Sci-Fi Tron: Ares with Jared Leto

Jeff Bridges wants Tron 3 to be a virtual reality movie

http://ew.com/movies/2017/08/08/jeff-bridges-tron-3-virtual-reality/

The upcoming firefighter movie Only the Brave finds the great Jeff Bridges reteaming with his Tron: Legacy director, Joseph Kosinski. So, when your writer chatted with the actor Tuesday morning for the EW radio show Entertainment Weirdly at Sirius XM’s New York studios, I had to ask about the ongoing rumors that we might one day see a third Tron film.

“Yeah, yeah, I’ve heard those rumors too,” Bridges replied. “I hope that happens. I think Joe’s got the script and everything, you know. Yeah, I don’t know that I’m supposed to talk about it or not. I don’t know. It should be the first virtual reality movie, you know? Wouldn’t that be cool…to see Tron in that world?”

Now i'm confused... is this a sequel or a reboot?

Earlier this year it was reported that Jared Leto was among the names circling the third Tron movie, a project that’s been hot and cold at different times following the somewhat lukewarm reception of 2010’s Tron: Legacy (51% at Rotten Tomatoes; $400 million in worldwide grosses). While we still don’t have a firm release date or cast, Leto — out promoting Blade Runner 2049 — says he’s definitely excited about jumping into the Tron universe and expanding upon it, much like he’s done with Blade Runner.

“For me, when I was a kid, it was Blade Runner, it was Tron, it was The Shining,” Leto told Rotten Tomatoes. “It was these kind of elevated genre movies really blew my mind, as well as films like Clockwork Orange and Scorsese [movies] and the early work of Brian De Palma. But Tron is another one that I feel like is a world that we’re not done with yet. There’s so much more to explore and to see there. I would absolutely love to expand upon the world of Tron and see what we could do to bring that to life.”

So What Would That Third Tron Movie Look Like?

According to Legacy director Joseph Kosinski, the current idea revolves around an all-out invasion film, with parts of it taking place in the real world and other parts inside the Tron world.

“What I’m excited about is the concept, which is an invasion movie from inside the machine coming out as opposed to one we’ve usually seen,” Kosinski told Collider earlier this year. “So we hinted at that at the end of Legacy with Quorra coming out, but the idea for Ascension was a movie that was, the first act was in the real world, the second act was in the world of Tron, or multiple worlds of Tron, and the third act was totally in the real world.”

As for Leto’s role (assuming he remains onboard and the film becomes a reality), all we know is he’d be playing a character named Ares, according to the original report. In Greek mythology, Ares is the god of war, and so it would seem like Leto might be playing a villain — or, like he does in Blade Runner 2049, a character whose presence is both good and bad, depending on the situation.

Sounds like a loose sequel but different enough to be a reboot. They wanna make sure they capture those brats that don't know what the **** Tron is.

Confusing, hey need to pick one or the other between sequel or reboot. Preferably the former.

If there is no Olivia Wilde, there is no point.

Idk, just pull the rug over audiences by making Ready Player One connected to Tron.

CS: I got to see you work years ago on the set of “Tron: Legacy,” which was a trip for me as a fan of that franchise. It was the scene where you shot Steven Lisberger’s cameo…

Kosinski: Oh! At the End of Line club.

CS: Yeah! I know Ascension got put on the backburner, do you still have any active involvement in the iteration that has Jared Leto attached?

Kosinski: Jared and I had actually been talking about “Tron” since “Tron: Legacy” back in 2009. We almost put him in that movie, actually in that scene! So Jared’s a huge fan and we actually batted around ideas and I was talking to him about that role in “Ascension,” but we only got to the script stage on that. We never really moved beyond that and that’s sort of where it sits for now.

I set up the petition years ago, we have almost 500 votes! We just need to hit 1000 to show Disney Tron 3 warrants a sequel asap.

While on the press circuit for Netflix’s Mudbound, Garrett Hedlund spoke to That Hashtag Show’s Daniel Jerome who asked about his level of involvement with Tron 3. Recently Jared Leto revisited his interest in appearing in the franchise and moving the new film forward. Hedlund didn’t confirm his return or that he’s been involved in any of the recent discussions, but he did imply that he would be open to returning for the 3rd film.

Daniel: Well, speaking about fandoms and things that you’re in. Just heard that Tron is getting another one coming out and are you excited about [you know] reprising your role as Sam Flynn?

Garret: [you know] I’m a little, I know there’s been announcements or some [you know] people talking about certain things on it. I don’t know what the direction is. I’m sure it’s [you know] pretty far off. We almost had it greenlit a couple years ago and they had the ascension script that they were going to go with and, I think just with things going on with the financial stage of the industry at that time really just prevented it at the moment, and we’ll see what the future holds.

With Star Wars, Marvel, the live-action adaptations of animated classics, and now the new acquisitions from Fox, I doubt Disney is going to ever make time for Tron 3.

I was just at Disneys Hollywood studios and watched their "movie magic" lights/projection/fireworks show. The show featured segments themed after big movie franchises like pirates, dr strange, guardians, and then there was a whole bit about Tron. It was nice to see that Disney is still trying to keep it in he public consciousness at least a little bit.

Plus they've got that Tron rollercoaster coming in the next few years.

People gave Hendlund a lot of crap for Legacy but I thought he did a good job in the film. Olivia Wilde stole the show but I felt he was good in a “Neo” kind of role. Really, that movie’s problems weren’t any of the actors; the story needed some work and the CGI Jeff Bridges just looked weird. I would be all for a sequel (hopefully with Cillian Murphy as the villain, as was the original plan) but yeah... I doubt it happens now. Tron was Disney’s attempt at launching a franchise that would attract a primarily male audience. Since that time, Marvel has really blown up, Star Wars has dominated and now they have X-Men and F4. They don’t need Tron.

Which is why they should cast Hedlund as Johnny Blaze and make a Midnight Sons movie!

Why Tron 3 Never Happened, According To Garrett Hedlund

When the next Tron was supposed to start -- we were greenli[ghted] and ready to go -- and then I think the studio had troubles with how Tomorrowland did and stuff like that. And I think they asked them to give them like a hundred reasons why they should do this film. And if that didn't fall through, I never would've been able to work with Soderbergh on [Mosaic].

Kane you and I are gonna throw hands one day how you bump this thread

Whatever. Just bring back Daft Punk and I'd be more than happy to spend money on the sequel

Stop playing with my heart Kane.

I know Tron Legacy had its issues, but am I alone in thinking it had once of the greatest movie trailers of all time? Everything about this... the score, the visuals... I remember first seeing this and my interest in the movie shot through the roof.
