Sci-Fi Tron: Ares with Jared Leto

TRON 3: Disney Producer Still Hopeful For Sequel
Now, in an interview with ScreenRant, producer and former Disney development executive Brigham Taylor has signaled that those hopes remain alive at the studio as well.
Bob Chipman said:
As part of an upcoming interview mainly focused on his work as producer of Jon Favreau’s live-action Jungle Book movie, Taylor mentioned Tron among multiple examples of Disney properties that have been revived as modern blockbusters despite not being major hits in their day. When pressed as to whether this meant there was still life in the cult-favorite sci-fi franchise, he had this to say:
“I’m always hope for that. I just had a wonderful visit to Shanghai, where they have an amazing attraction based on Tron Legacy. The designers just did such an amazing job creating the feeling of stepping onto The Grid, and that indelible visual world that Lisberger created and Kosinski explored… and I think there’s a real stickiness to that that I hope can grow into a film or whatever else. So I don’t know what I’d “hint” at other than that I hope for that, and that there’s obviously been conversations.”

Oh god please make it so. Disney seems to be so stuck up Marvel and Star Wars' stock that they forget about their classics. This better happen but they are killing any momentum they had with Tron Legacy. The same thing will happen as it did when the sequel came out. Too long after the original.

I'm so happy that the original Tron is on Netflix. I watched it the other night and it's crazy how many throwbacks Legacy had to it. A lot more than I initially got.

I really feel Tron is a property that has a lot more potential if you get the right people on it. The cartoon was an attempt but it was almost too dark I guess.

It's not going to happen. The time has passed. Disney live action will do stuff like Pete's Dragon, The Jungle Book and Beauty and the Beast and leave the action adventure stuff to Lucasfilm and Marvel.

Yeah, I don't think it will ever happen. And it's kinda their own fault. Tron Legacy had so much potential, but they needed to work on that script. And while a lot of the effects were stunning, young CGI Jeff Bridges looked like his face was made of rubber.

Do they even have room on the schedule for more of those types of blockbusters with all the Marvel and Lucasfilm movies coming out?

It's a damn shame if they never explore a 3rd movie, I still watch and like Legacy a lot, sure it's flawed but the pluses outweigh the bad and I feel there is a lot of untapped potential in this world.

I was so late catching Legacy and I loved it (for me, it's a film I regret not seeing in theaters)...and would love sequels...but I agree with Vile...Disney's too busy with Marvel, Star Wars, and live action remakes of their animated library...

I agree. I'm a HUGE Tron fan, and I literally screamed "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!" when the news broke last year that Tron Ascension was canned all because of that stupid Tomorrowland movie that had NOTHING to do with TA's production flopped! I really wanna see this story wrapped up!

That seemed like one of the issues when this sequel finally fell apart.

Exactly

saw the thread bumped and..dam…almost got excited.

Disney could bring it back as an Netflix exclusive.

Netflix's big exclusivity deal for Disney's latest movies starts in September
Netflix will become the 'exclusive pay TV home' for Disney's recent hits

Ditto with this. I really really enjoyed Legacy despite it's flaws. I would so love a sequel, there's so many things that they could do.

*sigh* I guess for the time being I will have to continue to satisfy myself with legacy and kane's gifs

Those GIFS are awesome, and yeah there is so much they could do with that world. Was looking forward to the return of [BLACKOUT]Tron[/BLACKOUT] as well.

Now dont get mad that I bumped this...

It looks like the rollercoaster ride in Shanghai Disneyland is up and running

From the recent Tron Legacy showing in LA...

First of all he confirmed the movie was indeed titled TRON: Ascension, and it was to be set 2/3rds in the real world. He didn't mention anything about Ed Dillinger Jr. being the antagonist, but did say it would be about a real world invasion from the Grid. He said that TRON 3 is not dead, just cryogenically frozen. He said that Legacy spawned from the Comic Con teaser, so you never know what could happen with events like this screening.

He also shed some light on the light colors and what different shades mean. In terms of orange, the lighter the color, the higher the rank. CLU has gold, Rinzler orange, and the black guard and sentries are all more reddish.

He also let us into something I'm not sure has ever been said to the general public. Sam was originally supposed to have a friend called Sobel who helped him break into ENCOM and then took off once the cops came. He ended up being digitally removed from the final movie, which Joe said he felt bad about for the actor.

Speaking of Joe feeling bad, he said that looking back, it was a mistake to use the face rig to record Jeff's face while he was doing his scenes, because the more complex method would have produced more realistic results in the facial animation for CLU.

