Thread of the Tomb Raider

The marketing team made something special for National Dog Day:

I am worried about the switch in developer, but this looks pretty darn good imo. Plus Eidos Montreal are on Crystal Dynamics level at the very least. Arguably a better studio.

Well, looks like I'm getting this on PC. Better start saving if I'm gonna upgrade to RTX anytime soon.

Looks like it’s going to be great on pc with so many added effects.

Just got the notification that my copy has shipped, expected to arrive tomorrow (I love preordering from Best Buy), though probably won't be able to start playing it until the weekend (plus, I promised my sister she could have the first crack at it since I tend to play the Assassin's Creed games before she does)

Cool, enjoy mate!

Despite my misgivings, I pre-ordered this on Steam due to my love of the first two reboot games. Due to the pre-order I have 48 hours early access. I've only played a tiny sliver so far but the games seems very similar in gameplay and style to the last two Crystal Dynamics games so far, which is very good (but possibly nothing new or progressive). However, the graphics are a massive downgrade so far. I am running the game on max settings, just as I did with Tomb Raider 2013 and Rise, and whereas those games both stressed my system to the limits at the time of release, Shadow is less taxing than Rise on the same hardware and its not the result of better optimization. The textures, lighting, particle effects, and material physics are a huge downgrade from Rise. I dare say I don't know which games looks better: Tomb Raider 2013 or Shadow. 2013, especially the Definite Edition, is definitely more moody looking. I hope this isn't foreshadowing with respect to gameplay, level design, and story as well... My gut feeling so far is that this game is like Arkham Origins to the Rocksteady Arkham Games, visually inferior to prior entries and lacking the same gameplay polish, but otherwise solid. A solid entry, but not a revelation like previous ones and not innovative in any ways. If the game delivers a strong story like Origins, I can look past the faults.

I have to call BS. It's well reported that this game is a visual upgrade over the previous two games. Plenty of gameplay is online and reviews have already come out. So its not remotely a "huge downgrade." Might want to check your graphics settings or upgrade your PC.

Interesting.. just watched the Digital Foundry take on this.. and hard to see it looking worse when It still uses Crystal Dynamics engine with improvements that actually make some things look better. Guess I will see when I play tonight.

I would be very annoyed if it was a downgrade at all. Hopefully it was just a pc settings issue as suggested.

I have to call BS. It's well reported that this game is a visual upgrade over the previous two games. Plenty of gameplay is online and reviews have already come out. So its not remotely a "huge downgrade." Might want to check your graphics settings or upgrade your PC.

Everything maxed out on an i7 7700k and GTX 1080, so no it's not my settings or system. I am running the game in 1440p at 60 fps plus. It's probably a visual upgrade on consoles since console versions are always visually nerfed, but I just don't see the uogradw on PC. Maybe it is an art style thing, but it's got more of a plastically look in typical Eidos Montreal fashion than the past Crystal Dynamics games.

Some of the reviews out are for the PC version. And we know it's got new graphical enhancements (ray tracing for example) that wont even be fully tapped until Nvidia releases its 20 model cards. It was also designed from the ground up for 4k and hdr. To say it's a graphical downgrade or even equivalent to the 2013 game is just factually wrong.

If you're seeing subpar graphics worse than the last two games something is off on your end. Or you're misremembering what the graphics of the previous 2 games looked like.

Do you have the new nvidia GPU software patch,?

Yes, upon going back and booting up Rise again, it's largely a misremembering on my part, so I will take ownership for that. Also, the opening crypt and urban level are not great examples of the game's graphical prowess. It looks way better once you get into the wilderness of Peru and natural lighting takes over. However, I stand by comments in that I still think Crystal Dynamics and Rise do some things better. I think there are some bad textures in Shadow and characters tend to look better in Rise's cinematics in particular. It may be art style and level design in that Crystal Dynamics does a better job of choosing light placement and so on to maximize the "cinematic" nature of cut scenes. In the open world, Shadow does look like an improvement. Unfortunately, the new Nvidia patch has broken Rise, so I'm having a hard time running it at the moment to pull screenshot examples.

