Getting the record or not getting the record is irrelevant. It's netted over $200 million in five days. That's incredible.

Oh this movie definately could've beaten TDK's opening weekend. But think about it though. $60 million opening day on Wednesday. I'm pretty sure a Friday wouldn't change that number (by much). I say TF2 would've had a $65 million Friday had it opened on that day. Then what? Does it hold better than TDK from that point to surpass it? That's asking alot. It maybe could've had a better Saturday than TDK but as for Sunday. I mean TDK's Sunday number was amazing for a Friday that big.

It definately would've been close no doubt but personally I don't think TF2 would be able to put up as big a number on Sunday to do it. Don't let the big $201 million fool you. Putting up $60+ million on Friday and following it up with two $40+ million Sat and Sun is not easy feat. Maybe it could've. Maybe. We'll never know.

Plus I'm sure Paramount could care less. They've already made their money back in 5 days (as far as production budget goes).

And I'm sure if it had broken it WB could care less. They made back their production budget on TDK in 4 days.

I think this was the Transformers best shot at taking the opening day record. In general people seem to think the first was better so Tranformers 3 will probably do less than TF2. I could see BB3 having a bigger OW than TDK idk about domestic total though

I don't see BB3 breaking any of TDK's numbers. TDK was a perfect storm. Perfect release date with no strong competition surrounding it, Joker as the main villain and the untimely passing of Ledger which created a buzz that was off the charts for this movie.

It will be interesting to see if IM2 or The Avengers will break these numbers. What makes me hesitant in saying IM2 will is its release date. TDK and TF2 benefitted from late June and mid July release dates where people were off from school. IM2 is an early May release date so that will make it more difficult to break records. Same goes for The Avengers but that movie will be enormous, so long as the movies leading into it still go according to plan.

Iron Man 2 is not gonna put these kinda numbers up. As good as IronMan was it just doesn't have the complete mass appeal that Transformers had. The Avengers: even less. We'd like to think of the nerdgasm as being a total nationgasm but it just isn't. The Avengers would even less mass appeal than IM2 would. Among comic fans its going to be the holy grail though.

I mean we could go back and forth about this but we'll just have to wait and see. Who knows what happens from now till then. Think about this though. As popular as Transformers (the original) was in theaters it was even more popular on DVD. It's sold like 15 million copies. TDK has sold about 13 million. Iron Man has sold about 9 million

^I think it would be foolish to outright dismiss IM2 as having no shot. I'm not saying it will put up those numbers but I will not dismiss it as having no chance. Just look at what people were predicting the OW and final total was for IM before it was released and what it ended up actually doing. It blew everyone's expectations away, not too mention it was a fantastic movie that pretty much everyone liked. So IM2 can build off of that as well.

But, you're right, we will just have to wait and see. A lot can change from now until IM2 is released.

To be more accurate
Transformers has sold 15 million copies
The Dark Knight has sold 12.7 million copies
IronMan has sold 8.5 million copies

side note: Twilight has sold 8.7 million copies and is still selling like 100,000 copies a week. WTF? 100,000 after 4 months on the market? God damn. Please tell me these girls aren't going out and buying multiple copies of the "favorite movie" just to drive up the numbers

And truely sad at the same time.

I tell you this right here and right now. As much I didn't like Transformers 2 and as much as I think that at its core the Transformers franchise is a ******s wet dream, I would still rather see IT break TDK's records than... Twilight. If those DVD numbers are true though, and if it really is still selling 100,000 copies a week then I think it would be safe (and sad) to say that the next big challenge to the record books is..... *gulp*.... "New Moon".

WHHHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What source are using for these numbers? Not that I don't believe you, I would just like to check it out myself.

When the teenaged girl audience joins in force for a particular project, it cannot be rivaled. Just look at Titanic. Truly a scary thought though.

i dont think it was teenage girls that propelled Titanic. I think it was pretty much all womenkind. I know a middleaged woman who went to see the movie three times a week with a group of friends

Yes Tweenies scare the crap outta me like nothing else in this world.
BTW: I knew some teenage girls that went to see Titanic upwards of 13 to 14 times!

^Thanks for the link.

Yea, that movie's performance was amazing. It actually went up from one weekend to the next. Incredible.

SO happy this has made its budget back already, now I can look forward to TF2. I actually think TF3 will break the 3rd movie curse of comic book type movies and be the best one.

You mean Twilight right? an you menan DVD sales right?

If so then I think that week where it went up was a result of it winning all those MTV movie "awards".

I'm very pleased with this number. I like it as Dark Knight #1, Transformers #2. They're polar opposites, but I dig them both very much. I hope it keeps going strong (and I hope no one insults me for that, peeps are getting carried away with that lately)

Those DVD sales are impressive but I actually meant Titanic's run at the BO where it was actually going up from one weekend to the next.

Update:

ROCK 'EM, 'SOCK 'EM! TRANSFORMERS SEQUEL: $387M WORLDWIDE! $201.2M Domestic + $187M Overseas! But 5-Day Can't Beat 'Dark Knight'

SUNDAY AM: Here are the spectacular opening numbers from Paramount's Transformers 2: Revenge Of The Fallen... 3-day weekend total is $112M and 5-day overall is $201.2M. Thaose figures include a -15% Sunday estimate miroring the play on the first Transformers. Internationally, the robot sequel made $162M with a cume of $187M including the early debuts in Japan and the UK. So that makes for $387M worldwide, a nice haul for the 100%-owned Viacom title. (There have been some erroneous reports that Steven Spielberg has a piece of the new pic, but I'm told he has no personal financial interest in it. He received an executive producer credit and commensurate fee, but the movie falls under the original acquisition deal when Paramount acquired DreamWorks SKG.)

i hope that Spielberg will be more interested and will help Bay out. the 3rd movie could really be the best and could have some character development from some robots.

It could definitely be the best of the series if all that happens.

The only Spielberg influence I see is with Bumblebee, and the goofy nature of Sam himself, as the average kid that's not quite cool, yet not a total dork either.

Being the best one of what? The Transformers series or of any 3rd film of any comic book film franchise? Either way, it won't be much of an accomplishment. The Transformers franchise, IMO, does not fall into the "Lets hope the third one breaks the curse" because the first two aren't movies that well liked by both fans and critics. The Spider-Man franchise was and so was the X-Men franchise. You need to have a great/solid first two movies and then you can worry about if the third one will break the curse. The only franchises that can do this now are Batman and perhaps Iron Man if the second film does its part.
