon to do the snap in this film would be so that we have a ready-made excuse to give him the uru arm.

Well Thor was able to bring himself enough out of his depression to be there for the final fight. If he doesn't - no Mjolnir - and if Thor dies Mjolnir does not call the lightening. Ragnarok clearly established Mjolnir was just a conduit for his own power. The lightning is his own. If the source of the power is gone where is the "power of Thor"? I looked at Cap as Thor's surrogate in his weakened state.

Yeah that scene had me feeling so bad for Thor. Very powerful. They really added nuance to the God of Thunder we've never scene.

However, I have to confess - after hearing some of the Russos' and Feige's comments recently I'm starting to get a little worried they plan on leaving Thor in this state - even in GotG v3.

If that's the case - if he just gives in to this and doesn't even work his way back to who he really is and has been for hundreds of years - if this is the way he's going to be going forward, then they've really done Thor and his fans dirty. If so - I'm done. I'm am so not on board for more than one film of Fat Thor.

The only thing that gives me hope is Anthony Russo's comments:

“He may have made some repair in this movie and made progress, but that experience that brought him to that physical condition is still with him, and it’s a longer road beyond that. We don’t know what that road beyond that is for him.”

Time for Donald Blake to make an appearance...

Watched it for 3rd time yesterday...

I can say now that Fat Thor is not bothering me much like the first time but I want to say that I am still not a fan either after 3th viewing....and like Krypton Inc. has been saying so well, it is not that the fact Thor is becoming drunken Fat slob that becomes the problem ...(actually I enjoy some of the aspect of him here, mostly the looks he had in the final battle),but I just can not stand that his current condition is playing for laughs most of the time.

Especially to the one scene that i already pointed ...the close up shot of his belly at the end with the Valkyrie is not neccesary (we get it, we know now he is a fat, ...that is why I think it does not need to be show it over and over again to the audience that he is fat now).
Once again, if that shot is not purposely to be funny joke, I dont know what is...

I am usually a forgiving fan, I am one of few people who likes and defended The Dark World, but I must say that this time is the first time I have been bothered by one creative things that made by Marvel Studios.

But this was only 1 small nitpick I have in 3 hours movie of what I can say as "The Greatest Comic Book Movie" ever, so I only can make peace and deal with it now...
i just hope in the next movie, Thor will be great again.

Exactly!

Redemption is the key notion here!

There is a teaser trailer where they do a countdown of Thor's journey throughout his respective films. This was the endgame. This is, no matter how things are set up for possible sequels, the end of the Avengers as we knew them. Each and every character deserved a proper ending of this era, each! Yet, Thor had a conversation with his mother that mirrored his talk with Odin; that was the part of the movie where I was willed to hope that not just Thor, but also the movie will redeem itself. Yet, Thor got his ass beat. The discrepancy between Cap and Thor is simply too flagrant and mind-boggling. I accepted that being worthy gave Cap the power of Thor, yet, he is still but a mere human. To give Cap the scene Thor should have had is a crime I cannot forgive.

But it's not the ending.
Unlike Cap we will see Thor again

I really love the fact that
Thor looks like a full-blown Viking at the final battle. Although it's kind of a bummer that we still didn't get to see him fight wearing his helmet.

With the exception of Thor's BRIEF reaction towards hearing Hulk saying Thanos's name along with his reunion with Frigga, everything else regarding Thor's downward spiral was played for laughs.

I get what they were "trying" to go for. The problem is that Thor's change in appearance and alcoholism came off more as jokes and less tragic.

Not to mention that Thor does not really make any giant leaps in the film like everyone else.

With all of the success that the Russos had in adapting other characters onto their films, it seems like EG's Thor, Hulk, and Sharon Carter are really the only characters that they weren't able to utilize properly.

My interpretation of the Russo’s words is that Thor’s journey of redemption was jump started by Frigga’s pep talk.

But Thor isn’t just miraculously be in his prime in the beginning of GOTG3 which makes sense. Otherwise it would cheapen what he had to go through in AEG.

Thor’s journey of self repare will take its time. He hit the biggest low in his long spanning life, the healing process will take its time and I’m sure he will have a great redemption in the end.
