Yeah, but at least this is in a much more grounded way. She's just a redhead who wears much too much eye-shadow. As opposed to being the love child of Lady Gaga and Depp's Willy Wonka.

Empire has two pics, Grahame-Smith talks a bit about why it's set in 1972 and a producer mentioned that the movie won't be in 3D.

Said screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith, "Tim and Johnny took a long time explaining exactly why it had to be 1972. 1969 was too early and 1973 was too late. 1972 is right at the time when the hippie movement and all its peace and love is dying out and being replaced by this me-me-me generation in the '70s who are all about showing their wealth and having everything."

There's also good news for those who didn't love Alice In Wonderland's 3D - this will be firmly 2D. Says producer Richard Zanuck, "We discussed this quite a bit. We didn't want to be categorised as another 3D extravaganza, because this isn't. We have action sequences, but mostly it's interaction between characters, and that's where the humour and the story come from."

They can be hit-or-miss. Sure AIW was a dud, but several years before that, Burton and Depp delivered their second master, IMO, with Sweeney Todd.

I quite like Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It's quite faithful to the book, but I most of all love how Burton expanded Wonka's backstory (sweets banned, face mask device) and extended the ending. It was quite interesting and gave a different angle to the character. Wilder was superb, though. His outburst at the end made it for me, when the real man burst out underneath the polite zaniness. CATCF has got all the Burton trademarks there. A bad childhood, fantastic main titles, flashbacks, absurdity (building the chocolate palace), the winter setting - set in a practically timeless and placeless environment, expressionism - Charlie's world is monochrome, Wonka's world is bright, etc. I'm sure there is more. It's not a masterpiece, and I prefer the original, but it's still a fun two and a bit hours. I'm happy enough to say I like both versions.

Thinking about that scene gives me shrugs, I can't believe what I was seeing. Now I don't hate Burton's Alice but neither would I defend it. I just find it hard to connect to it, it's all visuals and while some of it is stunning I don't think Burton captured the magic and the charms the books had. The story is really flat and Alice's journey wasn't captivating, didn't like the third act either.

However I did like HBC's performance as the red queen but with all the talents Burton assembled I've had hoped something better could've come out from the movie. AIW is one of my favorite books so I like the inclusion of the Jabberwocky for an example but there's nothing in it that makes me like it as much as the other adaptations, particularly the '51 animated movie from Disney and the one Švankmajer directed.
