Tim Burton's Dark Shadows

The funny thing is that making Dark Shadows a horror movie would be as unfaithful as making it a comedy. It was a campy daytime soap opera, not some brutal horror show.

the movie version was pretty brutal! the tv show was campy but still dark! this remake looks like total cheese!

Not exactly the tone I was expecting, but I quite liked the trailer.

I almost think they're intentionally trying to play up the funny, family-friendly angle so as not to scare anyone away. I have my doubts as to whether the film as a whole will be two/two and a half hours of that. It'll have humor, of course, but so do all Burton films. I just don't think it will be all humor.

No it doesn't look and isn't. According to people who have seen it at test screening it's dark and funny at the same time. Only one director can manage to achieve it. His name is Tim Burton. :cwink:

I wouldn't say he's the only director to achieve it, Ill say he's the only one I can think of who can continuously deliver though.

No, it really doesn't.

But it had a very haunting, gothic atmosphere. The camp came from they were dealing with ghosts, vampires, witches, werewolves, time travel, etc. but taking it deadly seriously in a melodramatic way.

I think if this felt like Sleepy Hollow, it'd be pretty perfect. It is based on horrific ideas, but done in a subtle quirky way that is both amusing, but also haunting. This movie looks like Mars Attacks!

I'm hoping the movie is better. Again, WB marketed Sweeney Todd as a feel-good drama and left out that it was a about a serial killing/cannibalism operation and most of all was a musical. Perhaps DS is indeed a gothic fairy tale and they're putting all the jokes in the trailer to lure in the Depp fangirls who loved him as Willy Wonka, the Madd Hatter and Jack Sparrow.

At least, that's my hope.

I was really looking forward to this but IMO the trailer is terrible. As a fan of both Burton and Dark Shadows I will see the film when it comes out on dvd but right now most of my excitement for this film is gone.

I forgot to mention, Johnny Depp and Eva Green look to have some great chemistry in this. I can't remember the last time I noticed he had such chemistry with a leading lady.

I think it was Benny & Joon, all the way back in 1993. Yikes.

Just watched the trailer and I really, really liked what I saw. It seems to be a dark comedy and everything just worked for me. I can't wait.

Eva Green also looks absolutely magnificent. A big reason why I'll probably watch this. :hrt:

What is this "other" Dark Shadows movie you guys are talking about?

House of Dark Shadows (1971) was a B-movie directed by Dan Curtis that starred most of the original cast (notably absent were Vicky, Angelique and Quentin). It was their way of cashing in on the Hammer Horror-thing in its death-throes where they did Dark Shadows as a Christopher Lee Dracula. Barnabas was a (sympathetic) Dracula, Willie was Renfield, Carolyn was Lucy, Stokes was Van Helsing, etc.

It's pretty awful, but a guilty pleasure that has that fun horror movie look from the early 1970s with lighting and shadows. I am glad Burton did not remake that and went with something closer to the show in plot. But from the trailer it looks like it has forgotten the tone and feeling. But I still think the trailer is misleading. I hope so.

I haven't seen the trailer yet, but in terms of tone and feeling, I rarely trust trailers anymore. Majority of the time, directors of the movies don't really partake in them and the studios tell the editors to use what the studio feels will be the draw of the movie.

I've seen a few episodes on Netflix. The show is cheesy and low-budget. So, to me, the movie already looks better than what I've seen of the show.

My biggest complaint with the show is its slow moving as ****. It takes like a half dozen episodes just to advance the plot the littlest bit.

The atmosphere, however, is great.

So literally as I made my post regarding not seeing the trailer, I see a link on my facebook with a decent quality video.

I think the biggest problem of the trailer is the music; it's relying to heavily on the 70's instead of a score. Other than that, looks awesome.

Fans complaining about the trailer is like if they made a Power Rangers movie as an intentional comedy and people started complaining because it lacked the drama, action, and oriental philosphy of the series. At that moment you'd turn into Chloe Mortez and ask if they were stoned. In fact, let me do that right now, "DACrowe, are you stoned?"

;)

Official version is now on iTunes Trailers.

Here is a poster:

Like I said in my first post, the visual tone of the movie is definitely different than the tv series, and if someone had a complaint with that, I could at least understand their qualms.

But what these dudes are saying about camp and comedy is ridiculous. :o

The music ruins that trailer. :o