When getting Daft Punk for the film, he had a meeting with them at the 101 Cafe in Venice, CA. He had pancakes with Daft Punk. DP apparently also wanted to do a silent score originally, to which they were talked out of, thankfully...

Here's my writeup on what he said regarding Tron 3 tonight (I was there):

He tried to make it clear that it's not dead as in gone for good or vetoed, it's just not been picked up. The script was 80% there, though still with another 8 months or so of tweaking probably. He believes the reason is this: Now that Disney is busy with Star Wars and Marvel, when the choice comes down to making another Star Wars or making a Tron sequel, they're going to pick Star Wars. Even if Tron 3 were to perform really well, it probably wouldnt pull Star Wars numbers. Theyre just more concerned with putting their resources into other properties right now.

As for details about the movie: To be called 'Tron Ascension." It was to be an invasion movie, but instead of the threat coming from outside (like aliens from space), they'd be coming from within (computers). First act in the real world, second act on the grid, third back in the real world. As for returning characters, Sam and Quora of course. He also said it wouldn't be Tron without Tron and Kevin Flynn so you can assume they would return. Ed Dillinger Jr, who only had brief moments in Legacy, was to be a major player in the movie as well. He mentioned Encom and Dillinger Corp so I assume Jr started a rival company after he was booted from Encom by the returning Sam.

I think most of that was probably already known, but there it is. One interesting thing to note was that in the time Collider has been doing these types of contests, demand for tickets was never higher than for this screening and that includes an early showing of Civil War. For the first time they used both screens at IMAX headquarters for the contest rather than just one. There were two producers sitting in the audience, I hope that perks their ears up.

He did say that Dillinger Jr. would be vital in the follow up. It'd be like Encom v Dillinger, something amongst those lines.

Such a shame we never got the threequel, I really liked Legacy and still watch it every now and again. Just can't see Disney ever picks by this up again though.

Collider Exclusive:
Joseph Kosinski Reveals the Plot for ‘TRON 3’; Says It’s an “Invasion Movie”

JOSEPH KOSINSKI: I guess I can say that TRON 3 is in cryogenic freeze. So, it’s there. It’s not dead. It’s alive, but it’s sitting there, waiting for the right time to move forward. I mean, you have to remember that when we made TRON: Legacy, Disney did not own Marvel. Disney did not own Lucasfilm…they own everything now. But this was before they owned everything, so from the studio point of view, they have a certain number of slots and a certain amount of money to make movies and if you can make a Star Wars spinoff or another Marvel movie, which are all doing incredibly well, a TRON movie, even though I think it would do very well, the question is: Would it do as well as one of those? That is more the reason we haven’t seen another TRON is that Disney stock is flushed with really successful properties right now. But that doesn’t mean we won’t see one at one point.
KOSINSKI: It definitely doesn’t have to be on a movie screen. I don’t know if you saw the TRON ride, which opened in Shanghai and was amazing…I think the TRON franchise is alive in rides and I think there’s still interest in exploring other things like VR, but as far as the TV show, I don’t know, I think that would be tough. As you saw on screen, so much of the world has to be created digitally. You can’t just go and film a TRON movie, or at least the TRON side of it, so I don’t know. I would never say never. There’s possibly a version of that, but that’s up to Disney.
KOSINSKI: The movie was called, “TRON: Ascension”, I think that’s out there. I think we got the script to about 80%. We were in good shape. We were probably eight or nine months out, which is still a good amount of distance from being ready to shoot it, but I think the script was in good shape. What I’m excited about is the concept, which is an invasion movie from inside the machine coming out as opposed to one we’ve usually seen. So we hinted at that at the end of Legacy with Quorra coming out, but the idea for Ascension was a movie that was, the first act was in the real world, the second act was in the world of TRON, or multiple worlds of TRON, and the third act was totally in the real world. And I think that really opens up, blows open the concept of TRON in a way that would be thrilling to see on screen. But there’s also a really interesting character study in Quorra and a “Stranger in a Strange Land,” trying to figure out where she belongs having lived in the real world for a few years, and where does she fit in.
KOSINSKI: I don’t see them having superpowers. I don’t see them being able to shoot lasers from their eyes or do what I would consider to be a superhero-type movie. But in her DNA itself, her being the first digital-human hybrid, there’s something in her being that allows objects from inside the Grid to exist in the real world and makes them permanent, so that was the idea. So I think the idea is strong, it’s just a matter of the right time and the right place and the stars aligning as they have to do for movies.

I don't see it happening either but if it does I will be happy, I just don't have any hope.
Between Marvel, Star Wars, their animation movies and now live adaptations, I don't see any room for Tron.
