Thor in the new Marvel Universe

"Dignity"?

You do realise mythological Thor was quite possibly one of THE most dense and dumb creatures to ever walk the earth, right?

Loki´s pastime was basically to make a fool outta him.
I know, in fact there not much anyone can tell me about Norse mythology I dont already know. Mythological Thor was a boisterous, drinking, brawling giant killing barbarian. The comic character was first written as a chilvaric warrior who defended the weak(midgard) and his home(Asgard) He also used mjolnir for more than hitting people ove the head with it. I really like the depth of King Thor and Rune Thor. We had a lot of years(mostly avengers stuff) of a stories written about a brawler with a hammer and thats about as deep as his character went for a long time.
Lets see if I can explain this so everyone will understand what Im saying. I dont want him portrayed as a bar room brawler with a hammer. I would like to see him portrayed as a warrior with combat exp and wisdom enough to use mjolnir to its fullest potential. Thats what I mean by "dignity". Let a warrior be a warrior, not a brawler. I never said mythological Thor and comic Thor were the same and I never said I wanted them to be the same. I only made casual references that I had read the Norse legends for longer than I read the comics. In fact doing most of my college lit papers on Norse mythology helped my grades.

Well I could see him working for Cap. I mean if Cap went up to Thor and was all like "Thor I need you to help me take down some of our former friends and allies. I know it seems wrong but you're just gonna have to trust me" I think for sure Thor'd agree. Cap is like his hetero-soulmate.

Also Herc is his best friend so when Thor comes back I completely see him lining right up at Thor's side. So that's TWO major heavy hitters that Cap's side would get.

interestingly enough, Herc is ALREADY on Cap's side in this conflict..

Put me in that boat as well, I don´t really like 616 Thor but Ultimate Thor is my absolute FAVORITE character in the entire line!! (double exclamation point)
Yeah, it seems most people who don't like 616 Thor are bonkers for Ultimate Thor. Which is exactly why I'd drop any and everything Thor-related and curse Marvel's name 'til the day I die if 616 Thor were changed to resemble Ultimate Thor in character. They're very different creatures that appeal to very different crowds. I personally can't stand Ultimate Thor.

Anyway what I wanted to say is that I prefer the Ultimate Thor to the old 616 Thor who was just an Oaf with a powerful hammer. Now if we are talking about King Thor and Rune Thor then I would say those are more interesting and if it is those characters that they are bringing back them I am fine with that.
Let me guess, you were acquainted with 616 Thor primarily from the Avengers comics, right? He was anything but an oaf with a hammer when he was being written correctly in his own comics.

Thor in his last few series was fantastic...I hope they bring him back correctly and that for me would mean he would be at the power level he was when he went to rest.

Actually I used to read Thor (not Avengers, could never really get into that comic), and as I have said until recently he has almost always been an oaf with a hammer. Until he became King Thor he was a very boring character without a lot of depth (in fact I always though that Loki had more of a character depth than Thor). I did like King Thor because for me that is when after many years of appearing in comic books he finally started to grow as a character. And when he finally became Rune Thor, it was the final realisation of what he can and was meant to become. As much as I loved King Thor and Rune Thor, I also disliked old earth Thor because he always came off as an oaf.

As for Ultimate Thor, what is wrong with him? I find his character quite fun to read about especially since he comes off as someone who is smart, well educated and understands the way the world actually works. Personally I cant wait till he finally gets back his hammer and kicks Loki's ass in the Ultimates.

Yeah, I've made the same complaint numerous times myself. The Thor of his own comics and the Thor of the Avengers have practically become different characters.

Dude your avy has me in stitches!!! LOL!

It seems people tend to like every Ultimate character over their 616 counterpart because they dont have to deal with the history, their loss man.

I see the government trying to cut a deal with Thor like they are trying to with Strange

I loved King Thor. Unlike most power-ups, Thor's inheritance of the Odinpower was a means to an end--the end being a really, really great set of stories.

was that written by mike oeming, powers artist? i know/think he wrote the book at the end, non?

He would but then again I thought Tony would too

it just seems as if sentry is good friends with tony and so would side with him and so thor would be needed, stroy-wise, on caps side. plus thor is a noble man/god. tony is an alcoholic/workaholic little underhand ****

Don´t make such broad generalisations about people you don´t know.

I´ve been reading Marvel comics since I was around 12, which makes 23 years reading about Thor, Cap, iron Man, Black Panther, X-men, etc etc.

And in all this time I never liked 616 Thor in the least even though I know his story inside out.

His ultimate version, however, strung a chord because I found him to be more charismatic, relatable and even more human despite his divine ascendant.
He even reminds me of Christ with his claim to be a God in a world that doesn´t buy it.
His loyal entourage is a nice little add-on and his concerns over government and human affairs is something 616 Thor never explored so well.

He may not be as powerful as 616 Thor but if I bought comics to read about outlandish superpowers and zero character interest, I´d read Superman comics.

<- raises flamming shields :p

Did I hurt your feelings? I asked this question in another thread and that was the response I got, so no, im not making generalizations.

Yes, you are.
You´ve put me in the basket of people who like ultimate versions because they don´t want the baggage 616 versions carry even though I´ve stated that I´ve been reading Marvel for 23 years now.
I know that baggage inside out.

That IS making a broad generalisation since there must be plenty like me who have read MArvel comics their whole lives and that didn´t stop them from liking and even favoring the Ultimate line.

Look up generalization in the dictionary, im sorry I hurt your feelings.

Thor is going to return in issue 3 of Civil War. And he takes Tony's side.

And a new Thor series is going to debut shortly with a certain Ultimate FF artist on board.

You'll get your evidence next month. Along with Iron Fist being Daredevil.
