It's either you take the chance of calling them black - and if they get upset, you can reason by saying that you didn't want to offend them by assuming they're African/African-American/Jamaican/West Indian/Haitian/Bajan/etc

Or you call them African-American and risk being labelled a 'racist' or a discriminator.

I'd do the former.

Yom HaShoah is a day of remembrance (for the Holocaust)... and when did Jews get a reputation for running around calling people honkeys? They're most frequently white themselves.

I'd do the former.

I usually don't identify someone that way, and if i do it's usually a last resort or by skin-tone not generalization. At least where I'm from brownskin, lightskin and darkskin are deemed acceptable, ie...

"Check out that brownskin honey over there!"

hmm... that e-mail is, how shall we say, not to my liking too much. It reminds me a lot of that thing somebody told (might've been a friend or a professor): "Sure there's Black History month for us, but the remaining 11 months of the year is White History month"... I mean, sure there's AZN network and BET and Univision and so forth, and there's no WET. But stop and think. Sometimes, you have to wonder if the other 50 channels aren't all variations on a WET-theme.
If i get around to it i'll elaborate, but there are many posters around here on the Hype who could carry this one just as easily as i could. Bottomline Zeptron, the guy who gave you the e-mail might want to take a closer look at things.

Yeah, i stick to the color (if I have to reference it), as opposed to trying to peg culture (jamaican/dominican/etc.)
