well you should pay attention to what re and circum mean to work out what spect means.

spect comes from specere meaning "to look" according to http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?search=inspect&searchmode=none

i assume that spec also comes from specere. so i was right apart from my spelling.

Yeah. Thats correct. I believe the root of "Spect" has to do with the "eyes" or "looking."

So you have

"Respect" which at its root means to look at again, implying there is reason to, which ivokes the modern meaning.

"Circumspect" which means to look at from all sides ("Circum") - modern meaning: "Heedful of circumstances and potential consequences."

"Suspect" - is interesting because it implies an abilty to see into the future, to be able to look ahead. Both in its verb form (I suspect that such and such...) and in its noun form (Mr. Jones is a suspect in the crime).
