Tim Burton's Dark Shadows

Green looks delicious a blonde. And I'm cool with Depp's look. I like that they made him look as close to Frid as possible. But the lack of anything but a few pictures troubles me. The last time I remember WB doing something like this with such a high profile project was... Superman Returns. :(

They had a teaser trailer out for Superman Returns in late November 2005.

A good 7 months before the release. Not to mentions poster, images and those web videos.

It's nothing like Superman Returns.

You're correct, they did have a teaser out 7 months before the release, and then NOTHING but a few pictures until about 2 or 3 months before the premiere when they released the full trailer.

So yeah, it's nothing like Superman Returns. It's worse.

If it comes off like Beetlejuice, which was a comedy, I'm fine with that. Honestly, most of Depp's films have comedic undertones (even if they're dark or tragic comedies): Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Batman Returns, Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow, Big Fish, etc. Only Sweeney Todd really buried the comedy, but it was still there, especially in the middle of the movie.

It's not as dire as some of you are making it out to be. You're all just antsy to see footage from it. "Sweeney Todd" didn't have a trailer until two months before release and that turned out to be a modest success. That's the only situation I can compare it to. This is a similar film to "Sweeney Todd" (dark, gothic Burton) and this will probably make the same amount of money. At best, we're looking at a modest success. This thing won't shatter box office records or anything. I can see why WB might have a similar approach to the marketing. Only difference is that this one probably won't be rated R.

To be fair... Sweeney Todd was released on 21 December 2007, so they felt they could get away with very little marketing. No doubt hoping Name would sell it alone.

Dark Shadows is opening in a much more competitive quarter and needs the extra push in order for its voice to be heard. The Avengers will destroy it as it is.

Burton, Depp and vampires is no doubt what pushed this movie forward... so don't say they couldn't have at least mustered an official poster to keep the public aware.

Curious, for people who were big fans of this series, what is this weird, campy tone that I keep hearing about? I've only seen the movie (House of Dark Shadows) with Frid, as well as the Ben Cross remake TV series in the early 1990s. I really enjoyed both of those, but I always found them to be pretty much your standard vampire fare. What was so weird about the original series?

I think it was just it's cheap budget and off-kilter tone...

The music also added a weird quality to it.

Ah, I see what you mean.

They need to get Bill Hader to play the Quentin dude. :hehe:

The marketing is going to go nuts in March. Depp's Barnabas is going to be on the cover of Famous Monsters, the universe is unfolding as it should.

The guy who saw the trailer gave more detailed descriptions on imdb.
I just did a movie survey and I got the unreleased trailer for this movie. I didn't like it at all, it comes off as a comedy. I'm very upset.

BTW, this is coming from a huge Burton and Depp fan.
You get to see everyone especially Chloe who reminds me of Lydia from Bettlejuice without the goth look. Eva looks sexy in her green corset but she also has jokes. You see Jonny Lee Miller a couple of times and I thought it was a Woody Harrelson lookalike. Jackie Earle Haley looks exactly what I expected and he should make us laugh but his character is suppose to. The trailer shows a lot of cast members.
And I know he's a fan but he doesn't remind me of the TV Barnabas at all, he's more like George Hamilton from Love at First Bite. I really wish I was lying and that I was making this up but unfortunately I'm not. To prove I'm not lying you will hear the song "People are Strange" when you see the trailer.
There is another joke where Barnabas is at the dinner table with Collins family and mentions that he wants to restart the family business(you then see a clip of a assemble line factory) and he ask the family to get the horses. Elizabeth (Pheiffer)replies, Horses? We don't have horses we have Chevy's. This was one of several jokes referring to him being in 1972.
I saw this in the trailer and he asks her, "What did I ever see in you" and she rips off her shirt to reveal a sexy green corset and her big boobs and he replies "Oh, now I remember."
He does have fangs and he is strong, actually you see him really strong at one point of the trailer where he shouldn't have any strength at all. I can see a debate coming.

BTW, a corset can work wonders on many women but I just googled some Eva pics and she has a healthy rack.

Also, the little boy thinks he's cool.

It was actually a pretty finished cut. More stuff I remembered is a crane hitting the coffin and a construction worker yelling "we found something", you then see something of an explosion or magic powers coming from the casket(I just realized that coffin and casket are the same thing, hahaha), a construction worker being dragged into the casket, Barnabas wandering around the town in awe of department store windows, Willie telling Barnabas that it's 1972 and Barnabas saying 1972 in a weird, shocking, and funny way. He meet the Collins family and tells them he's a distant relative, Lydia [Carolyn] makes a teenager wisecrack, in one scene Angelique greets him with a passionate kiss, you see Helena Carter but I couldn't make out what she said.

These sound very believable to me. Doors music and an assembly line montage.

But I refuse to believe that this will be a straight comedy. There are far too many tragic events in Barnabas' life. There will have to be moments with much more sadness than something like Beetlejuice had.

A guy from Fangoria who has interviewed Burton and Zanuck about the movie said it's definitely a horror movie.

Some are adamant it's comedy, some horror. Kind of sounds like Sleepy Hollow in that way.

Well... that can only be a good thing.

What's going on with this film anyway? It's coming out in less than 3 months, and we still don't have a teaser trailer. I haven't heard about any production problems, so I'm just wondering.

Not really surprising there wasn't a Trailer for Sweeney Todd until 2 Months before it was out.

Only WB knows... frankly the hesitation with the film is a complete mystery.

Hmm... I know it's a Burton film with Depp in it and all, but still, it's coming out one week after Avengers, and it's going against that new Sacha Baron Cohen film, if I'm not mistaken (though I don't think that one is going to be a big problem, box office-wise). Saying that, they really need to start with the marketing. Usually all summer movies have big promotion, etc... Just seems odd that we still haven't seen a teaser trailer.

WB is doing a low-key approach to this film until the last 2 months before it comes out where they'll start heavily with the marketing, it's similar to Burton's recent films from WB like Sweeney Todd and like Soderbergh's Contagion (that one got a trailer in July and came out in September, but my point still stands), I guess since most of us are really excited for this that we're hoping that they'll switch up and release a trailer earlier, but at least we'll know it's going to come out next month, if I'm not mistaken.

All though this character won't be in the film (though if there is a sequel, I bet he'll be the star of it), this montage to his lullaby sums up the atmosphere of the show best:

Creepy, melodic, almost like a gothic fairy tale...and a little bit campy. Just right.

Burton's only terrible movie has been Planet of the Apes remake.