Is the new game being held up as a benchmark to test graphics cards like the previous ones were?

My copy came yesterday, haven't had a chance to start it yet due to Spidey.

I pre-ordered this too late like a dummy. Having to wait for it to be delivered sometime next week.

Sister started playing on Saturday, got to the Kuwaq Yaku village. I started my playthrough on Sunday and reached the same point. I'm really liking it so far. Hit a few interesting bugs on my playthrough

Like, for instance...
(spoilers just in case)
When there's the cut scene that starts just before Lara faces off against the Jaguar Queen, when Jonah goes to throw/slide the flare gun to her... I had multiple Jonah's pop up. There was the Jonah doing the action as he was supposed to, but there was another Jonah standing behind him further down the tunnel. It was weird... and kind of funny

On Sunday, as my sister picked up after I hit my stopping point and she started doing some stuff around the village (she didn't really further anything storywise, just collecting the various collectables (documents, relics, etc...) as well as backtracking to some previous areas to get some stuff that she missed out on (like getting the challenge in the Mexico ruins done), her lighting settings went wonky. The settings were fine when she was playing on Saturday, but when she played on Sunday, daytime locations seemed blown out and the tombs and what not way dark (with her flashlight blowing out the area that the flashlight was covering). Even going back into her graphics settings in the options and trying to tweak them hasn't gotten them back to where they were. We're wondering if it has to do with switching tvs on Saturday. Due to a football game (and not wanting to force my mom into seclusion in a bedroom to watch said football game), we took the XBox upstairs and plugged it into my parents tv (which, unlike our downstairs tv, does support the 4K/HDR settings). We're wondering if that may have caused some 'glitch' within her game profile that is causing problems now that we're hooked back up to the downstairs tv (settings on my game have been fine).

Anywho... just a bit of weirdness that we're working through in that regard. Story wise, we're liking it.

Soooooo, is anyone playing this? I hear it's a bit more Tomb Raider-ish this time around.

I am and am quite enjoying it. The gameplay is very similar to Rise of the Tomb Raider and there isn't a lot new. There is not a lot of new gameplay mechanics. However, there is a greater focus on exploration and puzzles than combat. I find there is a lot less combat in the game, which is nice. There is definitely more "tomb raiding".

So i finished the game for the first time, now onto New game plus.
I really really like the game overall.

You have a nice enough story with good characters, the gameplay although feeling very outdated after being the third time pretty much the same...is nice, the game looks stunning and plays very well.

Probably the most annoying thing about the game is the marketing.
They sold a deeply emotional story that lets you question lara and her motives, blends right and wrong so much together that you dont know which is which, goes really dark and deep into laras obsession etc.
BUT NOTHING AT ALL LIKE THIS HAPPENS EVEN FOR A SECOND.

You have a rather "Normal" adventure that only in the last 15-20 minutes tries to make it personal...but nothing the marketing "promised" ever happens in the game.
She doesn become the tomb raider, there is at the end nothing she wasnt in the 2013 game.
The reboots only problem imo is really that, the fact that 2 games were rather pointless...especially as origins.
Rise and shadow dont evolve the character too much, what they did could have been told off screen or be done in 2 games at best...3 was a mistake and dragged out the origins story too much so it hurt the whole new and alternative universe they created.

Other then that i really liked it.
The puzzles felt really nice, had nice flows and were good designed.
The Combat was toned down extremely...which fits better but also sometimes feels like they toned it down too much.
It overall plays very nice and fun.

There is unlimited potential in what they have created, but they need to follow through with it.
Over the course of the 3 games you can feel that the developers wanted more but if rumors are to believed then square enix involves themself very much in the game and forces shifts in tone and story.
The movie and the comic version feel a lot stronger than the game one, which tells me there is some trouble behind the scenes that hinders the games from fully using the potential the character has.

Anyway...i really like the game and the direction it goes.
Imo its the weakest overall of the 3 reboot games but it has brought the game into a good direction.
The future looks really good for Lara Croft again.
