Sci-Fi Tron: Ares with Jared Leto

I'm worrying about the concept if it's going to take most of the action in the real world. I don't see much point in that.

That might be one way they are keeping the budget smaller? Though the director's last film, Maleficent 2, cost $185 million.

Just realized that the suit is by Dillinger Systems. Either we're not gonna see Cillian Murphy or he's getting recast and I guess it also explains why the identity disc (if that's what it is) is not circular.

If I’m being honest, I feel like Tron has never really worked. The original was kind of revolutionary in its time but like most early attempts at CGI graphics, it feels extremely cheesy when you revisit it. I rewatched it around the time Legacy came out and I honestly found it damn near unwatchable. Legacy had some cool visuals but those were undercut by some really BAD visuals (mostly the young Jeff Bridges stuff) and some questionable writing choices. I would have been interested in a sequel but it never came and that’s fine. And now they’re going to try and relaunch the franchise with Leto of all people? Yeah, good luck with that.

I also hate the concept. At this point, a movie about mankind's first interaction with AI isn't new. We have had AI movies and such essentially since the birth of Science Fiction, and doing Tron in reverse isn't revolutionary either. Beastmaster II, Masters of the Universe, and fantastic characters going to suburban New Jersey and crap has been done to death. I wish we had gotten a concept that was actually creative and new. Not the same exact plot we have seen in countless movies, and yeah sure basically every plot by now has been done to death. But with these IPs we keep bringing back, I am getting bored by the sameness of them all.

Good catch !
Maybe Dillinger Sys managed to create a grid of their own.

Could be but it also could be something they planted in the Grid that's run by Encom so someone like Ares can escape.

I have a feeling he’ll be played by Evan Peters for some reason.

Yeah that's probably a safe bet, just put some glasses on him and he's kinda looks the part.

Also it looks like they're shooting it in Vancouver again where they shot a lot of the exteriors like Encom in the last movie.

True, that's probably what they thought. But then again why make it a Tron movie if it's something completely different? It's not like it's a huge brand name. And watch this go overbudget because of the strikes and because, well... it's Disney.

Also yeah, I'm still mildly interested in the project but the director's history is the biggest red flag for me. Honestly, Leto is like the least of my concerns here.

It's the director's history for me too plus the screenwriters aren't giving me much confidence. The only positive I have is they got Jeff Cronenweth who is David Fincher's old cinematographer who shot Fight Club and The Social Network.

I didn't know that, that's at least good. I don't really expect it to be as good looking as Legacy but maybe it can still look appealing.

Also, I'm very curious who'll be hired to do the score this time. Daft Punk's is still one of my all time favourites.

I don't know. In Tron 1, Encom was cluless about the grid, Flynn discovered it through the laser digitalisation experience and then exported it in his own private server in Tron 2.
Encom in Tron 2 still don't know about the grid.
Dillinger son founds Dillinger System post Tron 2 and figure out the whole Flynn and grid thing.

It might be Geoff Zanelli, who composed the director's last two blockbusters (Pirates & Maleficent).

I'm pretty excited for this.

I remember walking into TRON Legacy not knowing a thing about that world. I just thought it looked like a fun movie. But everything from the entire Cyberpunk aesthetic to the music and cinematography was incredible. I even ended up buying the movie AND the video game.

I had always hoped we'd get another one, plus I see that this one has Gillian Anderson and Greta Lee in it. As far the score, I hope they get Joseph Trapanese. He worked on Legacy with Daft Punk and did the music for the Lightcycle / Run attraction at WDW.

Also, the identity disc being an irregular hexagon is certainly a... Well, choice. I'd love to see Disney replicate those at their parks like they did the Legacy discs.

Leto being the stand in for AI in human form is perfect.

AI sucks, is annoying, and shouldn’t exist.

The first "Tron" is a classic, and while it took some time for me to warm up to "Legacy", its one of my faves now. My main disappointment about "Ares" is that no one from "Legacy" is returning.
