I love how Depp enjoys these crazy roles. It shows that he doesn't take himself too seriously. He never does a bad job with any of them either.

This trailer just once again reinforces why I hate J Depp & why I think the guys an overated weirdo. Stop doing Burton movies!!!, try branching out some more for god sake. it's like Dicaprio & Scorsesse, just freakin rediculous. Talk about actors with no range. It's easy to play characters who are far fetched & accentric, but try actually playing ppl who are salt of the earth, with weight to them then I'll maybe give the guy a break. Public Enemies didn't impress me either so don't throw that one in my face.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAH........oh I'm sorry...I really shouldn't...HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, wow, that's just...HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Oh my, I needed that.

I have to disagree. Playing oddball characters whether far fetched or accentric isn't easy, it's actually a bit harder since it would be easier to go over the top with a lot of them. So far Depp has played every one of them differently and I think that shows his range.

When it comes to a lot of roles that are of people who are salt of the earth types, I don't know how many times I've seen actors who take those roles pretty much play themselves the majority of the time. Yes, there are subtle differences if they play the roles differently but I've always preferred character actors who take those 'other' roles.

I second that.

The trailer was meh. The animation of certain characters didn't look too good and the world seems surprisingly bland for a Tim Burton film.

Maybe the next trailer will change my mind.

third that..haha wow

So if he plays himself he has no range, and if he plays wacky characters that are nothing like his off screen persona he has no range.

Johnny Depp has no range?

I think he's actually one of the more gifted actors out there. It takes a great actor to pull off the things he has pulled off.

There are so many things wrong with these statements I don't even know where to begin. Easy to play eccentric characters? How so? You ever tried? There's a reason why there's only a few actors (and even less among leading men) that can successfully pull off eccentric characters. Depp is one of them. He doesn't just play eccentricity for the sake of. They do have depth and they do have emotion. Can you honestly say that Sweeney Todd doesn't have a million real emotions with weight to them?

But wait.. I'm sorry.. "real world" characters who are "salt of the earth"? How about his Oscar nominated performance as real life Peter Pan author J.M. Barrie in Finding Neverland.. just trying to find human connection in his life? What about real life drug dealer George Jung in Blow? In the end of it all.. just trying to be with his daughter. And how about real life Donnie Brasco, the undercover cop who with great pain has to betray his friend 'Lefty' in the end because it's his "job".

Any of these characters "real" enough for you?

Just got around to watching the teaser. It looks absolutely amazing and I'm totally pumped for this.

depp is an amazing actor with some serious range. but im bored with him in burton films. all burton films look the exact same, so to have the same face playing the same weird role in a lot of them doesnt help. i love depp, but i dont care to see him in any more burton films. though, truth be told, i dont really care to see any more burton films period.

but we know that for 20 years already :yay:

some things i like and some things i dont...
cgi isnt all that great but its wayy too early to judge...depps acting looks great...idk...not super hyped
im growing tired of burton films as well

Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter = Heath Ledger as The Joker!

Perhaps not quite as huge and minus the Oscar but its still there.

Saw the trailer and will be checking the film out when it get's released.

Maybe it's just for the trailer, but my guess is, they're doing the same thing they do with every movie Johnny Depp is in, and making it all about him.

It looks okay, but I wasn't "wowed" by it or anything.

I don't think Depp has no range. On the contrary; he's extremely talented and all.

BUT... at this point I'm kinda growing tired of him and Burton working together. I'm a big fan of both, but I feel they're actually allowing too many things to each other. They're not demanding as much from each other as would be rich and necessary.

It is not "an easy thing" to portray a wacky character, but it has become something that Depp proved to master years ago, and thus he should try different things. I loved when Depp did Edward Scissorhands; that was exatraordinary. And then him and Burton went for Ed Wood, which was a completely different role. Bravo. But this one comes up as another variation of Willy Wonka or such. At least what I've seen. Of course Sweeney Todd was very good, but this Mad Hatter doesn't look a too innovative thing from the Burton-Depp tandem.

The film looks brilliant, but I am worried that the marketing campaign will be all about Depp. His performance as the Mad Hatter will probably be one of the best things in the film, but considering the amount of wonderful characters in the story and the amount of great actors playing them or voicing them, I would like to see the whole of Wonderland get marketed, not just the Hatter.
