Everything about Trump is less than impressive so... Par for the course, no?

That is what is baffling about the Trump in politics phenomenon.

He is just SO dumb. So obvious. So unsophisticated in all ways.

He is not and was not some slick, silver tongued devil that charmed us all while operating with ruthless precision behind the scenes, strategically countering his foes with brilliant tactics at every turn.

He was and is a moron who has only the utter moral bankruptcy of GOP leadership and the cultivated for decades willful ignorance of the rank and file of the Republican Party on seemingly all levels to thank for his win as well as him NOT currently being incarcerated in a Federal prison.

You forgot the part where we have decimated the educational system for a large part of the populace. They are now are susceptible to believing things that wouldn't sell if they were an MCU movie. In other words, perhaps the biggest threat to democracy is an undereducated electorate who are fed lines of BS intended to keep them right where they are.

I have bad news to tell you about the stupid things people would believe in the past...

No need to tell me. I already know about them. But, I have a great idea......let's make education ultra expensive and burden people with debt. That will accomplish 2 things. It will tend to keep lower income people who can't afford, or don't think they can pay for, a decent education in their economic niche and, secondly, hamstring those same people who decide to take the plunge. It's a win-win.....for the wrong people.

Question... You both have interacted with me here for a long time...

What level of education do you both think I have?

Be honest.

If you speak 'stupid' and 'bigot' you can develop a cult following of people whose brains operate on that exact wavelength. This isn't just an American problem, but a human problem.

I have been following lawtwitter long enough to know that education is no indication of intelligence.

The thing with Qanon, is that I don't necessarily see it as that unique. We have had a ton of moral panics in this country. Often filled with crazy conspiracies.

Yeah and from anti-Masons and Know-Nothings and others.

[Article] The Paranoid Style in American Politics, By Richard Hofstadter | Harper's Magazine (1964)

How the 19th-Century Know Nothing Party Reshaped American Politics | History | Smithsonian Magazine
From xenophobia to conspiracy theories, the Know Nothing party launched a nativist movement whose effects are still felt today

Phillips says the Know Nothings displayed three patterns common to all other nativist movements. First is the embrace of nationalism—as seen in the writings of the OSSB. Second is religious discrimination: in this case, Protestants against Catholics rather than the more modern day squaring-off of Judeo-Christians against Muslims. Lastly, a working-class identity exerts itself in conjunction with the rhetoric of upper-class political leaders. As historian Elliott J. Gorn writes, “Appeals to ethnic hatreds allowed men whose livelihoods depended on winning elections to sidestep the more complex and politically dangerous divisions of class.”

Patience. I want Trump’s perp walk to happen soon, but I want all the ‘i’s dotted and ‘t’s crossed. I do not want Trump out on a technicality like Cosby did.
True this.

My point is that while education matters, the literal **** you learn all through school as a child and then further education as an adult, there are perhaps more factors beyond since little ole high school diploma me has never drank the Reactionary Kool Aid.

And since I'm neither some mutant born with a super human IQ or the like there is nothing special about how a person like me can see through the oh so obvious bull**** of the GOP and what they've been doing to the country and the world for forty plus years.

As I like to point out always... Ben Carson is a literal brain surgeon and he is a ****ing moron.

We need better education here, no argument on the general principal, and it would be a useful arrow in the quiver to slay the Fascist dragon in the land but this is also beyond just "low information voters" or a lack of "critical" thinking.

You're right, there have been manias in our history galore but this feels to be one of the more dangerous periods and I wish it was just due to lack of education.

But it is getting to be a choice more than lack of info or understanding complex issues. People are choosing to be Reactionary Weirdos regardless of their social standing, income, education or the like.

I wish to god education was the silver bullet.

A philosophy major who didn't finish because tragedy and you decided to become a radio DJ?

It was a tragic blimp accident... I still wake up in a cold sweat Lilly...

Anyway... It's the bottom of the hour here at Q106.5, the Valley's number one station for 90's hits! We'll be giving away tickets to see Blues Traveller and Smashmouth playing at the fairgrounds this weekend as soon as we comeback, but first... Here's Oasis with Wonderwall.

I think I remember you saying something to the effect that most of your education was because you educated yourself. When I speak about the need to strengthen our educational system, I realize that there will always be well educated people who lie for their own reasons or have a tendency to believe crazy stuff. IMO, the most important thing I learned was how to think critically.

A stronger educational system will "help". A weaker one will "hurt". As you probably remember, I used to be a statistician and there are very, very few times when I don't think in terms of "tendency". If you have a large enough group, there are no absolutes. What you can do is influence overall tendencies via education, etc.

So, is a good education important? Yes. Is it absolutely necessary? No.

A side effect of me attending UCSC was that I worked at the University of California for most of my career. I doubt I would have gotten the job I did if I hadn't attended. I was familiar with the culture, the UC mission, and the people and I think that probably helped during the interview process. Of course, if I wasn't a highly qualified candidate, I wouldn't have even gotten the interview.

Yeah, I don't want you or @Sithborg to think I don't value or understand how important good education is on either the personal or societal front.

You hit in on the head, yes. A better educated populace can only help overall on multiple fronts.

Democracy doesn't really work with an uneducated populace or without critical thinking skills.

This, this, this.....a thousand times this. My mentor, who was an old school labor activist and machinist out of the Merchant Marines, once said to me that the only defense a democracy has against authoritarians is a well educated work force and populace. Now, you don't need to have a University degree to be well educated, but the more education we can provide is a plus. The republican party knows this and it is exactly why education is under siege.
